  • Help: 4 Day Touring in Maharashtra Route

    Hi all!

I want to frame an excellent route in Maharashtra in and around Pune / Mumbai. Just to let the people who will be helping me out in this one that I dont want to repeat the route done last month on the Multistrada:

    Mumbai-Murud-Mahabaleshwar-Dhom Dam-Bhandardhara-Mumbai

I have been suggested a route by one of very dear friends as:

    Day 1: Pune - Rajgurunagar-Bhimashankar-Narayangaon-nashik

    Day 2 : Nashik - Trimbakeshwar - Jawahar - Ghoti - Kasara - Mumbai

    Day 3 : Mumbai - Srivardhan - Mangaon - Mulshi - Pune

However, I totally dont want to visit Mumbai and face the traffic. Also I dont know most the places mentioned above there (being a North India).

Any help in framing a better or alternate route within Maharashtra will be appreciated. I am looking at serene beautiful places (like everyone of course!) with a scope of some great photography, and yes I am always thumbs up for hill stations.

On Day 2, to avoid Mumbai. Take the following:
Jawhar, Maharashtra, India to Khopoli, Maharashtra, India - Google Maps

Basically come on Malshej - Mumbai road and then cut across towards Karjat. Have lost the GPS trails but did the road joining NH3 from SH222 few months back, was in decent condition, and SH222 to Karjat have done couple of years back it was a typical lesser traveled road.

Day 3: May be ride along the coast, various points to join the coast, instead of traveling on NH17 for too long.

It all depends on when you want to go for it ... the landscape in maharashtra changes drastically with seasons ... also the state highways (so called) are not in good condition in the places you mentioned in your post .... the best season to tour maharashtra would be Monsoon .... its heaven on earth ... especially the konkan belt !

If it should be around Pune then why don't you do Ashtavinayaka Yatra?
        you might include Pandharpur too.

        xBhp Pilgrimage ride ???

Why dont you head to Murbad after Kasara? I found the Murbad-Karjat road to be a nice little route (atleast during Monsoons).

          Here is a sample route,

Nashik, Maharashtra, India to Pune, Maharashtra, India - Google Maps

EDIT : I think Nav is also hinting at something similar.

Day 1: Pune - Rajgurunagar - Bhimashankar(Holy place, Hill Station, forest, dam, lots of good spots for photography) - Junnar(Marigold flower fields enroute) - Shivneri(Fort and Hill station, Night stay at Hotel Ashiyana - A decent hotel with non A/C rooms)

Day 2: Visit fort early morning for photography - Malshej Ghat(Some photography spots here) - Murbad - Kalyan - Kasara Ghat(Roads are Now in beautiful condition, one way traffic) - Trimbakeshwar(Holy Place, some photography spots) - Nasik(Night Stay at Nasik)

Day 3: Nasik - Kasara(Some scenic spots on this part of Kasara ghat) - Bhiwandi - Thane(Though Thane is considered more or less in Mumbai, you skip the main Mumbai city traffic by using Thane-Panvel Highway) - Panvel - Lonavala(Photography spots) - Pavana Dam(Some really nice photography spots) OR Lohgadh Fort - Mulshi - Pune.

              Small correction
              Day 3: Mumbai - Shrivardhan

Day 4: Shrivardhan -Mangaon - Mulshi - Pune

About Day 2 please follow the path as suggested by Nav. I was not sure about road condition in that route and hence didn't suggested that one.

On a second note when you are coming from Kasara you can almost completely bypass Mumbai city via the Ghodbunder, Thane route. Any Mumbai xBhpian will help you out on that.

A very good and safe biker not only because he can pop up either of the wheels, scrape his knees on a corner or go fast and make it look stylish but because he very well knows his limits and capabilities and has the patience to learn about others and ride safe ! :)

                    1. Don't miss Shivneri fort when you ride past Malshej (from Murbad - Nanded).
                    2. You can get some good photography done in Khashid, Murud, Mazgaon areas especially where the dredging is going on at the estuary
                    3. There is a road through a protected forest area when you ride on SH114 and SH115 (between vaibhavwadi and gaganbawda). You can make a loop here from NH17 and enjoy some amazing twisties and dead quiet scenery. There is a police checkpost at the beginning of these roads so don't carry booze/knives etc.
                    4. SH 116 from Ponda is also fantastic..

Don't ask me how I know...I got lost trying to get from NH17 to Kolhapur and wandered all over the place. Thankfully I was in a car because once the sun had set...the place was very eerie!

Day 3: thane -- srivardhan or diveagar - bad road--nice beaches--forest lined roads

                      Day 4: srivardhan-mangaon-mulshi-pune
                      ok ok road-- scenic surroundings--dam

I did this road a couple of months back (December I guess). And it was mostly alright apart from a horrid 10km stretch of road. Any idea on its condition now?
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Try doing Mumbai - Murud (on the way before Murud you will find beautiful beaches and driving along the coastline)
Murud is a very scenic place. From Murud you can take a ferry till Shrivardhan....it is the shortest route to reach Shrivardhan from Murud and the best one.

Near Shrivardhan don't miss the DiveAgar beach (The best, longest & most clean beach one I have seen till date). Also accomodation is very-very cheap there if you want to stay there.

From Shrivardhan - Mangaon road is okay with trees on both sides and ghat section.

I had gone there sometime before Dec and was in Car. Don't remember any bad section until I was about to join and joined NH3.
