Day 1 - Chennai to Kutrallam

Days before the Ride Start Day...

Discussions and SMS's were getting more frequent as the ride date was nearing. Collection of the riding members details and helping each other in getting and making sure the bikes are in proper shape for the ride all were taking place. No of members who are gonna ride this time was keep on changing as till last minute we had someone joining and someone opting out... so finally we are 8 of us starting from chennai and meet 2 from coimbatore. Also we had a quite a range of bike from 150's to 650cc and with a coverage of 600kms on Day 1, we decided to split the starting group into two. Me, Sriram, Pratheep, Nishant, Jaffar, Aravinth decided to start by 4.30 from chennai - while Sunny and Ananth will be starting by their own time say some 2hours after we start as thier crusing speed is 120+

        Day 1:

Alarm Rang by 3am and got a Good Morning message from Jaffar too, to make sure we are getting up , Plan was to me catch up with Nishant and ride to the starting point. With everything packed up last night - took a cold shower to refresh the senses and saddled up the bag on my FZ (been long since i toured on it so decided to ride on that) and rode down to meet up Nishant. Meanwhile got a message from Jaffer that he and Pratheep have reached the starting point. We soon reached there and by that time Aravinth has also joined by now. So we all were waiting for Sriram to join and within say 10 minutes or so - by 4.45 am he reached along with Aargee who was there to see us off and wished us a safe journey. With couple of pictures, we were all were ready to feed up our rides with some tarmac to munch. With some cool breeze through our mesh jackets we left the buzzing chennai behind and were heading towards Kutralam. After an hour of riding we took a break somewhere on the highway and started our journey back again. We were still wondering why Sriram bikes didnt give a trouble yet (on a lighter note) but we got the answer few minutes later when one by one the riders overtook sriram and when my turn came - checked with sriram - bike isn't ready to go beyond 80kmph so he stopped to fix that and pratheep decided to stay along and we left to stop after villupuram for breakfast by that time these 2 can catch up with us. From there on we were keep on riding and stopped after some toll to get some coffee and also to wait for others. soon sriram and partheep reached, by that time we completed our coffees, sriram worked on his bikes issue and we were ready to roll deciding the A2B near ulundurpettai as our breakfast stop. Nishant was leading and with his mind set at some 90 kms to cover the place, he kept on riding and we kept on following him and ended up crossing A2B. so we decided to stop at next town for breakfast, we doesn't want to ride into any town so we kept checking for any roadside motel for fodd and we found one. After reaching there, we informed Sriram and pratheep who were at A2B about our location and started gobbling some hot idlies, omelletes and poories . We gobbled up the food and quenching our thirst with water and cool drinks, we heard a grunt far away, we assumed that it should be the Ninja’s which started late and yes we were right - but a lorry was blocking the view on the road so by the time we rushed to wave hand Sunny crossed us and we were able to catch up Ananth who was trailing behind. Ananth gave the information that Sriram bike is again facing the issue, so they are coming up slowly. Soon sriram and pratheep reached us – took a short drinks break and we all were set to ride again. Ananth left first to catch up with sunny and wait somewhere ahead while we were on our usual riding formation. Subsequently after some kms, we saw Ananth waving hands in an service lane – where Sunny was also waiting. We parked our bike and had some cool drinks while others relaxed with some fags. After a relaxed break for 15 mins, we started our ride back – by this time Sun has come out and burning bright sending hot streaks over us.

        All packed up

        Ready to Roll

Meet up with Pratheep, Aravinth, Jaffar, Sriram at our meeting point

All set to begin the Ride

Tried to take Sunrise shot but P&S couldn't take

        Managed a decent one

        Breakfast Time

With open Highway in front of us - bright sun on top of us and no shade to take a break – we were eagerly looking out for a place to stop. Our front -runners, Sunny and ananth had found a lonely Busstop and we followed them for the our must needed break. After sometime only we realized that there is a A2B few metres away but no one ready to move there as all started to relax – fetched some water and cool drinks to put out the heat. After some good 20 minutes rest, we tried to check whether the coimbatore riders who decided to meet us at Thirumangalam and got back news that they will reach there soon. We started our bike to Thirumangalam, enroute we filled our tanks before we fill up our tummies. We reached Thirumangalam, but due to some confusion in the direction to the hotel, we ended roaming around the highway for some 10kms and finally found the hotel, filled up some food for time being as the food wasn’t great

        Gearing up after our break

        Catching up with the Ninja

        Open Highway

Bus stop which gave us the much needed shelter

After catching up with Karthik and Vijay, now we the group has become 10 and we started our ride to reach the destination. With more miles to cover up , we took only one break and were constantly focused on reaching our destination. We reached Kutralam around 7 pm and whole town in dark due to powercut (6 – 8 pm), luckily we had LED’s in the helmets which helped in following each of us without being getting lost in town. As we haven’t booked any rooms we first went to Tamilnadu Tourism guest house – the rooms were good but they doesn’t decent back-up power facility as we are expecting some 4 more hours of power, we skipped that place and finalized our stay in Heritage Resorts in Kutralam with 24*7 power back-up . The resort was set admist the Mango trees and we have own parking in front our Cottage . Everyone started to hit the bath for a much needed cold shower and then some chill beers to relax. While Sriram, Ananth, Pratheep and Jaffar decided to venture out to the nearby famour Parotta shop; rest of us decided to hang out in the living room and ordered dinner - We ended the long day after some chit-chats and discussion over different topics.

                        Day 2: Kutralam to Kovalam

After a sound sleep, the alarm rang in the morning 4am - yep the alarm which i kept last night to wake up early for the ride - forgot to set it off.. and luckily Jaffar and Ananth who were sharing the room didnt beat me up for that. Set it off and slept again , but got again somewhere around 6.30 i think... came out of the room to check out who else is awake - Vijay was there and with a Good Morning wish - i set out with my cam to capture the Sunrise. With some cloud formation the sunrise was beautiful and tried my best to capture through my cam lens. After capturing some decent shots, came down from terrace to realize that the cottage - the whole resort is amidst lots of trees and there was a good number of Mango trees next the cottage we stayed. Walk few metres from there, one can end up in the neatly maintained swimming pool with thick Mango trees on both the side . Strolled back to the cottage, cleaned my bike - meanwhile one by one everyone started to wake up... soon coffee/tea were ordered and some a morning chat session started on the places to see before we reach our destination for the day Kovalam . Since not much water in the falls, we tried to check out the Five falls - one of the attractions in Kutralam, since we have came kutralam - atleast one photo for the sake of memories you see . Soon one by one got refreshed and were gearing up themselves and their bikes - After a heavy dinner last night we skipped the breakfast and decided to have a lunch once we reach Kerala.

                        Cottage we stayed

                        Sunrise from the Terrace

Swimming Pool - amidst Mango trees either side

                        Spot the Bird

                        Morning Hustle for Coffee

All geared up and some customary snaps before we leave the resort, we headed to Five falls. Now since parking was a bit of a distance from the falls sunny decided not to leave his bike and come which made him caretaker of our bikes too.. Now the Five falls which i have seen in full force turned out to be a one fall now and not much crowd too.. After couple fo snaps we headed back to the parking, Heat was at his best by 11am itself which set the hunger buds for few of us. While Aravinth, Sriram, Ananth, Pratheep, Karthick and Vijay set out to the nearby motel for breakfast, me sunny, Jaffer and Nishant munched some Energy bars. Soon the breakfast group were back and we are heading towards our next destination Thenmala. We stopped after few kms where some of them filled up their tanks and pratheep tried to fix up his chain slackness. since from there on the Road to Kollam is only one direction without any detours, Karthik stayed back with him and we kept riding ahead. Being a Friday, Jaffar wants to say his Prayers and we were in hunt of a Mosque for him. Within 15kms or so we were in Kerala border, but still we didnt see a sight of Pratheep and Karthik so we decided to wait. Time was nearing to 1pm so we asked Jaffar to proceed ahead and find a mosque enroute to Thenmala or there is a mosque for sure in thenmala, while we would start once the other 2 reaches and wait for him at thenmala. 10 0r 15 minutes after Pratheep and Karthik arrive and we started our ride back, covered some 25 kms from there on with a single stop for Photo at the famous Bridge and reached Thenmala. Now it waiting time. Since the prayer gets over by 2pm, we waited for Jaffar near the mosque at Thenmala and doesn't want to miss him so we stopped by the roadside itself. Heat was at his best and the large trees gave us the much required shade. Local kids over there were fascinated by looking at us and the bikes, and the attraction turned the Green mean machine. With sunny knowing malayalam he had a little conversation with them and they were happy hearing from him, later they quickly climbed the 30 feet wall kind - very agile kids. We got some water and cool drinks to quench our thoarts and say by 2.30 or so Jaffer arrvied finaly . Now its our time to hunt for a place to have lunch, but first decided to check out the Thenmala Dam. When we reached there it was hot and leaving the bikes and walkin in the hot sun over the dam wasn't our choice with the riding gear. luckily there was a hotel sign which would cater us for lunch - when we reached there unfortunately they had only food to serve 5 people but we were 10 , checked with them for the any other hotel - and were suggested with one after 3kms, but that was too far a distance so the people who went out firt found a Kerala mess for food. They were literally happy to see the crowd and we were happy to have local cusine

                        Gearing up..

Kerala meals was tasty and our hunger buds were well satisfied and we ended up with ice-cream as a dessert J. We rolled up to the Bridge with the backdrop of the Thenmala dam, few photos and we were good to start our ride back again. After entering the Kerala, the weather had changed – with some 20 odd kms and taking a quick shower was spurted enough to make our mesh jackets wet… we stopped near a shop and rushed inside to get shelter form rain. After few minutes the rain stopped - it was unusually for Rains at this time of the month – but it was a pleasant welcome for us J. After that our ride was much pleasant and we soon reached Trivandrum and being evening hours, we were struck in traffic. With the help of a local person there we figured out the route to kovalam. One thing which we found irritating is that whenever we stop in the traffic signal, the police personal would cover over and ask questions like Are you racing? Don’t drive fast ? where you are from? . With answering all their questions we slowly confer out of traffic and reached Kovalam. We kept following Ananth who has booked the Sea view rooms, we came to the end of the road and after that is the beach and near that is our Resort but we can’t take our bikes there and Parking is also like a public parking – so we forgo the Sea view rooms.
Meanwhile, it was sunset time and we in the western side – so a sunset over the Arabian Sea is a must and with very less time to capture – Ananth managed a good set of pictures , while I got a couple of decent ones.

From there on our hunt for a decent hotel with ample parking our bikes started, luckily found one with few yards. Took a while before we negotiate for the room and finally settled down under Office-like cooling in our rooms . Usual routine all getting refreshed started meanwhile couple of us headed for getting some drinks for relaxing while Pratheep and jaffar left out to have dinner and get some snacks for us. After a much required cold shower – we ended up in one room for chit-chat session over chilled barley drink . As the discussions heated up, our tummies started to growl for dinner which we engulfed by strolling out to nearby mess and stuffed ourselves with the idiyappam, Chapathi’, fish fry, chicken Fry and other dishes . With a satisfied tummy we walked back to room to continue our discussions… All were discussing something, AC was cosy enough and I slowly dozed of to sleep while others were still talking…. So Day 2 ended in cool and cosy way
Beautiful iteration of the journey, Dinesh ji. Nice post-processing work too.

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

                            THE END
