  • Leh Ladakh in August 2010 - not just riding but experiencing

I am planning Leh Ladakh for a long time now. Me and wife are getting ready for this year's ride. I saw quite a few posts from Pune bikers regarding the same, so thought maybe there should be a discussion thread on this.

    Some terms for this trip:
    1. Riding is a part of trip, not the reason of the trip. We will enjoy the rides, but not like we have to break records and backs. Usually one day of full riding will be followed by one day of full sightseeing.

    2. Drinking and smoking will not be part of the trip. You can do if you want, but it's certainly not a part of the itinerary.

    3. Budget will of course be strictly maintained , but preference will always be to keep hygiene and not just to save money.

In short, this thread invites adventure couples and even singles, who want to experience the culture and places, and not just roads. If you fit the bill, I am awaiting your posts in this thread.

Ideally, we will take trains as near as possible and then ride on. There will certainly be no ride to and fro Mumbai and Delhi, as train is much better mode of transport. The leaves are costly, and we don't even have the 15th August holiday. Still, I think 2 weeks minimum will be required.

This is not restricted for Mumbai Pune bikers only, anyone from all over country, who fits the above criteria is welcome.

she still complains that I gave her a 'dhoka' the first time. Got married in Jun '08 and went off solo to Leh in Aug '08 . Enough of the OT stuff!

Folks - do we have any tentative plans / timelines? doing delhi - manali - leh both ways cuts down time significantly.

Also, could we cover Nubra valley and two days at Pangong Tso?

Edit: Remembered one more thing - shipping the bikes till Chandigarh also cuts down another 5 hours of riding the first day. So the plan tentatively becomes CHD - manali - Sarchu / Pang - Leh - K Top - Nubra - K Top - Leh - Pangong - Leh - Sarchu / Pang - Manali - Delhi. Comfortably done in around 2 - 2.5 weeks.

Its not enough to know how to twist the throttle; you must have judgement to know when and where to do it.

Actually just cutting down the time is not a priority, as we may not visit the place as a couple for some time soon. I read the tours start from manali and end at shrinagar. Any idea about such route?

                          1.I ride GS150R.
                          2. So far, only I ride, but I hope to teach her riding soon. She rides a scooter.
                          3. This will be a seperate post! Main things are spares, light weight clothes and thermalwears.
                          4. None yet, but this is a good point. We may get some back support belt for both of us, as the rides aren't smooth.
                          5. Sorry didn't get this question.
                          6. This is being discussed in this thread!

abhiwar, there are many groups who will be doing such rides. So you can either join them, or you can time your departure so that you arrive there the same time we are.

@animeher: Given that you would have pillion, there wont be enough space to mount your belongings, and obviously having lady rider means extra stuff to package arround. So was wondering how do you plan to package your luggage and mount on your bike.

If you check my Rajasthan ride travelouge, we have a tankbag + saddlebag + one bagpack, which we feel is enough for 2 riders. Otherwise, there is always an option to carry luggage and keep it at some base where we would return after a long trip (like Leh in this case).
