Day 12 : Chandertal Lake to Manali, via Rohtang Pass

A momentous but sad day, for us. This was going to be our last day of riding in the Spiti valley, we would all seriously come to miss this place, it had offered us so much, it had humbled us so much in its might. It had forced us to stick back to the basic nature of human life, which we had joyfully discovered, it had kept us away from the tensions of a materialistic environment, enveloping us in an aura of a perfectly sensible world, yet this was our last day with it.

We left by 9 am from Chandertal, with a plan to hit Manali by close of day. The whole day was a daze today, there were no proper roads, mostly dirt tracks or those lined up with stones. We rode on the bright sunlight for what seemed like endless loops and straight roads of these nature till we reached Gramphoo. A small tea break here and we left off, till we were overjoyed at the sight of paved roads, although we should have known these roads were taking us to hell!!! A few kms later the roads were taking us higher and higher, till we reached Rohtang!! It was so foggy and freezing cold, the mist was so cold that it had seeped through my leather gloves and left my fingers frozen, and with my open face helmet it was even worse. Visibility was less than a few feet, we switched on our lights, regrouped, with the R15 leading the way with its better headlights, and the riders sticking close and using indicators…

Things only got worse when the roads soon turned into knee deep slush, and then to further add over it, there was traffic too!! It was stop and go traffic all the way down, with us crawling all over the slush road, each time we kept our foot down it would disappear in the slush. One of our hardest sections ever, it left us physically and mentally exhausted. But once we reached the bottom, good roads beckoned us, we stopped once to look back onto the hills and made a promise to come back again, to hit the valley of Leh.
From Rohtang it was a lovely ride to the city of Manali, enjoying the sudden greenery all around and a general feeling of being happy…

We avoided going into Manali city and instead booked into a hotel on the outskirts. We washed the bikes and gave it a checkup, gave the entire bike a good dose of WD40 as well to keep it in shape. We relaxed for a while, freshened up, was lazing around till we had dinner and again zzzzzzzzz….
