  • South India Coastal Trip Plan

    Hello people

I am planning for a long ride. A really long one.

    Start Point : Pondicherry

    End Point : Hyderabad

    Bike Owned : GS150R

23400 km on ODO off which nearly 15k km was done on NHs SHs.

I have a DSG Phoenix Riding Jacket, Twister Riding gloves by Cramster, LS2 Helmet, Plain and tinted visors, Magnetic and saddle bags by cramster for now.

I have ordered Forclaz 500D boots, Duhan Riding pants and Tempest Gloves by Rjays from Adventure on the Rocks. The concerned person said the Pants and gloved are good in rain. Considering it will be pouring like nobody's business in the places I plan to go to.

Here's a link to the route map.

    Route map

    My plan is as follows:

Day 1 : Pondicherry To Rameswaram. Chill there, Go to temple and Rameswaram beach. Put my new DSLR to use.

Day 2 : Danushkodi beach and leave for kanyakumari to reach by sunset. And then go on to reach trivandrum same day.

Day 3 : Look around trivandrum, Kovalam, poovar. (open to suggestions)

Day 4 : Trivandrum to Kochi. it is just 206 km. Tell me if there are places worth visiting on the way. I dont mind reaching Kochi at night.

Day 5 : Look around Kochi

Day 6: Visit Noth paravur. Heard it is a place of historical significance and is beautiful.

Day 7 : Proceed to Wayanad with xbhp members for G2G.

    Day 8 : G2G

    Day 9: G2G

Day 10: Proceed to Mangalore (suggest places to visit please)

Day 11: Proceed to Sirsi and then Gokarna by night.

    Day 12: Gokarna

Day 13: Around Gokarna, Karwar Dandeli.

    Day 14: Reserve day

    Day 15: Reach Goa

    Day 16 : Goa

    Day 17: Reserve day

Day 18 : Proceed to Hyderabad.

    End Of tour

I am meeting relative in Hyderabad and proceeding to Yanam (small town near Kakinada) and then to Vishakapatnam. After which I will come back home to Pondicherry.

I want you guys to tell me if I will be able to manage to complete the tour in 18 days. I know it is going to rain like crazy. Since I am not covering major distances in a day except for 2 or 3 days, I should be able to manage i guess, with those reserve days.

Any suggestions about places unknown, genereally missed are welcome. I would love to see your inputs. Also please suggest cheap places to stay. All i need is a place to sleep and nothing more. May be a plug point :P

    Cheers.

Check my suggestion to Animeher or Animeher's trip to KL. It has good places suggested by most of us as well as the places he visited.

        206??? Lol Google is 101% wrong & I can vouch it. Kochi-Alapuzha-EKM is about 220+ Kms & takes 4-5 hours; Kochi-Kollam-Kottayam-EKM is about 240+ Kms & takes 5-6 hours.

Lots of places, but depends what you want to do & where you want to go. For eg, Alapuzha, Kumarkom backwaters or Vagamon enroute via Kottayam.

Without visiting backwaters, keep aside 6 hours of ride including breaks.

Let me also know if you make it to this place; I haven't visited anything significantly here.

From Wayanad to Managlore is it? Be prepared for bad roads. But still, can be done.

Mangalore to Gokarnam? Hmm...expect lots of bad roads & real bad roads. 4 hours Google is cent percent incorrect. Keep aside more time.

Did you forget Udipi, Kollur, Sringeri, Horanadu enroute? Riding through Agumbe ghats, especially during evening is something not to be missed.

Belur & ride to Belur from Hassan is something you should consider that should stay as a memory for lifetime.

EKM = Ernakulam? Isnt kochi in Ernakulam district?

I checked other places online and it says 210 odd everywhere. I will have to ask a few friends.

Change of plans. Thanks to you. I think I missed Udupi. I want to stick to the coast. Since I will be staying in Bangalore. Other places are kind of a weekend getaway.
          Thanks a Lot and Cheers

Ohh Boii..thats really a long one

But what I wud suggest that rather than just sticking to the coastal area if you target for visiting more scenic places, the ride will be more enjoyble.

There is a lot in Kerala to explore and you have skipped most of them

"When" are you going is the main question? Its gonna be raining like crazy in most places, more so along the coastal belt more so on the western seaboard not as much on the eastern side though. So my advice would be that you be prepared for that!

TVM-Kochi take MC road instead of NH46 to avoid heavy traffic!

Why Sirsi? Head to Gokarna direct spend a day there itself.

After Gokarna you can head directly to Dandeli not much to do in Karwar!

From Dandeli you could try one of the lesser used paths to enter Goa, but if its raining it will be in a very sorry state!

Goa to Hyd in a day will be a long haul, you might want to split it into two days!

I am planning to leave this friday or saturday. After putting some thought into it, I have decided to keep Goa aside for some other time. May be I should explore like Amit says I will put up a new plan with minor changes. Suggestions please.

wow bro... hell of ride its gonna be.. all the best. seeing you are quite prepared, I dont see any problems...

Look us up when you reach TVM.

Tvm to cochin is around 220 kms either way (NH or MC road) (@aargee - FYI too ). The NH47 is quite good now, and is the fastest. If you ride early in the morning, it can be done in as low as 3.5 hrs! Any other time, the traffic will be dampner and can take up to 5.5hrs. If taking the MC road, till Chengannur its good road. After than till Changanaserry, not so great, but fine (narrow and relatively pot-hole free, but uneven surface). From Changanaserry, take the road to Alapuzha (which is on the NH). The Changanaserry - Alapuzha route is quite scenic. Going via Kottayam will be horrible as the roads in and around Kottayam are bad bad bad... And yeah, via Kottayam, the distance will be around 240 like aargee said.

On places to see in TVM, drop a note in the TVM offline thread.. there are lots of guys out here waiting to get an excuse to ride somewhere. I guess you can hit Ponmudi in the morning(unless you are hell-bent on not visiting hilly areas , may serve as a break from the monotony of beaches ), visit Kovalam n nearby beaches by evening..

MC road route which I often take: http://bit.ly/tvm-mc-chn

instead Udupi You can try Murudeshwar. Looks like you wish visiting good arch temples. So Murudeshwar shiv temple might be of ur interest.

Sure you dont wanna see anything in Kanyakumari?

In Goa where are you planning to go?
Rest others have already told you.

After some thinking, I have decided to drop Goa since it is pointless going to Goa alone.

This would be the new route map

                        Route map

                        The new plan

Day 1 : Pondicherry - Rameswaram, reach rameswarm for lunch.

Day 2 : Dhanushkodi Beach early morning and then proceed to Trivandrum via Kanyakumari

Day 3 : Look Around Trivandrum

Day 4 : More looking around

Day 5: Proceed to Kochi via the route Lijok has suggested.

Day 6: Look around Kochi, Visit North Paravoor.

Day 7: Roam around Inside Kochi

Day 8: Proceed to Wayanad with xbhp folks

                        Day 9: Wayanad

Day 10: Proceed to Mangalore after Lunch/ Breakfast (depending on what xbhp folks suggest)

Day 11: Proceed to Chikamagalur and look around Chikamagalur.

Day 12: Visit Places around Chikamagalur, Shringeri, Hassan, Belur, Halebeedu

                        Day 13: Reserve Day

Day 14: Reach Gokarna, Visit Murudeshwara on the way.

                        Day 15: Gokarna

                        Day 16: More Gokarna

Day 17: Reach Dandeli via Karwar

Spend a day or two in Dandeli, Depends on whether epi.fail.engineer's riding down to Dandeli from Hyderabad.

                        Day 18: Reserve day

Day 19: Proceed to Hyderabad via Dharwad, Gooty.

                        Thanks for all your inputs.

I am expecting more suggestions to manage time.
                        All peace Bro. xD

MC Road? Let me know your actual time & date of travel. I've something for you depending on when you start.

Chikmagalur-Hassan-Belur-Halebidu can be done on a single stretch. You might reach Sringeri only by evening or even night.

Once again I stress, don't miss riding Agumbe ghats; add to that Manipal, which is just a few Kms from Udipi.

Not sure if you're making to Mangalore via Hassan/Chikmagalur, if so, then don't miss Dharmashala, the mistake I did last time.

And when you're making to Sringeri, give a try to Horanadu & Kudremukh, they're worth visiting.

And why're you missing Kollur Moogambiga temple? Also remember, roads are worst after Bhatkal, you can keep an average of 20-30 Kmph for hours + offroading experience.

If you like commercial kind of temples, then you can visit Murudeshwar.

                              Lijo cheatta, questions for you...

I'm confused!!! I said TVM-Alapuzha-EKM route is 220 Kms & TVM-Kottayam-EKM is 240 Kms. So, which two ways are 220 Kms either way?

News to me . So is that Alapuzha, Sherthala stretches patched up or laid down now? And what about Alapuzha during the rain? Wouldn't it be flooded like island?
