  • [Photo Feature]: Kumaon Winter Tour

First of all I would like thank the XBHP community. You people have been a great source of inspiration. Just 2 years ago I did not know how to ride a motorcycle , let alone the idea of touring the Himalayas on a two wheeler. I have spent hours reading through all kinds of trip logs here in XBHP, which at times becomes a daily routine. It helped me prepare, learn several aspects of riding and discover a totally different world of mine which I feel myself attached to and can say that I am proud of it. Ok, enough chit chat, Lets go ahead with the trip log!

It started as two day trip to Mukteshwar; however, after finding small patches of ice along the road just before Mukteshwar we could not resist the idea of riding over black ice and walking over knee deep snow under the shadow of the mighty Himalayas, and decided to extend the ride to a 5 day trip to Munsiyari!

    Trip Summary

                            Day 2: ~150 km
                            Mukteshwar - Almora - Sheraghat – Berinag

Plan was to visit to Chauli ki jali in the morning and then start the next leg of our journey. We knew it would be difficult to reach Munsiyari (~250 km from Mukteshwar) so we decided to cover as much as we could before dark and possibly reach Chaukori. I had set alarm early at 6 am in order to capture few snaps of the mountains at sunrise but could somehow wake up only after 7 am. It was very cold outside.

Trishul, Mrigthuni, Maiktoli, Nanda Devi, Nanda Devi East & Nanda Kot

Biraj was awake by 8; we went to Chauli ki Jali but did not visit Mahadev temple due to time constraint. Packed our bags and set out at 11 am.

We reached Almora around 1 pm where we had our lunch and also cashed out some money from ATM there. From Almora there were in total of three routes to Munsiyari- one through Binsar/Bageshwar, another through Sheraghat and the last one through Pithoragarh. We again took the shortest of the lot i.e. through Sheraghat. The road till Sheraghat was amazing… smooth tarmac and Pine trees surrounding both sides of the road. But soon the torture started right after crossing Seraghat. Although I have to admit the route was very scenic, it was along a valley with a river stream flowing beside it. It was dark by the time we reached Berinag, stopped at a hotel for maggie and decided to stay there for the night. At 9 pm we went to the town for dinner, the place was like a curfew, hardly 1-2 shops open, luckily found 1 restaurant. One funny thing we observed- we had not seen a single female since we arrived at Berinag creepy huh?
