I am very impressed with the kind of support I am getting here. Thank all of you. Updated travel plan is

      Feb 26 Mumbai to Belgaum --- 500
      Feb 27 Belgaum to B'lore --- 500

      Mar 3 Suggest
Mar 4 Alleppy /Trivandrum Enquire with railway officials about parceling the bike.
Mar 5 Alleppy /Trivandrum Load the Bike Train departs at 12.50 pm .After that move to cochin
Mar 6 Cochin Flight to Mumbai at 11.20 am.

Any body has idea about the Netravati express which usually departs from Trivandrum, March onwards is departing from Alleppy. Is it right? The irctc is allowing to book tickets from Alleppy and the train is not listed when I am trying to book it from Trivandrum. (Shows 'ISL STN DELETED') The return journey of the train i.e. from Mumbai to Trivandrum is available for the same date. I will have to load the bike on starting station. I don’t understand whether I have to load it from Trivandrum or Alleppy. Help!!!!

        may i suggest a tri-state:

        day 1-2: mumbai - mangalore (gokarna,udupi,etc)
day 3: mangalore - wayanad (bekal fort, mahi, rought jungle roads or via calicut)
day 4: wayanad - cochin (calicut, thrissur temple square)
day 5: cochin - aleppey - cochin (backwaters)
day 6: cochin - ooty (palakkad, nilgiris, coimbatore)
day 7: ooty - bangalore (mudumalai, bandipur forests, mysore)
day 8-9: bangalore - mumbai (blank straight good road)

you can choose the reverse too if you like.

if i were you i wud stick to this.
there is 1.5 days of round trip. the rest is new roads all the way = not boring and repetitive.
the initial coastal and Kerala roads are tight but you would enjoy more in the start rather than the end.
and bangalore-mumbai is dry so is good to keep for the end.

if you really wish to ride and make this trip worthwhile, ride it completely. its not often that you get 9 days of leaves, time and money. think... good luck.

EDIT: i guess its 4 state and 2 UT (if mahi is still a UT ie :S)

I'm just wondering if it's advisable to do the Athirapally- valparai route if he's riding solo. If he is not intent on doing that route or visiting valparai, he could get to Munnar easily the next morning directly through Angamaly - Perambavoor - Kothamangalam.

We (a group of 3) did Pollachi - valparai - athirapally - munnar - marayur - udumalpet last month and found the valparai - athirapally stretch quite lonely. Remember, no mobile signals or civilization and bad roads for half the distance. And there's a chance to bump into elephants even in the munnar - udumalpet route (like we did) around chinnar forest, though the road has a much higher traffic density compared to the valparai - athirapally route.
.... and I took the road less traveled!

Travel tales of an insatiable wanderlust

Yes thats what my heart says. I would prefer being on the bike and exploring places. If I am able to do that that will be great achievement for me. I am keeping Plan B (return via train) ready too.

Neither do we need to book in advance to take the bike in train as parcel .
Just walk in to any railway station (in your case preferabily ernakulam or allepy where train will have atleast 15 minute stop)
book your bike as parcel to mumbai .They will take care of loading the bike to the train .
I have done it many times( last time bike was Karizma) all the time the bike reached detination touchwood .
Just pay some extra money to the packing person to pack it well.

              Feb- 28 : Bangalore – Mysore – Gundulpet – Munthanga – Sulthan Battery - Kalpeta - 300 KM
              March 1 :
Roam around wayanadu Edakkal caves , (please avoid kuruva island , this need atleast half day and not worth time time)
Banasura sagar dam and other places . If you start early you can cover all the places in the same day .
While going for banasura sagar dam do take Vythiri-Tharavana road . This road is really awsome full of corners one after the other you will really enjoy it. Night halt at kalpetta or lakkidi(Total around 100 km ).
              March 2:
Kalpetta - Adivaram (You will really enjoy this stretch as you will be climbing down all the way ) - Thamarasseri- Calicut-
Thrissur - Chalakkudi - Athirappali/vazhachal water falls - Night halt (total 220 Km)
March 3 : Athirappalli - Valparai - Pollachi - Udumalpeetu- Marayur - Munnar (YOu will really love this ride the route is really awsome)
              March 4: Munnar - Kumily - Thekkadi - Peerumedu - Kuttikkanam - Vagamon - Kottayam -Night halt
We have to plan this day with the help of persons like praveen who know the place really well .
If we plan well we can cover almost all the places like calvary mount , parunthu para and cover all the places in a single day
March 5: Kottayam - Alleppy -50 Km . Book your bike as parcel . Do all the procedure .
After noon just realx your self in back waters of allepy (house boat / Normal boat ride , You will get cheap deals there )
By night catch a bus/train to Ernakulam (Better have the night halt at Aluva which is more near to Airport) .
March 6 : Aluva - Airport (15 Km ) Travel back to mumbai

This is a very rough itenary which will cover Wayanadu , athirappali , valparai , Munnar , Thekkadi , Vagamon and alleppy .
We can work on this and finer the things according to your taste .
This is very nice and detailed one.....I will try to cover it.

Angamaly - Perambavoor - Kothamangalam road is the normal route all vehicale take . But i suggested athirappalli - valparai - pollachi - marayur -munnar as the route is really awsome ( i am sure this will be best route he will ever do in kerala ) . Atleast more than ten persons i know did this route in solo trips . Yes the route is really have very less traffic but a really awsome experaince .

The chances of encounter elephants are there in a lot of stretches including bhandpur- wayanadu .

It depends on a lot factors like the mood of elephant , the time and the place .
Best thing to do is avoid night travelling though such routes.
In my last trip i have heard of an elephant in kutta-manathavadi road which
try to attack bike riders at night. What people will do is they will wait for a bus/truck and then tag along with that to cross the stretch .

It is pretty dangerous to travel alone in these types of routes especially at night.
In day time we can mange . Only thing is do not speed up in blind corners .
That is why i suggested to take athirappali - valparai route in morning. But pollachi - marayur have much more traffic including buses and jeeps .

Re: Solo trip ride to Kerala.... (need suggestions)

there is no fun in solo trips but if our friends or family members are with us our trip is going to be more adventures.
