Some features of a tourer bike:
A decently powered engine for highway riding. Need to maintain a constant speed so they have a lazy characteristic. Usually shaft driven. High torque.
Need some space to carry bags. They usually have high ground clearance if there be a need to travel off road. Upright riding position for relaxed ride.
Sport-tourers are little bit faster. They are usually more powerful. Faired. And have loads of torque. To maintain high speed at low engine rpm.
Hope this helps a bit.

A Relaxed seating position, little wide handle handle bars...decent torque...air cooled...availability of basic spares / atleast managable with alternatives.....little more weight than normal city bikes to be steady on highways even when a truck crosses you at high speeds
am sure you guys would have zeroed on some RE models...
am a cast iron fan and have been with this for more than 8yrs now (Lightning 535)have done 55k kms with this, dont use this for local usage....only for touring. never had problems in any of the rides, rather not even a puncture till date...Never Give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

why you mentioned air cooled..y not liquid cooled one. It serves good job of engine cooling.

a good touring bike shall have.......
1) suffcient power
2) ample amount of torque
3) high ground clearance
4) robust and sturdy body
5) good lights
6) enough storage space or places to mount bags etc.
7) suspension settings should be adjustable by the touch of a button like bmw (desired feature , not essential)
8) additional power socket providing atleast 12v, 2.5 Amps.
9) comfortable ride

The answer to the above question is, the Rider atop the Motorcyle is what makes a motorcyle a tourer!

Quite true that liquid cooled are better, but in a country where there's more of adulterated fuel, an air cooled engine is much better than getting the engine damaged for the premium one pays.Originally posted by satheez_7 View Postone doubt.

To me, any ride can become a touring machine. all other things such as shaft driven, high GC, mono shoq, wide handle bars to heated seats, intercoms, radio are only a convenient features. To tour one doesn't need a Honda Goldwing or Multistrada, even a humble Scooty pep is sufficient, provided there's time & patience.Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

In india the air cooled engines are much more practical for touring. When one is on touring obviously he will be on speeds enough to maintain air flow enough to cool the engine. Moreover the liquid cooled engine relatively is more complicated. Hence the chances of encountering problems is higher. Many are not used to it & the road side mechs always raise their hands when asked to repair it. On the other hand the air cooled are much simpler & easier. Though IMO the liquid cooled engines consume more fuel due to the extra pumps etc.Originally posted by satheez_7 View Postone doubt.

Moreover the air cooled engines are a lot cheaper hence reducing the per km cost.
But still when it comes to better performance & cooling the LC engines rule.
Thats an ultimate answer.Originally posted by Praful View PostWhat makes a motorcycle a TOURER?

Ample torque at low rpms
Smooth vibe free cruising at 70-80kmph
Wide and supportive seat
Relaxed riding position
Good handling and stability
DC powered good headlight
Simple tech which can be repaired/supported at any roadside garage along our highways. ( Even the service centres seemed to sweat over FI and such, so I'd rather have carb, thank you!)
Points to secure luggage etc would be an added bonus
Minimal useless plastic add ons( which are supposed to increased the looks quotient) which tend to clatter over time and bad roads.RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!
