Hi all,
I am new on this website. I have my dad's 1984 RX 100 with a Jap engine, I have been riding it quite a few times these days. However, its fuel tank has a few dents. So is it advisable to replace the tank?? how much will the fuel tank cost me?? The same is the case with the exhaust pipe, is it advisable to replace it with a new one??
Cheers.

Hi abhishek_floyd welcome to XBHP. Lucky you having your Dad's RX. Yes you can change the Tank on the RX i am guessing it should be under 3 k for a new tank. Also I am sure a new Original exhaust pipe is still available in the market. Which city are you from??Originally posted by abhishek_floyd View PostHi all,

Hi....
Thanks Yamahatrooper and jd666.
Well I am from Ahmedabad..... Does anyone of you know a good and reliable bike mechanics in this city?? Earlier used to give my bike to the castrol bike zone, but their service was not upto the mark.
Also a mechanic once told me that replacing the exhaust pipe of the RX100 would deprive it of its sweet unique sound.... is it true??
Cheers!

Here he goes on the Road Again.
Yesterday and today have been very special and exiciting days in my life I began the restoration on ReX and have managed to get him road worthy and relatively reliable. After days of thinking of approaching the task, allocating funds and collecting some critical original parts in pristine condition. These parts came thanks to our own ArvindRaju who was kind to source me these parts for a really good deal.
So as per my plans the Stage 1 is complete and this is a list of all that has been done:
Parts sourced from Arvind:
Pair of rear shocks
Chain Case
Set of indicator assemblies
Pair of RVMs
Handle Bar grips.
And the next task was to find a mechanic who was capable, relatively trustworthy and affordable with labour costs. Well got this guy called Imran in 9th block JNR who I had come across when i was hunting for a two stroke screamer called Imran. He works as a local mechanic shop attached to a spare parts shop. Now! Imran is quite a charecter and erratic and getting a hold of him and managing him be a bit difficult but can be a overcome with keen supervision and nice talking. He proved have to the skills, knowledge and the passion for the job. And when i took the bike there he had this t shirt that said "Ducati Mecanicca" in bold and I was wearing a t shirt saying "Ducati Racing"
and we were about to beign work on a YAMAHA
but some how it seemed like a right connection. Anyways having decided on going on working with this guy. I got the bike over to the garage and this is a list of stuff that got done:
All electricals are back in order replaced/Installed:
Wiring harness - Minda
Rectfier - Minda
Battery - Exide 6V (Decided to keep in 6Volt)
Tell Tale Bulbs
Headlamp assembly - The stock RX headlamp small dome.
Switches
Spark Plug
New cycle parts replaced/Installed:
New rear wheel and drum
The rear half of the rear fender (RX owners will know i gues it's that half plastic under the seat)
Front Fork springs
All cables - Throtle, Front Brake and Clutch.
It was a complex build and yesterday we completed the assembly and I took the bike from the garage after a whopping bill of Rs 7,495
for all parts mentioned above + Labour which i thought was well worth it for the fact that ReXy is back on the road now but has left me well broke and will have to scrounge thru the rest of the month.. but thats ok!
So after the assembly i took out the bike and on the way to the petrol pump I raised the throtle a bit hard to overtake a frustrating rickshaw driver and the Lo beam blew..Heck i thought meself yet unfazed bit the bullet and switched to Hi beam and carried on and then another blip of the throtle the Hi beam blew as well
blooddy Osram night breakers they were argh. By now I was felt quite disapointed and broken got to the petrol pump filled some gas and got out of there and half way back to the mechanic the bike just sputtered and died. I was like really broken now. Got back Imran's and he started troubleshooting why the bike was shutting off which was isolated to a blocked fuel cock with was throughlly cleaned and fitted back. Sputter problem solved
now Imran replaced the rectifier and the bulb but ReXy was blowing headlamp bulbs like bikes blip up RPM needles when reved. He he he, kinda like blip the throtle hit 2.5K RPM pfff goes the head lamp switch to hi beam blip throtle pff blows the high beam. Change bulb repeat process blow the bulb
fun but expensive. We blew some 5 bulbs this way and almost started enjoi it being the lil nutcases Imran n Me are. Thankfully the spare parts shop owner's son is me mum's student and these bulbs came free. By now Imran said he'd sort it the next day. And on my way back the fork jammed in and there was no action.
. By now I was a very angry, frustrated and sad man on the verge of Breaking down.
I somehow took heart and figured that this project was never going to easy or cheap and I have to stay positive and press on so got from work yesterday morning and kicked ReXy and headed back to Imran and on the way there the sweet RX engine note was comming thru in the crisp morning air which lifted my spirts a little and when I reached the garage Imran came running out enthusiastic but with a concerned look and seeing the fork he said thats nothing and cos there was the modded extension it s getting stuck and on whack with a mallet the tubes popped and the action is fine. Imran says in a couple of days this will be sorted and I can see it has improved now it does Jam after a hard pot hole but a slight jerk of the wheel pops it out and it's fine and it s taking harder bumps to pack it in. And the bulb blowing situation Imran did not try his handiwork on it and rather told me he'd get it fxed by an elctrician took the bike over the electrician worked his magick and now the bulb stays stable even if I redline the Engine
.
So we have it folks the bike is good enough to ride to work now, zips past anything else on the road with a slight flick of the throtle and if take to the his Power Band of 4.5k RPM (aprox) he just takes off with a sheer banshee wail like a Jet Plane. And now has the stopping power to stay in control with all that power and pickup. It is special feeling to be astride him when he just takes off like that. wow. Thats why i guess RXes are that special.
Now there is Stage 2 and Stage 3 of the project left.
Stage 2 - Paint job ( After i replenish my coffers)
Stage - Engine ( But by the way the bike is doing at this moment i dont have to touch the engine i feel.Touch Wood.)
It's hard to believe that bike is 22 years old proud of him.
I know pictures tell a thousand words and they re comming soon hopefully on Sunday or Monday. Thanks to all the 2 stoke fans and my biker bros her who reading this and hope it made interesting reading.
Peace Love Unity Respect
Oh! P.S: ReXy is getting an xbhp sticker applied first after i get home from work today

New tank costs Rs.3500 here in Bengaluru & the exhaust pipe costs Rs.1200. I suggest not to replace the exhaust pipe. Whats RX without its musicOriginally posted by abhishek_floyd View PostHi....

Even I have the same problem. My dad's 86' model RX has a dent on the exhaust pipe. Decided to leave it as it is.
@YamahaTrooper
Nice to know you have kept 6V
. Everybody is in a hurry to go for a 12V. Keeping the stock dome is also a good decision. Somehow never liked the bigger ones.
One small suggestion though. Take it to a proper workshop for repairs. Roadside mechanics are at best 'jugaad'.
Do let us know about your plans on the paint work as and when you start it.
Happy & safe riding

Just a quick update:
I have taken some high res pics of me RX and ended up having a lil agruement with the owner of the camerea so me pics are stuck there but will negotiate a peace deal soon with my friend and get my pcs soon.
And the bike is leaking oil like she is having periods cant figure out where the leak is from cos i see oil stains on the bottom of the engine and wipe it clean so I can come back and isolate to that part but the part i cleaned will have no traces of a oil leak but under the bike i see a huge patch of leaked oil. Really heart rending hope some one can throw some light on this and point me in the right direction with this.
Also the front fork has packed in spite of all the work it still bottoms out and gets stuck in it's shortest position. So I am thinking I will go in for a new fron end altogether with a fornt disk setup from the Gladiator with the Wheel taken of the 1st gen Pulsar and I am not a very big fan of alloys and the onle spoked wheel that I can think of that supports a disk that readily available of the shelf would be a 1st gen Pulsar front wheel. Well. I wnated to get you guys' s opinion about how feasible this mod is and it would be great if you guys could help me figure out the cost for this Job.
I know this is not ideally a stock/Original setup but I am ok as a part of my idea of this project is to make this a very practical powerful reliable bike and the priority is not total originality."I set out running but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine.
