    Kuch zyada hi HATT gaya

Purani CBZ kharidne ke bahut reasons ho sakte hain :

    1. CBZ classics are the best from HH stable after ZMA.
    2. A decent deal...
    3. Why should one buy a new pulsar/apache/uni when kaam-chalau bike chahiye as a new bike was anyways on cards and you preferred saving up for that :P

          Diffuser,

Terrific choice man. I am looking forward to "even" longer trips from you now. And if you follow Nandan's run-in procedure religiously, your bullet should thump along without niggles for a long, long time. But, remember, not to baby it and also not to upshift too early and lug the engine.

          Cheers,

          Jay

Yes the Bullet is practical indeed. I intended to learn changing the speedo cable yesterday but got more involved in talking to the mech about some upgrades for the bike (TB backrest for instance). But it didn't look complicated from what I saw. Do go for a classic 350 soon...coz I am in so much love with the bike I might get one in a few years and give it a retro look.

Today while starting up the bike in the morning a very funny thing happened. I pumped the kick a few times with the engine kill switch on before going for the startup kick. With the choke on, I kicked and got a loud bang like a Diwali cracker (small one) from the muffler. The second kick started the bike but I still don't know why the misfiring was there.
Be wary of the backfire. Too many of these can frag your sprag. And HIDs are anyday better than the NB.

            Cheers,

            Jay

Thanks Jay. It was with the help from our friendly xBhp members, including you, that I made the decision. I have been a fan of the Thumpers forum for long and hang around on other sites as well to oogle at the iron monsters.

I will remember the advice about upshifting early and backfires. The engine has freed up after the first service and I am now making the bike taste the speed of 70 in short bursts.

                First service report

Yeah, this is coming in quite late since I completed 500 km within a week of buying. I noted that the showroom as well as service personnel were a bit reluctant at providing additional service demanded by the customers. A colleague of mine turned up with his six months old Electra and told me that they had put a scratched headlight dome after an accident and haven't replaced it for four months. Also pending was his crashbar fitting.

Anyhow, I had been promised a complimentay saree-guard, plus had plans for a TB-type backrest. The saree-guard, they said, was not available in the market and they were planning to get it from the manufacturer. I felt it was purely Bull-S. I also asked them to touchup a few places where paint had come off, and that too was postponed. So, in all, I waited for just getting my oils changed and bike washed. I got an extra horn fitted, a twin of the one that was factory-fitted, for 350 bucks. The sound was good enough, and not too loud, since I don't want to be a nuisance on roads. The mech told me headlight beam and holder will be changed in next service to fit a H4 bulb. Bike's mileage has come up to 30 +/- 1.

man o man...how could i miss this......engrossed in work or not having internet at home...whatever might be the reason....I went with Sunil to Cuttack when he had called me that he is buying his machine today...as usual i am always excited about these activities. I reached Cuttack and to my utter frustration the folks told to go to the mail depot where the bike should be coming...Went there and the manager told that it cant be done today due to billing isuses blah blah......

Ultimately my beloved friend got his machine from BBSR...and look at him he has already completed his first service....

congrats bhai...once more and keep thumping......

btw why woodland shoes sucks while changing gears?i was planning to buy one this time....

I am getting a little convinced that the RE showroom folks are rotten people. Last time I had my speedo cable changed, they charged me 200 bucks. Now last week, I broke the cable again and bought it from an RE showroom in another district (more of that in Tourer). I was surprised to see the same cable selling for 80 bucks. I asked the dealer if it fits the Electra and he said yes. Next, I tell him about the last cable and he slams the BBSR showroom guys for more than one reason. For one, they do not service bikes purchased from other showrooms, even though it's against company rules.

Next time onwards, its Caveat emptor for me when dealing with them.

EDIT: They fell back on their promise for a complimentary saree guard as well. I got frustrated and got it from a shop across the street. The owner gave lame excuses like they were waiting for the supplier of a superior brand etc etc. God help me!

                      1 month and 2200 km

One month and 2200 km ago, I got my Electra 5S. Now, I think I ought to put a small report here for future owners.

The bike has performed wonderfully and never given me the slightest trouble since I got used to it. The morning kickstart routine has been followed religiously and ES is used only in traffic situations/office entry gate. The bike has taken in a decent amount of road and off-road experience. A couple of smaller 100-200 km trips and a little bigger at 400 km-2 day one have been undertaken in the last month. You should be seeing a triplog shortly.

Running-in is a little difficult, as the bike tempts me to be taken at 80 kmph. The engine has assumed smoothness and yet there is a little mechanical clatter. The mech says the 9k km service will take it away with tappets and rocker arm adjustments. The bike has been driven with care till 500 km and under 50kmph, whence I took it to 60 and 70 a couple of times. After that, the speed was limited to 60 kmph, with short, timed bursts of 70. No more. Post second, service at 3k km, the figures would be 70 and 80 respectively. On leaks front, I haven't noticed anything much. There are a few smudges near the gasket linings, but that is not much to worry about. Engine oil level is checked time to time by me. The gear shift is much smoother than what it used to by in the first week and I have learnt to handle false neutrals without a red face in traffic.

I had spent the last Saturday trying to upgrade the bike's headlamp by replacing the sealbeam, holder and bulb, but in vain. The sealbeam did not fit the outer ring for Electra, hence I would try the Standard's one next week. I purchased a TB backrest for the bike, waiting to get it fitted this weekend. The store was in another city, Cuttack, though not too far away for a small ride. It had a good collection of spare parts, yet I was not able to find a good crash guard. Will have to get it from some Delhi guys.

I hope to get another 800 km on the odo before the Christmas weekend and get the bike serviced, after which a small trip is on the cards. Till then, the sedate riding will carry on. Also planning on joining Nandan's classes on Bullets when I get to Bangalore in Dec/Jan for three months.

Just go with what Nandan says. Below 50 for first 1000km with short bursts of 60, then below 60 with short bursts at 70 till 3000km. Can't say I followed it as rigourously as adviced.

Upgraded my bike's headlamp to H4 halogen, 55/60W. In case of an Electra, four things need to be changed:
                                1. The sealbeam - Got AutoPal multifocal sealbeam for Amby. Comes for 140/-
                                2. The metallic outer ring - The Bullet Std model's, made by Minda. Got one plus four clips for 120/-
                                3. H4 hloder - Ceramic type would be good, mine came for 75/-
                                4. Bulb, of course - Anything you like. I used a cheap trial bulb from Osram, 70/-
All these were put together by the showroom head mech. I could have done myself, but didn't want to risk wiring fault. The first attempt left me with a weak low beam and a brilliant high beam. Plus, hi-beam indicator was mildly lit even in low beam. Got it corrected yesterday during second service, with the ceramic holder replcaed by a plastic one. Ceramic was too big and prodded into the wire setup behind the sealbeam. Not both beams are fine, but the hi-lo switch's function is reversed. Will have to make another visit soon.
