Day 2: Took MJ as the victim of riding exhaustion, day 3 was no less

Day 3: Joshimath – Govind Ghay – Gangaria: 20kms on bike and 16 kms on foot
I shall take up from when Shivanshu finished! Before that a few pictures towards Govind ghat,

A point to add in the hurry to leave to Govind Ghat we skipped looking for an ATM as I wanted to pick up cash (This was mistake no. 1)
This was the scenario, Shivanshu figures out that trekking is not his game and stops after catching hold of MJ (when Seema and I last met was leading the way) who was trying to take the short cut in the wrong direction! Here they exchange the luggage. In the mean while Seema and I had upped our pace to catch hold of MJ, after a couple of Kms figured out he was nowhere in sight and might be behind us so we waited for about 20mins for both Shiv and MJ! After that we concluded that both ain’t coming, as MJ was not really interested to come to VOF on end of the previous day and Shiv already had his lungs hanging off his mouth due to a habit he needs to Quit!
We sat at a shop and figured out what was that we had as cash reserve, Rs. 1100/- total!!! :-O But after a debate we decided we where 4 kms off Govind Ghat and we shall do what we had come to do, to see the VOF! To our surprise MJ caught up at around 5’o clock. What a relief! We sat and recalculated the cash in hand once again as Gangari has no ATM’s so we had Rs. 3100/- in toto. Ok now we had the confidence that we can survive! So carried on the trek and captured pics till it turned dark!

    Taking the short cut!

    As the lights where fading

The last of day 3’s Pics. The rest of the visual splendor has been explained in words below.

The initial trek up from govind ghat is flowed by the serene sould of the river making rapids in tango with the mountains. In the mean while we had people giving us looks as if we were mad people, I remember an elderly Sardar on the horse riding downhill called upon us to say that, we should consider taking a horse and that the route further up is not very safe and are known for the wild animals! Well we decided we knew better (Mistake No.2). As the day turned night so did the number of people we saw dropped. There was a point where it was 7pm completely dark when the paved path way disappears into thin air. We send MJ back to ask a Saint sitting by the pathway a few meters before! The answer was get off the pathway into the river bed, now I could recall the old Sardar on the horse. Well we did and found a couple of Sardars(youngsters) confused in the river bed as there was no path that we could figure in the night and worse they had no torch and we had one but a decent one! By the time figured out the way a few more buys joined us and the bad part is none of us had ever done this trek so we where 10 guys and a Girl in total darkness. The first place we find to get on to the original path we climb to find a few tents pitched in! but then again the pathway disappears back into the river then I could see why, LANDSLIDE! Even a pathway had a major landslide where the original rock cut path had disappeared into the river, we climb back down and a few hundred meters ahead we again find a path leading upwards, the same scenario few tents pitched in, but we find a good hearted local who comes out of his tent and shows us the route and Walla we find our way back into the rock cut path.
Now the trek was fairly simple and we decided to hang on to the group of guys as it made no sense to get lost alone. All of a sudden we find a set of five guys walking back at a frantic phase saying that there was no path further on and it was not possible to find the way another landslide has taken the path with it! Now the group decided we will see what can be done once we reach there. So we where 15 guys and a Girl in the pitch dark and 4 torches guiding us through the jungle, we reach the landslide area and all looking at directions to take, where we were saved by a Horse man with a couple of horses and a couple of guys sitting on it! So he points us the direction and moves on as he was making his way up to Gangari as well, but this guy was at a good phase so we were in no position to catch him. This was 9pm and the board still read 4kms to Gangaria our destination for the night.
Seema, Mj and I broke away from the gang as they were slowing down due to the luggage they were carrying. We sat at a point safe from animals and ate the last packet Borbone that was left as the rest we had munched on the way up at 9.30. This is where the real steep section starts off. I was personally starting to lose breadth but had to keep up as both MJ and Seema where pretty comfortable climbing. There was a point when I needed a break every 10 steps. The at 10.15pm the last of the boards show up saying 2 kms to Gagaria, at this point my lungs were starting to cry out loud and fatigue started to creep in and I was toiling for each step. Seema was feeling the fatigue creep in as I could see that her steps where no longer sure footed. The body weight was starting to get transferred to the walking stick which we had bought for Rs.15 each at Govin Ghat which proved to be a good investment. MJ who was fatigued by riding the previous day was having the last laughs(To be mentioned MJ was carrying the larger of the two bags which had the cloths of Seema and Mine for the past 6kms and I was carrying his bag which was prity small), as Seema and I were taking the toll of the climb, But we were still not broaken physically and mentally, at least not yet.
Alas, the board read 400mtrs Gangaria and the next step is a plain leading across a few beautiful tents and a clearing which gave out the magnificence of the mountains as the rain was by now constant and mild. WE took a break here for a few minutes right in the middle of a water stream as this was the only place that seemed safe as the last section was dense forest and we knew wild animals especially bears where common in this mountain.
I still remember these few minutes as if it was happening right now. We were sitting facing the wall of mountains, not too far to take away the magnanimity and not too near to spoil the view. It was just right; I could see the numerous waterfalls created by the rain as silver streaks on a moonless dark night, the mountains where a dark wall standing high against the cloudy grayish black sky! The vast plains ending into a river which had created a deep Gorge was all that separated us form this mountain. No matter what camera you had this was a view impossible to capture. Think of how nice this view should have been that my fatigued brain at that point could capture it so well I can still recall.
We got up to make the dash for the last 400 meters to our destination and alas my feet gave up. I was having a cramp the couple of years not visiting the gym was taking its toll, I was broken physically. Now MJ was showing off his physical stamina and I whole heartedly handed over my next bag for him to carry! Then it was slow progress cause for a change MJ had to sit every 10 steps now .
There was a small climb with a hell a lot of horses and even more Horse Dung to cross before Gangaria. We reached by 10.40pm and figured we got just 20mins to find our self a place to stay as lights go out at 11.00pm there!
We went straight to GMVNL’s guest house which has always been the best all across Uttara Khand, but we where turned down due to unavailability of rooms so we ran back to the start of Gagaria where we saw a new hotel, we entered, order food and the lights went out! We had da food sent to the room for Rs. 50/- extra for room service WE crashed for another day!!!!

From here on expenditure was sky high and we were running out of cash on day 4!

Sorry guys for being late in posting my side!! Just been busy in the office.

@Shivanshu, Rocky & Seema: Great work there friends! Wonderful picuters and amazing log. It's always a pleasure and a learning experience riding with you guys.

Well, though I've ridden earlier in the Himachal and so was quite confident about the Uttranchal. However, let me tell you that it was challenging when it comes to riding into the green mountains.

Me and Shiv has maintained a very good pace till Lansdowne (accompanied by Rocky in the way). My first visit to Lansdowne was totally wonderful with the beautiful landscape everywhere.

On the second day, we have to cover a long distance and both of our experience rider duo (Anna and Shiv) were planning to reach Joshimath by the end of day 2 itself. I was only kept on following them upto every extent. Things got bad when we started to get into rains and the slush afterwards. This slowed me down, as I wasn't feeling confidence enough to rip through these hills. Roads were narrow, steep falls on your left and slush and rain on the way were making me nervous.

Shiv and Rocky has to stop at every 20 - 30 kms. They waited for me and when they caught a glimpse of me, they ripped through. I was maintaing a pace decent enough to take myself alive to our destination. Well, since we were riding for quite a long (almost 10 - 12 hours), I need to eat as I started to black out because of hunger. Finally, we stopped at a dhaba, where people were astonished and amazed at where we are going, how we are going, when we are going, and the road through which we are going. I don't think I will criticize myself for my condition. I am leaving that part for Shiv and Rocky..

Well, it was decided there that we will go to Joshimath, without any long halt in between (Though I wasn't aware of any of these as I have lost my senses). It was almost 10:00 PM and the board was showing Joshimath = 113 km. We crossed few dangerous springs and slush patches in between. I am not very versed with the route guys so sorry as I do not know which all places we crossed. At one place, I asked Seema that where are we heading exactly? She said, "JOSHIMATH" and I said "okay" with a deep breath. Well somehow, I was able to pulled myself to Joshimath in one surviving piece by 2:30 AM.

The next morning, we headed for Govindghat. Clicked some beautiful pictures in between and reached by 1 or 1:30 PM. Left our bikes there and we all started for trekking to Valley Of Flowers.

I was leading this time as all were walking while I was like in my home in the rocky mountains. I don't mean to say that I was born Mowgly.. It's just anything involving physical activity excites me more than anything.

I started to treck upwards directly to the mountains, while others were following normal trek route. At one point, when I was waiting for others, I found Shiv. He was exhausted and determined to go back. "Smoking thrills but kills". Well, now the first and foremost objetive was to catch Seema and Rocky. They must have thought that either I have gone back or I am all the way to the Ghangharia.

I quickened up my pace, took every possible shortcut, jumped, ran and caught them within 35 - 40 minutes of leaving Shiv.
Rocky has already described about our journey from here to the hotel, so leaving it. The next day, we left the hotel and had wonderful breakfast. By 9 or 9:30 we left for Valley of Flowers.

Sorry guys! running short of time and a lot of work. I will update my part later. Over to you three...
      Cheers!!

@ Shiv: Wonderful log dost and as ususal amazing pics!

My turn for Valley of Flowers

So, we (Me, Rocky and Seema) started for Valley of flowers by 9 or 9:30. Rain was all the way. Started at a slower pace but as time passes by it was raining in the fifth gear and within the 6k - 9k RPM.

We moved ahead and crossed a beautiful spring fall on our way. Clicked some pictures, which will be uploaded by Rocky.

So, while we were entering the Valley of Flowers, it was almost 1 - 1:30 PM. The Ranger warned us to return by 5 PM as there was a certain danger of Grizzly bears.

I wanted to see one of them but with the weaklings with me, I thought "Better luck next time".

We passed through some very narrow lanes constructed between the forest with the river flowing at her full force on one side. I would say that I was experiencing the most beautiful natural beauty until this age.

Seema hurt herself at one place, when she slipped on a rock and Rocky fell upon her as he was standing just next to her. Fortunately, her effort was fruitless. She was hurt a little but nothing major.

We moved ahead and reached a small wooden bridge patched up with some tin and aluminium sheets. Underneath, the river was flowing at full flow. We saw some cute animals belonging to rodents category. They looked like a close relative to mongoose. They were quite swift and damn quick. Even though, I managed to cage one of those in the camera.

Furthermore, we crossed the bridge. It was raining since the begining of the day and this time it has gained a good pace.
Well, there were other tourists as well standing beneath a natural shelter made of stones to avoid rain and removing their hunger as well.

We joined them, emptied 3 packets of Bournville (eaten mostly by Rocky). Few moments passed when a forest ranger showed a red flag and announced that we need to return now as a landslide took place and road might get closed. We all rushed back towards the exit at a gentle pace. I forgot to mention that I got a knee cramp in left leg while jumping. It may be due to the kind of shoes that I was wearing. However, that slowed me down in downhill movement.

We reached the landslide scene where forest rangers were standing and helping tourists to pass through without any scratch.
Seema was almost hit by a stone while passing thorugh this area. However, the ranger saved her and slowly all of the tourist passed through it with the help of them.

And so on, trying to matching up with the pace of Ana and Seema; reached Ghangharia by 3:30 PM - 4:00 PM. Ana helped me a lot in the above strectch as it was difficult for me to move downhill with a jerk in the knee. Thanks buddy!!

As Ana has already mentioned in the previous logs that we were running short of finances, we took rest at a doodhwala bhaiya's shop to decide what to do next.

I went to contact Shiv through a 20 rs/min call rate phone service. No no, I'm not that rich neither I was worried about him. It was a satellite phone and there was no other communication medium. Ana also asked me to fix ourselves some mules/ponnies so that we can reach Govindghat in time (before night).

Well, there was some network error in the satellite phone. I moved ahead and asked a mule person for the rate. He said 700rs/person and I returned to Ana and Seema with mixed emotions..

Now Ana went out to try his luck and it worked. He somehow managed to get mules at 400rs/person which was our budget.
The doodhwala bhaiya treated us with Hot milk and free of cost gulabjamuns. I was really grateful to him and was wondering howcome any one can have negative thoughts about people so simple and eager to help.

Well, the most scary part was still left. The moment Ana gave up on his physical calibre and decided for mule riding, I was opposing him but to no avail. We sat on our respective mules and the moment it started walking my whole life flashed in my eyes within a minute. I cursed Ana as much as I can for two reasons -

1 - I have never done something like this before and never ever planning to do it again. I do not trust animals except Shiv and myself and this was a close relative to Ana in terms of IQ.

                      &

2 - "Main gadhe ki maut nahi marna chata tha"

I still remember that cunning smile on Ana's face when he said, " Dude! downhill riding is always my game". Since I cannot express myself as Seema was with us, I murmured, "Saale zinda nikalne de yahan se, game to teri main bajata hun"

I bribed God that I will sacrifice Ana if he'll deliver me safely to the Govindghat and found that it was too easy to bribe God instead of Government officials.

Well jokes apart guys, even the guy with the mules were very helpful and kind hearted. he was not taking money from us when he knew that we were running short of money. However, we managed to gave him what was already settled and exchanged good wishes.

We reached Govindghat and tried to contact Shivanshu as he has all the money. The phone was ringing and he didn't picked up. We finally called up GMVN at Joshimath and booked two rooms. The moment we were going towards the parking to took our bike, we found Shivanshu sitting on the door of a hotel; smoking and laughing at us.

Rest he has already explained to you. Stay tuned for more guys. We will keep it rich and amusing....

Well true the idea was mine to become a bit too adventurous to fall off the beaten path and take a pi with the raging river!!! The surface was polished by the ever running river and super slippery. It was the same situation of Rossi taking Stoner with him on a tight corner.. Seema slipped and took me alone right by da edge guess we were lucky not to fall right off into the river...

But still we posed getting up... ;-)

I remember the Look in MJ's face that day it was more like this

Well da decision was forced by me in many ways... As the situation was bleak we had enough money to stay but not for food and MJ had a Sprained Knee, it was 4.00 in the eve and no ways was i gonna do the same mistake of trekking in the night!

Man i know it dint go well with both... Seema was shocked beyond belief and hurt her self in the process... MJ was literally lifted off the horse by the horse men.

This picture marked the end of Valley of flowers Trek...

The Next day morning this is how i looked!!!!

Dude! I always did these things on these places. The only difference was the kind of shoes that I was wearing. Papa Emjay is quite notorious for his animal activities (except sex) since the school days.

So, that MONKEY JOB has nothing to do with my sprained knee. Huh!!
