I really dunno what work does the Varanasi Municipal Corporation do? I too have never ever heard praises about the city and everyone had something or the other (bad) to say.

    Crisp & Clear photos

Ya even I think the same, they should emphasize upon beautifying the city, maintaining and "building" good roads, keeping the stray animals off and stuff like that, it would be heaven then. Thanks for the appreciation.

      @ ALL

I hope you're ok with the pace I'm posting the log and the pics as it's really difficult to sort the pics and jot down the entire trip log

It feels so great to hear things like this! I feel really special when someone appreciates what I like doing. While the world is running behind the life of every "biker", there is atleast ome community which has some sensible people to understand the spirit, the want, the desire and the need of a thirsty soul!

The pace is good and an update every 1-2 day is nice

I have toured a lot solo and due to my geographical location, most of my rides have been solo affairs.

Are there enough Motels on the highway for a night-rest which are safe and you can park your Motorcycle with abandon & trust the security? The BP Ghar types.

                  Chapter 3

                  9.11.2010: A Tourist in Kolkata

Was back in the guest house to collect the essentials and wanted to know about the attractions in the city and if they all could be covered in one day. To this, every answer was a firm no. But to my luck, everything was in the vicinity of my lodging. Anyhow, it was there and then decided that I would be on the streets but will have to be back by 5.

Anyhow, Victoria Memorial was just a stone throw away from this place and I walked my way down to the monument. Purchased an entry ticket for Rs. 10 and entered the beautifully maintained monument.

The building houses a collection of everything from letters and treaties from the colonial periods to very old photographs and weapons. No cameras are allowed inside the monument so was not able to click pictures of the interior of the building. The garden around the Victoria memorial is really beautiful and is an ideal place for couples to enjoy a chat.

The next was Birla Planetarium, just next to the Cathedral. Being an Astronomy fan, this topped my must see list in Kolkata. However, by the time I was there the show had already started and the next show was in Bengali. So I decided to give it up as it would be no more than another astronomy show, similar to what we have in Delhi, and would speak about some stars, constellations, galaxies and planets, which I already have a fair knowledge off! So it was only the exterior that was photographed as the building look somewhat attractive.

                  G.P.O

                  Writer's Building

The much talked about Millennium Park was bugging me up big time, so decided to give it a shot as it was again nearby. The entry through the railway track compelled me to raise my brow but the terrific backdrop of the Hoogli River really stunned me. Took a mesmerizing ferry ride across the river which allowed me to capture two of the most beautiful pieces of engineering, the Howra Bridge and the Anand Sagar Setu.

The ferry ride was truly enchanting and made me lost into my own dream world in a flash. Came back in the same ferry and walked along the length of the Millennium Park only to find that the ferry ride was no way a part of the park, but it was a means of transport instead. Ironically, the park is a place for hanging around, especially for couples. Science City, one of the latest attractions was the next stop.

Reached the Science City after a while and found it to be pretty appealing. Dolphin show, Space Theater, Time Machine, Energy Ball, Live Science Show are just a few names to be mentioned. Explored the entire area, right from the butterfly house to the Evolution Park. Everything was just mind blowing.

Now it was the time to go back and prepare for a long journey the next day. Sticking to the planned schedule I was back in the guest house by 5, went to a local mechanic and got the oil changed and other minor stuff done and now I was all set to reach the Port city of India, Visakhapatnam.

Went to McDonalds, had my dinner, got the breakfast packed and was lost in my dream world in no time. That marked the end of the day.

Thanks. The camera is just an entry level SLR, Canon 1000D.

The Kolkata-Vizag and Chennai-Bangalore stretch were the most painful stretches. Will let you know soon. Not much action though, a couple of instances will keep you hooked

                          Chapter 5

                          11.11.10: Kolkata-Visakhapatnam

The day started early. Woke up at the wee hours when the entire Kolkata was asleep. It was around 3.30 am when I woke up and off the bed by 3.40. The entire purpose of waking up at this hour and commencing the ride this early was just to keep the revs low, extract maximum mileage and cover the long distance with a bad patch before Bhuvaneshwar in time. Soon I was all set to hit the roads and experience the charm of Southern India for the first time.

Exiting Kolkata is simply a nerve wrecking experience, atleast for me it was. With perfect no knowledge of Bengali, I was left at the mercy of a few people who knew Hindi. Trucks plying on a single lane pot holed road are sure to bug you up. Pulled over to a petrol bunk to get the top up and asked the way out of the city. Making my way through crawling trucks, I finally asked the way out of the city and headed towards the Bombay Road.

Soon I was on the open stretches of the awesome NH6 and headed towards Kharagpur form where I had to take my way towards Bhubaneshwar. The mystified landscape along the highway thrilled me to the core as it was simply breathtaking. However, even amidst this lovely landscape, I was not comfortable riding on the highway as I said NH6 and I though I was supposed to be riding on NH5. Hence, the first stop came as soon as just 34 km into the ride to check the map, and I was happy to find myself on the right road.

The sun came up soon and it was time to capture some beautiful moments of the ride.

Such lonely are the highways that I had enough time to park my bike across the road, adjust the focus, put the self-timer on and get the pic clicked after 10 seconds!

Gliding on the beautiful NH6, I soon came across the West Bengal-Orissa border and the condition of the roads deteriorated. What I had at the border was a damn narrow stretch of road with truck parked on both side of the road and just enough space left to let a truck pass through. The potholes and uneven surface of the road added to the woes.

No pictures clicked after that, it was just the road, the bike and my endurance. Kilometer after kilometers, the bike cooperated with me and I finally stopped after completing around 350km at a stretch, breaking my previous record of 250km on the IBA Saddle Sore ride. The Reason for stopping was just to click some great pictures of the awesome scenery with the sky painted with all the beautiful shades of pink, orange and blue. However, it took me a life to remove the polythene because of the electric tape. I finally had to tear down the polythene and the rope just to quickly take out the camera and start clicking.

Although the sky being cloudy, I did not encounter any rain and reached the Port city of India as planned. Found a nice hotel with (fortunately) an underground parking and decided to call it a day soon. Fished out information about Bajaj Probiking in Visakhapatnam as I was in a full mood of getting the bike serviced the next day. Had a not so tasty meal in one of the restaurants nearby and went off to sleep!

                          Some Pics from the ride:

I am hooked buddy. It's not everday people have guts to travel alone across the stetches you have crossed. I lived in three of the states you have passed all my life and yet it would take me a bigger set of balls to ride across alone.
