  • The Unfinished Business!!

    12 June 2010
    Vaibhav:
    Archit:
    Me:

This was the conversation that took place between three guys, stuck at Sarchu as B-La was closed due to a heavy land slide and the whole glacier came down on the road. They tried crossing it, but all went in vain, and they had to cover a whole 1500KMs in place of 500KMs..
With heavy heart, they started their bikes, looked back at the B-La and out of anger, frustration and hope they promised each other to scale it before the end of this season.

    9th Sep 2010

More than three months have passed since that fateful day and the promise was yet not complete. I had a chat with the two guys and since our other ride plan went under the covers so we thought of completing this unfinished promise.
So, the decision to ride to B-La was made and that too before a few hours of the ride.

Puneet has been on rides to Himachal before as well, and his love for the place in unquestionable. This lad spent a whole Month, roaming around in Himachal, exploring different places and learning about their culture and lifestyle.

    Day 1 Route:

Pandoh is a dam en route Manali and has a beautiful lake

    En route Aut Tunnel :

We started our journey again and reached Manali at around 2:00 P.M. via Bhunter and Naggar.

Somehow, we tread through those s#i^^Y roads and ascend towards Rohtang. Now I hope you remember, that this was my first time up there and all I know of Rohtang is traffic Jam and bad roads. The bad roads were there, hell I was riding on them.. but where is Traffic? All I could manage to see was two Electras, one CBZ X and my Dragon. Where is everybody else? What happened to the traffic? All of them went down the valley? Why are we all alone?

Me, engrossed in my thoughts lost sight of them and was lost all alone on the road. The road conditions Improved and clouds started hovering around us, It is always a good feeling to ride through them, and a few shops came up. I had an impression that Rohtang will be somewhere nearby and I zoomed ahead. Soon, I saw something and stopped to click it..

    So, time for some pics:

    The Riders:

After spending sometime at Rohtang, we started off to Khoksar. Now, initially we planned to stay at Khoksar and start for the journey ahead the next day. But, when we reached there, puneet declared that it was too early to call it a day and we should try for Keylong. With 70 Kms left, we also agreed on the suggestion and continued. The roads from Khoksar to Keylong is in good condition with a very few rough patches. We reached Keylong at 7:45 at night and searched for a hotel.. after getting a good deal of Rs 200/Room, we unloaded our steeds had bath and went to sleep but only after a round of drink each.

            Day 2 Route:

Well, but I was sure the worst was over and I was re-affirmed about this, coz I saw this from my balcony:

But wait, Vaibhav does not look in good mood. We go back to him, and he says some nut has fallen and his silencer has come out loose. So we searched for a mechanic or rather, a mechanic whose shop is open.
Interesting fact about Mechanics: They open there shops on their own convenience and have no fixed timings.
Hence, we waited and we waited some more. It was around 12:00 till we waited and lost our patience and started searching for some Jugaadsborrowed
            So here they are:

We started again, only to reach Darcha at 1:30. We again took some leisure time here and did whatever we wanted to do at that time.

            What was I clicking?

            Tals

So, there we stood, atop Baralacha - la and I say to myself: Why are you here? What bought you here?

The thoughts came back to me as soon as we started and I engulfed myself in searching for the answer. It was only sometime before Darcha, that I found what I was looking for. The reason for this ride.. and it was the basic instinct we all tourers share: Curiosity..

            The Unfinished Business.

Had a wonderful lunch with some amazing Lemon Tea and started back for Keylong.
There is a Waterfall after Keylong and since, light was dim, I and Vaibhav tried getting some Silky Waterfall

We went back to our rooms while the others went out to have a merry time, I laid in my bed, thinking about the day passed. It was a day full of events, from the dawn to dusk, I felt as if I have learned something, not sure of what it was I tried giving some thoughts to it but was soon in the deep slumbers of sleep. The last thing I remember was: I saying: Good Night Keylong.

But wait, Vaibhav does not look in good mood. We go back to him, and he says some nut has fallen and his silencer has come out loose. So we searched for a mechanic or rather, a mechanic whose shop is open.

To add on to that, what actually happened was that somewhere while ascending Rohtang, due to the very rough terrain, the T-rod which holds the two panels of the foot-rests together fell off. Now, as the swing-arm axle was holding the foot-rest/gear lever as well as the silencer, I failed to notice that the T-rod had come off. Trouble began near Sissu, when the swing-arm axle nut became loose, owing to the extra burden suddenly imparted to it and that is when the situation came to my notice.

              This picture should clarify:

However, there was no option but to continue till Keylong.

The next day, we waited for like 2.5 hours outside a roadside (pretty much the only mech who works on moto-bikes in Keylong) mechanic's shut door. But as there was no sign of him. We had to go to B-top the same day and I couldn't risk taking it there in such a condition. Because in some time, even the swing-arm axle would give way and then the whole panel, on both the sides would come crashing down. And then I would be in deep sh**!

Hence we thought of an alternative ourselves. First of all, I looked around and I saw chassis of different vehicle lying around unused. I unscrewed on T-rod and tried to fit it in my bike, but that didn't work.

Thats when we took two bolts and clutch cable (that were scattered around the mech's shop). We slid in the clutch cable from one end and tied both it's ends on the foot rest. Next, we hammered in the two nuts from both sides till they were firm, and then sped off to Baralacha!

I had to stop twice enroute to hammer one of the bolt in, as due to bad terrain, it was sliding off.

                    Day 3 Route

                    Near Keylong:

                    Near Sisu:

Bakar and clicking photographs of ourselves and our steeds.

                    Gaurav Jani.
the rear tyre having a gala time
The Road conditions were hell till Marhi and we somehow reached Marhi. After that, we started with Manali as our next stop.
Thanks to good roads, we reached Manali at 2:00 in afternoon, got our tanks filled and left for Naggar as our next stop for Lunch. The road from Manali to Naggar is a pleasant experience, with apple orchards on the side of the roads and some beautiful vistas of the valley.

Had our Lunch at Naggar and enquired about the route and road conditions to Chindi. We got a call from Ranjeet over here, and he told us that he had already reached there and was in a process to book rooms for all of us. After a bit of discussion, we left Naggar, only to stop at Pundoh Bazaar, as this is the place where a road goes towards Chail Chowk, Ruhanda and then to Chindi.
                    En route Pandoh:

We reached Ruhanda, which is 30 KMs from chail chowk at 10:00 at night and Chindi which is around 45 KMs in next 1.5 Hrs.
It had been a long day for us and a tough day for our Steeds and backs. We covered a huge distance, scaled the Sh#$%iest pass and rode for 5 hrs in dark. This did called in for some celebrations, so we unpacked our bottle of good times had a few shots and slept off in Hotel Mamleshwar, Chindi .

                    Day 4 Route

Some pics from The Mamleshwar, Chindi..

The return journey is always painful and disheartening and so was this one too. We rode our steeds with no interest of going back to our normal
                    Some Pics en route:

We finally caught up with Vaibhav at Naldhera and started our return together hence forward. Took a snack break at Kandaghat and were finally at Chandigarh at 6:30 in the evening.
