  • Bhangarh. A trip to the lost world.

After Months of no activity on the touring front, i finally decided to get back on Road.

This year, The rains lasted continuesly for over 3 months. And my bike was standing in rain all these months. call it my laziness or ignorence, but i almost stopped using my bike for few reasons.
And the result:- The day i tried to start my bike, there was no pressure building up in the engine. so i tried and tried but all went in vain.
Took the bike to a mechanic, found that Bike is very angry with me and now is asking for some goodies as token for being so ignorent against her.
Hence gave her few goodies in the form of new valves, Piston, Clutch plates, cone set, new headlight cowl, New MF Battery and tank cleaning.

Had to control my wrist for atleast 500kms. So, decided to go to hometown on Bike after almost 7-8 months.
Ride was awesome and while returning to make a touring plan and implement it within a month.

Lots of ideas came in, talked to few people. And finally 3 people from my old office decided to go on tour to Bhangarh and Jaipur. All went well until 2 backed off at last moment. And the third guy was a new rider. he got a P220 around 2 months back and i've been teaching him about the safe riding and have been giving him tips.
Going on a trip with a guy who is new to biking and has never been to highway was a tricky task. But he is a fast learner and decided to make this as a learning curve for him.

SO, now it was two of us, A weekend, well maintained bikes and a Destination. i.e: BHANGARH.

A teaser in the form of 3 pics and the log and the rest of the pics will continue from tomorrow evening.

    On the way to Bhangarh.

    The ancient market bylanes:

    The Fort Wall:-

    To be continued........

So here i start the Journey:-
It was Saturday early morning that we decided to move to Bhangarh and then to Jaipur. But got call from one friend that he has to leave for Lucknow and the other had some other issues. Now we were 2 guyz left. Abhishek and I. Abhishek is quite a new rider, hence i knew that i'll have to ride almost 30-40% slow then the normal speed i ride on Highway. That means more time on road and less time to actually visit all the places.
Another blow came in the form of some issues in Abhishek's CCNA classes. Half of the saturday was lost. Now there was no use of riding to Bhangarh as we would not be able to see it. and then will not have time to go and visit jaipur. Hence dropped the idea of Jaipur and decided to go to Bhangarh early morning on Sunday. Yeah lost complete saturday.
Opened up Google maps and decided as to which route to take. There are around four routes from Delhi which a person can opt.

1.> Take NH8 till "Dharuhera", take left on NH 71B and then take right for "State Highway 25". Now don't leave SH 25 till you are on the outskirts of Alwar. Instead of taking left, Go straight on "Papari Rd". Take right from "center Point Mall" and then take left from the intersection to get onto "State Highway 14". Now go straight from "Bijli Ghar Circle" and then take right from "S.M.D Circle" to get to "SH 13". After Akbarpur, it's beautiful road with mountain range on both the sides. After about 26 Kms on SH13, you will get a turn for "District Road 27". take this route. After About 8 Kms take left for "SH 29A". Then after around 42 Kms take left for "NH11". After around 3Kms, you will reach Bhangarh.
    Total Distance:- 236KMs

2.> This route is same as about till the outskirsts of Alwar. Instead of going straight on "Papari Rd", take Left to stay on "SH 25". you will cross "Kherado" - "Samola" - "Burja" - "Rajgarh". After "Rajgarh" take right to stay on "SH 25A". Go straight till "Tehla" and take left for "SH 29A".
After about 25 Kms, take left for "NH 11A". After riding for almost 2-3 kms, you will reach Bhangarh.
    Total Distance:- 243 Kms

3.> GO straight on "NH 8" for about 56 Kms and take left for "SH 14". After "Sadowas" take right for "SH 52". you will cross by "Harsora" - "Bansur". After covering around 23Kms on "SH 52", take slight right to get to "SH 52/13". After about 20 Kms take right for "SH 55". On this route you will cross by "Gudha" - "Bamanwas" - "Kishori" - "Jhiri". After riding on this route for about 28Kms, takeleft for "NH11". After riding for about 14 kms on "NH11", you will reach "Bhangarh"
    Total Distance:- 253Kms

4.> Move on NH8 till your cross "Shahpura" and "Manoharpur"(about 135Kms), then take Left on "NH11A", You will cross by "Pratapgarh" and "Ajabgarh". after 32Kms take right to stay on "Nh11A". after covering another 28 Kms, you will reach Bhangarh.
    Total Distance:- 268Kms
This route sounded straight with better roads. Hence selected this route for the trip.

Finally the morning arrived and thanks to the lazy behaviour and the nice weather, i did not come out of bed till 8AM. We were again running late.
got ready in jiffy. and we were out on road by 9:00AM. Filled up the tanks and thank god coz we did not encounter the usual traffic. It was almost empty roads all the way till the Gurgaon Toll Plaza. But Abhishek being new to riding, took long time to adjust to the highway. Had to continously give him tips and instructions as how to ride and how to overtake and follow the lanes. I must say he has the zeal to learn and is a fast learner.
reached Manesar McD by 10:00 AM.

Enjoyed the Paneer wraps with hot Cafe Latte. Clicked few pics and saw one aged couple waving at us with cheer. Felt like they saw their early years in us. Very nice and polite couple they were.

Now i did not wanted to waste any time, so we decided to not to stop till we cross 100 Km's.
The roads were awesome. with few very nice bends and lovely landscapes. The weather was on our side and it was just perfect to ride.

Abhishek could not cross speed of 70 for initial 30-40 Km's but gradually he adopted the Highway and started cruising at 80 Km/h and sometime 90 km/h. But asked him to be very causious and asked him not to take any risks. By the grace of god, we did not encounter any trouble on the way. The speeds which we were maintaining, i guessed that we will reach Bhangarh within 6 or Max 7 Hours.
The next stop was at a highway Tourist Dhaba with CCD and few factory outlets at Shahpura. Enjoyed the Lunch and got freshen up. Then realised that it was already 3:00PM and we were way to behind our schedule.

After Shahpura we were supposed to ride till Manoharpur to take the NH11. As planned we crossed Shahpura and reached Manoharpur and got to the point from where we were supposed to turn left. Confirmed with locals and they said that we are on the right track.
Now things slipped from our hands as soon as we took the left and the whole journey, plans and the schedule went for toss.
what happened and how it happened will follow soon.

    To be Continued.

    Journey Continued
Took the left turn as planned to get to NH11. Also to make sure that we were on the right route, confirmed with 3 diffrent locals. They all said that it was the right route.
And even though we had the map, we still kept on asking the locals about the route. Did not wanted to wander without direction.

After riding about an hour, we got to see a really beautiful stretch. with wild grass on both sides and at a near distance: Mountains plus well carpetted straight road.

But after riding for some more time, realised that it was too narrow a road to be a National Highway. but the landscape was so beautiful that we did not pay any heed to the intuition about something being wrong.

Kept on riding untill we checked the time and it was 6:00PM. something somewhere went wrong. Did not know how and when. Because we should be at Bhangarh by now but there was no sign of either Bhangarh or any kind of civilization.
Got a Y point and got a person there. checked with him and got to know that we are on a completly wrong route and it takes us away from Bhangarh, rather than taking us to it.
That person was very helpful. He made us a map and gave every instruction in detail. He came as an angel to save our day but we were already late now to enter bhangarh fort hence decided to get a room nearby.
started riding and saw this beautiful fort on a hilltop. asked a local but he could not say anything about the fort.

But the destination was still about 50 kms from where we were standing.
Abhishek was worried and was afraid of uncountable reasons and probations.
Started riding towards the destination and found the area very creepy. it was already dark and the feel and the environment around us sent shivers down our spine.
we were just getting used to the creepy feeling when we came across a small temple and above it was the full moon.

Offered prayers from the point we were standing and started our journey again.
Strangely after crossing the temple, we got to a road which was narrow with dense plantation around. also sometime back few locals asked us to be cautious as we were close to sariska and according to them it has few wild animals in there. Suddenly my bike started behaving like there was no fuel. I thought i might have hit the reserve so turned the knob. Still nothing. And the bike halted at that very place. tried again and again to start the bike but nothing. asked Abhishek to turn his bike and aim his projector headlamp onto my bike.
checked the fuel pipe and there was no fuel in it. checked the tank and it still had good amount of fuel. Could not understand.
After about 10 minutes, the fuel automatically started flowing from the fuel pipe. connected it back and the bike started in first kick itself. I can't express in words as how much relieved i felt.
    started moving again.
Now just about 15 kms from we encountered a water channel which was flowing from above the road. just like mountain rivers which sometime flows about the road and we have to cross the stream. It was exactly the same case here. And it was dark and we did't know how deep the water is. Anyhow Abhishek took the initiative and slowly started crossing the stream. I followed him and without touching down crossed the stream in few seconds.
After about 6-7 kms, we reached a a creepy village. ruins on both sides of the road and in a way which resembles any horror movie. felt like at every nook and corner there was a evil spirit ready to strike. As we crossed this stange village wherein we could not see even a single living being, we saw a temple. Probably sarsadevi temple. It had rooms so decided to stay there for night. checked with the only person there and to our surprise, he was very rude and arrogant. He did't listen to what we had to say, but said clear no for night stay. Realised that there was no use of talking to that person we decided to move on.
It was already 8:00PM by now. And finally we were at Bhangarh.
There was this small shop and the person was helpful. told him about the guy in temple and he informed that the person has a bad name in the area and is about to be thrown out. Hence he is behaving in such a way with everyone who visits the place.
He tried to arrange a place but could not. Asked him about the closest Hotel. It was in Dausa. Another 28 Kms from Bhangarh.
Had no option but to go to Dhausa and stay there for night.
The road was in acceptable condition and we covered the distance in 30 minutes.
Once reached, i was happy for the first time in the whole day to see the civilisation again. searched around and asked few people. Got to know about a decent hotel. "The Pinky Hotel".
took room for night at 900/- INR with AC and arrangement for hot water.

Took shower and went down for Dinner. Saw bar, and then there was no stopping, ordered Beer and Paneer tikka with boiled eggs.
Sitting there talked about the ghostly village, the stream and how the hell on earth we lost the route and the way my bike behaved at that perticular point.
Loosing the route is something i still don't have an answer for, and a journey of 12 hours to cover a distance of total approx 300 kms was again something which made me scratch my head for long.
Anyways we were a bit tired and went for sleep as the next day we had to finish the places in Bhangarh as early as possible. Just before we could go to sleep, heard 2 dogs barking madly at someone. Opened up the balcony door and saw 2 big and awesome dogs.

Another scary moment. Clicked the above two pics of these two awesome dogs but could not get a clear one as they were little far from the range of the flash.

talked for sometime and they went to our beds, thinking about what the next day might have in store for us.

    To Be Continued...

    Day-2. A New Begining...

Woke up with the sound of Alarm. Somehow came out of bed.
went to balcony to get some fresh air, and was surprised with sudden change in weather. Felt like rain will start any time. Lord had covered the complete sky with dark clouds. Knew that pics will not come as good as they might have in a bright sunny day.Anyways took shower and dragged Abhishek out of his bed. By the time we got ready and completed our breakfast, it was already 8:30AM. went to petrolpump, got some more petrol for bike. But could not get Speed, Power or xtra premium. Hence had to settle for normal fuel.
Now we were not in any hurry as Bhangarh was just 27Kms from the hotel.
Enroute got a village and felt like that the only thing they know is making sculptures.

Talked to the people who create these beautiful Marble statues and sculptures. And they said that this is their only business and they have been doing it since ages.
After clicking few pics, moved on to out final destination.
After another 10 minutes, we were finally at out destination.

From this point, Bhangarh is only 2 Kms with well laid road. Around 300mts before, saw this place:-

    The Inner walls:-

Apart from a board which talked about these structures a part of Heritage buildings, nothing has been done to protect them. The inner walls were covered with all the writings from people who wanted to engrave their names in the history(the easiest way). Seems like ASI is only keen in maintaing the part which is within the fort wall.
Parked the bike and for the first time saw the Fort wall. Still standing in it's all glory.

Strangly, the famous board saying "Entering the ford before Sunrise and after sunset is prohibted" is no longer there.
Now, once you enter the fort, on the left hand side, there are stairs. They help you to get to the top of the Fort wall. I must say the wall is well preserved. it's really hard to tell about it's age by mere looking at it.

If you walk for about 500-600mts, there is a temple on the fort wall. said to be protecting the wall.

Once i started walking towards the palace, we were greeted by the housed which were in complete ruins. Excavation work at most of the places is on and ASI is trying to renovate the place.

As in any historical place, here too we saw many monkeys, Langoors and all their cousins and uncles

After crossing all ruins and the then market lanes, we got to the gate of the palace.
And then saw the history of the palace engraved in this stone.

Once we entered the gate of the Palace, on the right hand was the first temple. Temple is still in a good shape. But sans any statue or any sign of prayers being offered. Temple is completly empty as everything else is inside the fort.

The central roof of the temple:-

The central part of the roof:-

    The inner walls

after the temple, comes the inner wall of the palace.

The original palace structure is believed to be seven storied. But now only four is remaining.

The palace was almost destroyed, but ASI succesfully repaired some portions of the top existing floor. you call it coincidence or the power of god. Apart from temples, nothing could prevent itself from going down the history books. the temples are still in very good shape.

Once we were done with everything, it was already 3PM and it was time to return to the civilization.
This time the journey was very smooth.
Crossed the same stream and realised that last evening i was just few inches away from the edge. And the same ghostly town gave us less haunted feeling. Last night we took almost 10 minutes to cross that horrible stretch but now took less then 2 minutes.
after about 30 kms, saw a lake on the right hand side and few ancient structures and building submerged into it.
the weather wanted us to spend some more time on road, hence it started raining. due to mud and dust on the highway, it became very difficult to ride at my usual speed. Abhishek was more confident now and was cruising at better speeds.
took around 45 minutes break for lunch with hot tea.And i'm telling you, nothing beats tea at a dhaba on a rainy day.
By 10PM we were back in Delhi.
Said Adios to abhi as he had to go to office and i returned home.

In many ways this was very refreshing ride. Got to ride on almost every kind of road. The awesome NH8, and state highway 11, the straight stretch between the mountain range, the off roading, the stream and the rains.
Done for now, but will be back on road soon.

        History of Bhangarh:
Bhangarh is a place between Jaipur and Alwar in Rajasthan state of India. Bhangarh is known for its ruins, but still worth a visit; the place is beautiful and tranquil. What remains though, is a shadow of a once beautiful kingdom.
Passing by Bhangarh, banyans and temples dot the landscape and one chhatri can be seen up on the hill. The most remarkable are the temples of Gopinath, Shiva (Someshwar), Mangla Devi and Keshava Rai. Other more or less preserved buildings are e.g. shops along the main road, several havelis, a mosque, and a palace. The palace was protected by two inner fortifications across the valley. The town is separated from the plain by ramparts with five gates. Bhangarh is also a pre-historic site.

        The Legend
It is said that the city of Bhangarh was cursed by the Guru Balu Nath, causing the towns evacuation. Balu Nath sanctioned the establishment of the town but said: "The moment the shadows of your palaces touch me, the city shall be no more!" Ignorant of such foreboding, one ambitious descendant raised the palace to such a height that its shadowed Balu Nath's forbidden retreat and thus the town was devastated as prophesied. The small samādhi where Balu Nath is said to lie buried is still there.
The other myth is as follows: The charm of princess of Bhangarh Ratnavati was said to be matchless in all of Rajasthan. Being eighteen years old, the princess started getting matrimonial offers from other states. In the same region there lived a tantrik, a magician well versed in the occult, named Singhia who was desperately in love with the princess knowing that he would never be allowed to even see her, let alone meet her. One day, he saw the princess' maid in the market buying scented oil for her. Seeing this, he got an idea by which he could meet the princess. He used his black magic and put a spell on the oil which would hypnotize the princess by her merely touching the oil, and she would surrender herself. The princess foiled this plan though. She had seen the tantrik enchanting the oil, and she therefore threw it away, whereupon the flagon rolled over a stone. As soon as the oil touched the stone, it started rolling towards the wicked tantrik and crushed him. While dying, Singhia cursed the palace with the death of all who dwelt in it, without any rebirth in their destinies. The very next year there was a battle between Bhangarh and Ajabgarh and Ratnavati died.

There are few stories floating around the place. Have mentioned the truth and the legend in my 1st post. Although the second legend about "Singhia" is very prominent in the surrounding areas. I talked to few people and they all came up with same story.

In the last few decades there is not even a single reported incident. The warning by ASI is mostly based on the stories and the Myth.

It's not only known as one of the most haunted places in India but in world.

Whether Haunted or not but this place tends to be very creepy after dark.

Wont term it as scary but it is unlucky.
