  • Solo India Trip: All the help I can get please...

    Hello everyone,

I can't believe I actually thought about what to name this thread, and this is all I could come up with.

First of all I'd like to introduce myself. I am new to touring, bought my bike on the 4th of March 2011 in Hyderabad. I believe I am 23 days old. I have done 2900km thus far. I was in the xBHP Munnar ISG2G recently, for the benefit of those who might go hmm?, I was the guy on the yellow ZMR. I learnt a lot from, I should say fellow bikers, and I thank you for making it a wonderful experience for me. Thank you. I still get really nervous and strangely excited referring to myself as a biker/tourer. Sorry for OT.

Coming back to the point, like I said, I am really new to this and ANY guidance from any of you would be more than welcome.

Right now I am in Vellore, will be done here in a couple of months. I was originally supposed to go to Tirupati from here and then on to Hyderabad. It became a Tirupati-Vishakhapatnam-Hyderabad trip, and before I know it, I am all excited and planning an around-India tour (that is what I'm calling it for now).

This is the route I am planning to take.

The points that are marked on the map are the places I am planning to halt for atleast a day or two for sight-seeing. I have tried to make the distances as even as possible. Every intermediate distance, I plan on making by starting at around 3 AM on a certain day and finishing it by 12 noon maximum, so that I don't have to drive in the heat.

I have/plan to procure all of the following gear.
LS2 Helmet, DSG Phoenix Jacket, A* SP-1 gloves, RJays Explorer II pants, Rjays Super-Magnetic Tankbag and Rjays Sports SaddleBags.

Plan to start the tour on the 3rd of May'11 if all goes well. From how much I have thought about it and planned, I should be in Bangalore by the 25-26th of May.

This is all I can think of right now. Update when I come up with something.

Suggestions/Criticisms/Opinions, basically anything that can help, anything you think that can help, anything at all is welcome.

More than anything, I guess I am looking for a word of encouragement. It would mean the world to me.

    Thank you in advance.

Congratulations on taking the first big step of making up your mind for an India trip! After you complete this it will become a part of your life till the end, and being the first one and solo - it will remain all that more special.

There are a lot of things to consider, especially the timing of it all. May will be hot, really hot. Being your first big ride that might not spoil things due to the excitement but it might not let you feel it the way you would have in cooler months.

Second, read up stuff on long distance riding, tips on braking (all available in the past issue of the xBhp magazine) and lots more right here The Art of Safe Riding

Also post up the route details with day wise breakup for people to see

You have worked it out quite well interms of timing to escape the heat but I wonder whether you will be able to start everyday at 3a.m and also by starting at 3a.m you will be missing a lot of vistas around. Although you are riding mainly on Golden Quadrilateral but still you will not do this ride everyday.

Is there a specific reason behind starting it in the month of May. I will say postpone it by 2 months and enjoy the trip in a much much better way.

Btw the spacing and the halts looks fine to me.

            Small Help

You Are Doing almost 80-90% of Golden Quadrilateral...
You Will be on the India's most excellent highways for most of time. So you dont need to worry much about yourself and your bike..
You will get Puncture wala's, Petrol Pumps often.

And you have ZMR so dont worry about reliability, but do check your Fuel injectors after every 1500Km....And you will definitely complete in 25 Days...
            And I am in Pune...

This is probably the best month. From here on, heat will increase and from June onwards, rains start making drives miserable and roads start cracking up. If it is only the drive that is important, then early morning starts of 3 am are the way to go, but if you also want to soak in the countryside well, adjust your start and close timings appropriately, between 6 am and 7 pm. Plan to stay only in hotels on the highways since all the cities are bypassed (except Delhi).

Good that you have made up your mind to do a solo all India. I totally agree with Sunny that your body takes a lot of strain during the summer months, especially in the north. Heat waves is another major factor to be considered(if at all there is any).My only suggestion is to give it a try in colder months.you would love the ride then. And also since your ZMR is only a month or so old,why do you want to give it more strain.I have no doubts about your machine or in you, but this was my small suggestion.Happy riding Ride safe

Thank you. I am still working on the breakups at each destination. The thing is, I am not really into planning and stuff. Just go with the flow. I just have a rough idea of how many nights I'll spend at each destination as of now.

I am sorry but I really need this to be my first solo ride. As it is my first, I want to feel everything that goes with a long tour, without having to share the responsibility or the joy/sorrow.

Like I've mentioned in the post, its not just the ride. I actually am finishing up with a long pending 'project' down in Vellore. In Tirupati, I am going to attend a cousin's marriage, then his reception in Vishakhapatnam. I need to meet someone in Delhi, then in Mumbai and Bangalore. The rest of the route just happened to fill in the gaps, literally. Kolkata is the only city that is out of the way, as I've never been there, decided to give it a go. Since the marriage is on May 4th, Can't really help the dates.

@Epic - I'm quite surprised (actually happy) to see Mr.Kumar here. He's THE BEST person who knows all the roads inside out on this entire country right from Leh to Point Calimere.

Anything more I say on route is an insult when Mr.Kumar is here Good luck on your trip, I'll try to be in Vellore to flag you off when you start. May is too long to go, but still.

Ah!!! One more thing, keep aside some time (call it a day or two) when your ZMA is due for service & draft a careful plan to reach those cities where ZMA can be serviced without loosing much on time.

Good luck bro, that's some serious mileage! You'll need to be on schedule to avoid the start of the monsoon, Belgaum on your last stretch gets quite heavy rains at the start (so I am told)

                      Enjoy!
Beware of Bread, don't say I didn't warn you!
More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

                        hi
all the best for ur trip. As a doctor( dentist actually) i can advice you stock up on ORS ( oral rehydration salt) the most popular one being 'electral'. coz all the heat is gonna suck up all the electrolytes from your body and make you feel exhausted. it will be available in even the smallest medical shop in the country. you can either make a one litre solution and keep on sipping it regularly or you also get this small sachets that make a 200ml solution. do let know ur estimated dates i mumbai.

Hey bro... Glad to see another pan-india ride coming up. I've one planned in August which covers most of the destination in your route too. Do complete this and put up a ride report
Wishing you all the best and enjoy the ride.

I'd just like to point out my bike is a ZM'R' not a ZMA. I've gone through the link Mr.Kumar posted earlier and it just too well documented. Wow. I'll have to go through it a bit more in detail, going to leave that for a little later though.
About the services, I've already thought about it. From the looks of it, the bike will be freshly serviced in Vellore when I start, and then there should be 2 services in Varanasi and Mumbai. As this tour is not about the time factor at all, I plan on keeping the dates wide open in case I change my mind about sticking to the GQ. Right now all I know is that I want to get going and go wherever the road takes me.

Its what I did on my last tour. Orange flavored ORS . Someone else had litre bottles of electral mixed with Glucon-D. It was quite good to taste too. I think that is what I am going to do this time. And snickers and RedBull along the way.

Thanks. I am not much of a blogger. Not sure how much of a ride report I'll be able to put up. I am not carrying a laptop, but was thinking if I have access to net cafes once in a while, I might update my status and such during the tour. Lets see.

This brings me to one of the primary reasons I put this thread up. I'd like to know about the different kind of electricals, the tubeless tire repair kit, wires and fuses and stuff that I should carry as precautionary measures. And links about how exactly to use them etc.

                            Thank you.
