  • Landsliding around Lansdowne !!

Most of the days are spent pondering over questions like :
"Why is the sql not returning correct data?", "Staffing profile not able to send resource requests!!??".....
Sometimes, it feels good to ask oneself "Will I be able to cross that slush patch without getting stuck?", "How long before the rains hit hard while I am on the hills?"...

This small trip was just that... rains, slush and refreshing nature.

    Riders:
    Tanay - Pulsar 180
    DevilisH - RTR 160

    Destination: Lansdowne and Pauri

After a number of calls, IM's and a meet, the destination was set as Lansdowne. Initially, me, Tanay and Prateek were to ride on, but a day before the ride, Prateek had to drop off because of office stuff (he will be duly rewarded )

The ride started on a overcast Sunday morning.Tanay reached my place and we started off around 6:30 am. The ride on the plains was simple and smooth and with a cool breeze, quite enjoyable ! Riding quite leisurely and taking a few breaks, we reached Dugadda.... and then the fun began !!

The road upto Lansdowne is simply wonderful and beauty all around is mesmerizing !! And to top it all, the whole place was covered with clouds !!
The moment I started that climb, the clouds, mist brought about a calmness I had not felt for a long time While going up, we saw a waterfall from amongst the clouds.... and met it while going up !

By the time we reached Tip-n-Top, it had started raining. We just barged into the GMVN hotel and checked in !! And almost immediately ordered for lunch! After filling in our tummies, we decided to look around a bit....

After this, the rain pelted us and we ran inside.... the camera also died!! and seeing that.... me too!! Tanay assured me that it was just a case of condensation and to leave it overnight. So, that was it for photography !!
Evening, we went to the market (still raining...), got ourselves "punchos", and came back.

Next morning weather had cleared a bit, and the cam switched on.... so clicked for sometime...

    got some close ups...

While coming down, stopped a few times to capture these views...

We came down to Dugadda and filled up our bikes, and then decided to go back up to Pauri !! Though there were some time constraints, we went up.... and what a decision this would turn out to be !!

While the roads till Lansdowne were butter smooth, after venturing a few kms towards Pauri, we had close encounters with roads of a third kind!.....basically no roads.

and places where we could go, we were happy if we found just mud, not slush upto a feet in depth!!

For most of the part till Pauri, we were in slush or gravel.... and RTR, true to its nature, sliding happily. I learned a good thing here: I don't interfere with the sliding, sliding doesn't interfere with my riding !!

Good thing that came out of this part was, now if I see mud and slush and stuff, I know I can ride on

We didn't stay for more than 10 mins at Pauri. After Lansdowne, the place seemed overcrowded. So, it was back to lots of off-roading... nah, it was in-mudding !! and then back to the plains.

In all, this was a trip which we enjoyed a lot and for me it was more of a ride to clam myself and re-start in a new way...

Many thanks to Tanay for patiently stopping for my photography breaks and for sticking with me in the Pauri run !! And a wonderful rider !!

He will be putting up his part of the log soon... and also his bonding with landslides

@Devilish: You bloody traveled to Lansdowne and didn't even bother giving me a call!? Anyhow, I loved the short and crisp log and the photographs too. I always had a soft corner for Lansdowne; simply LOVE that place - the sights, the sounds (or the lack of it), the lovely weather and ofcourse the beautiful tarmac; everything is so inviting.

But, I am shocked to see the conditions of the roads towards Pauri! It used to be wonderful. The monsoon is having a bad effect on the roads I see, but glad to know that the roads from Dugadda to Lansdowne are just the way it was the last time I went there.

Looking at these photographs, I feel like traveling there one fine weekend, who knows I just might! And do post more photographs (which I am sure you have loads of)! Thanks for sharing this wonderful log of an even wonderful place - Lansdowne.

So here is my part of the log:

I had managed to get permission to stay overnight at a "friend's place" and that was to be the perfect window for a trip. Me being a moderate tourer at best, we decided on Lansdowne.

The journey to Lansdowne was great, the sky was overcast but there was no rainfall. We reached the place around lunchtime and checked into the GMVN hotel next to "Tip-in-Top", a viewpoint.

While roaming around in Lansdowne it started raining and we were soaked through.

The next day (Sunday) we started for Pauri. To tank up we had to return 20 Kms to Kotdwara. I began having some doubts on our timeframe allowing for a ~160 KM round trip in the hills to Pauri but we went ahead with it.

The hill riding, for the most part, was fun. The roads were dry and our progress was fast. All that changed on the road to Pauri. The "road" was a never-ending series of landslides all competing to outdo each other in terms of difficulty in crossing. Mud mixed with rainfall or streams formed stretches of slush longer than I'd ever seen before. My bike was making like the new TVS RTR 180 ad (where the rear skids while the front turns). After about 4 hours of what seemed like eternity we arrived at Pauri only to find a small, overcrowded and overly-commercialized hill town.

          What a disappointment.

In fact we were so put off that we started our return journey after exactly 5 minutes at that place. Another 4-5 hours of torture later we were back at Kotdwara at around 5:30 in the evening.

While on the Lansdowne-Pauri road (i.e NH 119) we were forced to wait 3 times as a landslide had blocked the way and clearing was in progress.

The return journey was a nightmare. NH 119 does not have any streetlights and is badly potholed. With a lot of difficulty we managed to get back at 12 AM without incident. Here are some observations:

          1) The bus drivers on this route will drive everywhere EXCEPT their own lane, even if it is empty.

          2) Always do this route in the daytime unless you like masochism or have exceptional headlights

          3) The Lansdowne-Pauri road needs to be avoided in the monsoons

          4) Bike odo reads 790 KM total. Fuel consumption = 16 ltrs. So my bike gave me around 50 kmpl. Not in Aryan's range but it is better than the 43-44 I usually get.

          5) The slushy experience makes me realize that those who go up to Leh and thereabouts have to be real iron butts.

There are also incidents that happen. We were returning from Pauri on National Slushway - 119 when we came across a drunk group of 6-7 involved in a fight with 2 others. After beating up the other two they turned their attention on us. One told us in a slurred voice to go back, and we did, all half kilometer of it. After waiting for 5 minutes to let the chaps move off we resumed our journey.

Conclusion: Lansdowne is a nice place and I'd go there again but a drier season will be easier on the rider.

I was thoroughly prepared for this trip but things didn't fall in places. Even the day I called Bishal that its not possible for me, I was disheartened....
The road conditions reminds me of a part of Chamoli trip, remember Bishal.

Coming to the pics part, "AWESOME", specially the macros. I know what you are capable of, just get a DSLR with macro lenses and I guarantee we would see another photographer in making.

@Tanay: I hope you were wearing AlpineStar jacket and gloves with "that" helmet for the trip ..... kidding.....

I just hope the next trip comes soon

                  @Aryan Da: Any plans.........??

Hey Bishal, was awaiting your trip log since I saw the lovely pics on orkut. Bhai u really went one step ahead of me, even though both of us acquired the passion of touring after leaving back college. Kudos to you brother!
