  • Second hand RE 350cc - Bore Slapping?!

    Hi all,

I have recently 'promoted' myself from a RX100 to a RE350cc and its been WOW! THe bike is a '92 standard 350cc. I got it off a garage and it was running smoothly then. Now being overly enthusiastic i wanted to push the bike to see how much rudeness it could take. So i did a impromptu trip from Chennai to Pondicherry the same week without any service. The ride was brilliant and the bike stopped only twice.

One was sudden and without any indication. I stopped the bike and after a couple of kicks (which i mastered after quite a few painful kickbacks) the bike started. The second time was when the choke cap just flew off. Fortunately it got wedged beteen some wires and i had to screw it back on.

Other than these two probs i didn't have any other major hiccups. Yeah the headlight front part kept falling off cause the vibration kept unscrewing the top screw. On the return trip i felt the tyre wobbling quiet a bit so i dint push the bike too much. Remember i never did any sort of tightening after reaching pondicherry which is a good 4 hours trip from chennai.

There are a few basic questions i need to clarify.
    1. Why is there a neutral between each gear? my mech said if you are cruising on a highway you can just drop it in one of the neutrals and let inertia do the rest.

    2. When i am i 4th gear and need to stop should i lower the gears all the way to the neutral just below the 1st gear?

    3. How much does a good rear tyre cost? The wobbling i felt was cuz the rear tyre is worn out and is so smooth at the center that there is no grip at all.

    4. There is an extra sound i hear from the engine. A metallic sound everytime i rev the bike or even during riding. My mech says its something called bore slapping and i need to get the engine serviced. Is he right and should i go in for a total overhauling which another RE expert estimated to be around Rs. 8000!

I am currently using the bike regularly and other than the 'bore-slapping' and bad rear tyre i don have any other problems. Somebody recommended JAF in chennai but the guy does a total overhauling by default.

I plan to spend around 3k each month to bring the bike to perfection. I want to spend around 15k to 'restore' the bike so if you RE experts can suggest changes either necessary or cosmetic i would appreciate it a lot. And also is army green a good color for RE. I seem to like it better than black and want it painted too.

The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

This is not a feature. It is an old gearbox design, and these false neutrals are a short-coming of it. As usual, we bullet owners like making excuses for its weaknesses.

              2. When i am i 4th gear and need to stop should i lower the gears all the way to the neutral just below the 1st gear?
As opposed to what? Going straight to neutral? Depends on the situation really. If there is no traffic on the road, and no turns for the last 100+ meters, you can just coast to a stand still in neutral.

Otherwise, dropping gears (releasing the clutch in between each shift) is always a wise choice for control\engine braking\keeping your sequential gearbox happy. And if you are in a really good mood, you can even blip the throttle before you release the clutch each down shift.
              3. How much does a good rear tyre cost? The wobbling i felt was cuz the rear tyre is worn out and is so smooth at the center that there is no grip at all.

Anywhere from ~1k for the stock rear tires from MRF to 4+k for Duros.

              Unsure.

I would recommend you just take it to him once. Let him diagnose the problem. I.e. do not go to him and say "i have bore slapping". Explain the symptoms, let him take a test ride. My experience with him has always been good.

The Bull was not completely finished, They were waiting for tank to be returned from the painter. I tried to follow for a week continuously on my way to office .. but the Bull was still there as it is.

                i inquired about Painting charges , he said anywhere between 9 - 11k ,
it was 1952 or 1962 he told ( dont rem ) .. actualy purchased at 65k ..the total restoration went around 45k.

it was really outstanding.... i would have really loved seeing it completed (with tank) and some photo shoot.

                  Hey GreaseMonk!

Thanks for the info. Was really helpful. Regarding the bore slapping i will be taking it to a mech in the coming week. Lets see what he says.

Another novice question. Last night me and my buddies were returning home after a wedding and we decided to race. Surprisingly the apache RTR160 and the pulsar 180 just flew by whereas my bullet which is 350 cc was quiet behind. Isnt larger cc supposed to give better power or am i driving wrong?

The color looks amazing but i guess i cant spend that load of cash on the paint so i think ill stick to army green or the good old black.

See bullet has longer stroke than the pulsar or the apache. It revs up slowly. Pulsars and Apaches are high revving machines unlike the Bull. The bull is in a class of its own. It is meant for nice and comfortable cruises but not for drags.

I will recommend thread starter to show up it in a good bullet expert to check the condition of Engine By Opening it.A expert mechanic can easily see the problems.just moving the piston horizontally for play(worn out bore) slightly will give the answer.you may go for rebore with oversize piston.Cylinder kit replacement is drastic.
I hope your bullet is fine.

point noted...but can you tell me how fast a bull can actually go?

                              RedDragon,

I recommend replacing the cylinder kit than reboring. Most reboring in India, is done shoddily which just results in poor performance after the job. Just buy the cylinder kit man.- doesn't cost too much for the 350.

                              Cheers,

                              JAy
