P.S If you dont have prior experience of NH4 its advisable to just make short trips so as to season up for the roads. The roads would be straight, give you an invitation to rip apart, but the dangers are totally unpredictable and just take moments to come in front of you.but anyways i guess i will have to do a detour via old highway

NH4 is THE way to go.

PS: You modding the FZ... what all do you have in mind?
Coz from what I remember Joel only has the exhaust as of now. And having that shipped across probably makes more sense than riding it all the way
I am planning a stage wise build for me bike.
Stage 1: 180cc and the exhaust and if race camshafts are available then that too
Stage 2: All major upgrades, bigger carbs, cdi etc.
I guess for the 180cc kit i would trust no one else other then Joel Anna to fiddle around with my bike's engine internals..
But that all depends on the doktor when is he ready with the performance goodies.
Originally posted by Anoop Desai View PostThe best route is Mumbai-Pune-Kolhapur-Belgaum. Halt at Belgaum. Its almost the midpoint for your ride. The next day you can cover Belgaum-Hubli-Chitradurga-Tumkur-Bangalore. Its always recommended that you cover the Hubli-Chitradurga stretch during day time. Lots of private buses ply on this road. They are very rash.
CITY LIMITS:
Yes there are interceptors, and they are mainly for the Cabbies who drive rashly. The interceptor will not be there always but, why take a chance right? What you can do is, catch hold of a Tourist bus which will be doing speeds of 70-80kmph and tail gate them till traffic comes upto your neck! Tailgating them makes the interceptor less aware of a two wheeler coming behind 6 or 8 wheeler. Make sure you maintain safe distance doing this.
This stretch between Nelamangala(Outskirts of Bangalore starts from here) and Yeshwantpur(also known as Yasvantpur) is very dangerous now. They have done a toll road here. Sometimes the toll road is flyover and other times its on par with ground. Pedestrians are allowed to cross this so called toll roads. They cross the roads in 'athlete mode' just like some fools cross open railway tracks. Keep a look on them.
OTHER ALTERNATIVES:
If you tell me the place where Joel lives, i can tell you an alternative route(like NICE road and outer ring road. former being toll road) to the normal traffic road which you have to follow to reach the heart of the city.

thanks again so much for all the info so far really appreciate it.
Now just eagerly waiting for joel anna to get back to me...

Considering you leaving mumbai by 6:00 am. . The pit stop I can suggest is Hubli. Try to have accomdation alongside NH4, else you would have to drive around 5-7 kms back into the city from the NH4 bypass. You can look around old bustand hubli for budget accomdations. There is one hotel called "Sanman" near old bustand , market circle. Though, for parking you would have to request the owner to arrange for a place. The place is clean and you get a nice double room for 300 bucks and single for 200(No luxury, clean rooms provides bath towels too
if you wish to bath
) . . .
Ride safe,
Pai
P.S If you are staying at hubli do plan to visit basveshwar khanavali for dinner . The homely dinner gives you a perfect north karnatak experienceInto hibernation mode .

Yup Joel has given the green signal regarding mods provided for FZ as already mentioned by mitz.

thats a great amount of info thanks Anoop. I am yet to receive info regarding Joel's workshop address and other details. Can you suggest any specific place to stay at belgaum?
Thank you all for providing me all the info i need. Just one last question.. which place would be ideal for pit stop and if you guys can suggest any decent hotel with parking space ofcourse!! I am planning to move out of Mumbai by 6:00 am and hopefully beat most of the traffic and may be the unpredictable weather till i hit panvel and hit the old pune highway... hopefully i should be able to cover 400 - 500 kms at a stretch on day 1 and if the roads are good like you all have mentioned, i can probably do a late start by 9:00 am on day 2!
thanks again so much for all the info so far really appreciate it.

cheers. Also if you plan to pitstop at Hubli, you will have to go deep into the city for good hotels. If its belgaum, there are many hotels just before city starts. They have ample car parking spaces, so squeezing in a bike should not be difficult. I dont know much about hotels out there. Will try to gather some info
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "Wow! What a Ride!"

hey, NH4 should be a good path to ride all the way to B'lore in my opinion...
the route you can use from Mumbai is :
Mumbai-Panvel-Khopoli-Lonavla-Pune-Kolhapur-Kagal-Nippani-Ranebennur-Tumkur-Bengaluru
I attempted the Saddlesore in Dec'10 ... So, my trip log should provide some information on this route ...
Saddlesore attempt
some patches after Ranebennur were really bad ... at that time ... dont know the current status .....
route until Ranebennur - almost 700kms from Mumbai shouldn't be a problem at all ....
If you need any help, please let us knowOnce a biker, alwayz a biker !!

Guys,
thank you all, i believe an overnight pit stop at Belgaum would be the most ideal option for me. roughly by then i would have covered half the distance. if i maintain a decent speed i should reach belgaum by evening 6 pm. (Including pit stops for bum break and photo sessions.)
Day 2 would be a relatively an easier one then.
I guess my riding report on stock bike from Mum- Bengaluru and return on 'Joeled FZ' will give everyone a genuine and fair review about the 'before' mods & 'after' mods performance, FE and other factors.
i would request the mods to kindly close this thread.

watch out for unmarked speedbreakers between chitradurga and hubli. they pop up when you least expect them, right in the middle of the smooth 6 lane highway. there are around 3-4 of them on that stretchMy travel logs - http://twowheelsandme.wordpress.com/
