  • [Photo Feature]: Weekend Run To Dandeli And JOG Falls

One more solo dash of approx 1400 Kms.

    Route taken -
    Day 1 - Pune - Belgaum - Dandeli - Yellapur - Sirsi
    Day 2 - Sirsi - JOG Falls - Sirsi - Banavasi - Hangal - Hubli - Pune

    DAY 1

Late night Friday party was about to spoil this plan. But at the end i made it

Started bit late on the Saturday morning at 8:30.Till Belgaum i had to take the NH4 and then to reach Dandeli take the first exit.
Plain, straight and smooth NH4 with very less traffic.Didn't encoutered much rains till Belgaum.

Few Kms before Belgaum saw the first exit, followed the exit route to reach Belgaum.Few kms of the road was in bad condition.
After little bit of enquiring in Belgaum, reached on the Dandeli route.Traffic was very less and the road was pretty good too.

I had to take plenty of stops to enquire about the route as all the route signs-messages were in Kannada

Few Kms before Dandeli when i stoppped to confirm the route, that fella told me the wrong route and i went inside that route for 10-15 Kms.

    Lost somewhere

And a Forest Ranger stoppped me.He started enquiring about me.After 20-30 mins of Interviewing he allowed me to go and also told me the correct route.

Reached Dandeli around 5.I was planning to stay in Dandeli in a Nature Resort-Jungle Camp. There is a government resort named as Kulgi Nature Camp which is few Kms ahead of Dandeli.Jungle Safari tickets are obtained from here only.Timings for jungle safari were 6-8 in the morning and 4-6 in the evening.I was quite late for this and also they don't allow bikes inside the Park

I was thinking to do a night halt and pay a visit in the morning slot. But locals adviced me that,at this time of the year most of the roads inside the park are closed so you will not be able to explore the park completely. So why waste the money.

    Rice fields

So i started towards JOG Falls.Plan was to reach as near as i can.Crossed Yellapur.Between Yellapur to Sirsi there is famous spot Sahsra Linga ( Just 13 kms from sirsi).I reached there in the night,so skipped the place. Also in this time linga's are not visible because of the water level in the river.
Reached Sirsi around 7:30.Checked-in in a hotel for 170 bucks, had traditonal food in a nearby restaurant and went for sleep.

    DAY 2

Started for JOG at 7 Am in the morning. It was another 60 Kms from Sirsi.Got some relief on the route enquiring part as there were english sign boards on the route.

Reached Jog falls at 8:30.Paid an entry fee of 5 rs.Dumped my gears at the nearby shop and went to enjoy the falls.

Ok here is the river..which is so still

    View from the top

There is a way to reach at the base of the fall. But currently some work is going on,so tourists are not allowed. So at present you can only enjoy the view from the top.

But i got lucky,i saw few persons crossing the blockage's and going down.I simply followed them and managed to saw-enjoy-capture the beauty of the falls from an different and the best angle.

I just sat on the rocks and stared at those mighty falls for hours.I have never seen such beauty in my entire life.

After spending some time, i headed back to the top.Coming down part was bit easy, but climbing one.Damn i had a very tough time climbing those stairs. While climbing the stairs i felt that the 1600 figure is wrong. It is definately 2000 +.

    The Hardest part

Finally managed to reach at the top and find security guard waiting for the tresspassers. But he just asked 'aur kitana he neechey' and let me go.
Went back to the cloack room, collected my stuff and started for Sirsi.

    A school just before sirsi

Reached Sirsi and went to the famous Marikamba temple.

When i was coming out from the temple few locals started asking the common questions 'Aap kaun ho,Kya karte ho,Ye Pulsar he kya'.They also told me that a near by place Banavasi (arnd 21Kms) is also a tourist place.Which has some Old Temples. So in this way i landed on Banavasi

The name of the temple is Madukeshwara temple. The temple is of Lord Shiva build in 9th Century.

After visiting the temple i started my return journey.Aim was to reach Hubli.

On my way to Hubli,i also visited a place named Hangal. There is a Temple named Tarakeshwara where ASI is doing some excavation work. The workers tolds me that Pandava's came here and took shelter.

For reaching Hubli from Banavasi.Either you have to go back to Sirsi and take the Highway or you have to take the internal route and reach Hubli.I preffered exploring internal route.

This route ended 25 Kms before Hubli at the NH4,it met the Main Sirsi - Hubli highway just before the four lane route.

Reached Hubli at 3 pm. Stopped at a Rajasthani dhaba for Lunch.
    Somewhere ahead of Sankeshwar

After that did some long non-stop streches.Reached Karad around 7:30.Just 4-5 kms before Satara, bike went into a deep pothole which was right in the middle of the road. And a nightmare happened, initially i thought its a puncture. But when i reached satara i came to know that the RIM is badly bent and had developed few cracks around the bent.
I went to few automobile shops to check if this can be repaired, but no positive response. So i decided to ride it till Pune.
Damn those 105 Kms were very difficult moments for me.Reached home at 11:30 midnight.

    Cheers

      Great stuff there, Biru!
Jog falls is mesmerizing in the Monsoon season!
Also, you should have tried 'Sigandoor'. The place becomes a peninsula during the Monsoon rains and is connected only by a ferry(Sirsi end) which transports people as well as vehicles from one side to the other. It's really worth a visit. I had a great time driving our car into the ferry and taking it out and it is just beyond words. The path is very steep and slippery too! Anyways, make it there the next time.

Good stuff Biru, you should have stayed overnight at Dandeli, there is water rafting which is prime attraction over there.

You are lucky to see Jog falls at full stretch, last time when we went it was completely dried.
          Give way to trains.

A pot hole right in the middle of NH4? Yes, the recent rainfalls have taken their toll on NH4 as well.
