Day 4: Bomdila - Tawang (The Slush fest)

Bomdila was much bigger than I expected it to be. Also what amazed us were the people, their outlook, dressing sense. It felt as if we were on a visit to some hill station from a western country. And boy are the Arunachali girls beautiful or what? We could hardly point a girl and say she is not beautiful or average looking. As expected it started raining very heavily which lasted for a couple of hours and the more it rained the fear of riding in slush gripped me. Yes that is the only kind of road where I don’t enjoy riding that much.

The total section of 130 odd kms from Dirang to Tawang is in bad shape. The heavy rains last night made our life even more difficult. With continuous slip and slide we could finally reach Sela Top by 1p.m. Since I was very much tensed because of all the slush I hardly stopped and clicked pictures on way to Sela but the sense of achievement was there that I reached without a single fall. It snowed hours back at Sela Pass and we had a lovely time there. The downhill ride was much simpler much to the relief of me. With multiple stoppages here and there we reached Tawang by 6.30p.m.

Even before we could finalise our stay in Tawang my vehicle died and couldn’t be started. My vehicle was suffering from battery issues even before the start of the ride which I thought got corrected during service but it was not. This definitely put a question mark on our further plan but then we couldn’t do anything at that time of the day so we thought let’s leave that for tomorrow.

re: Greetings from North East India - Through Arunachal and Assam

Day 5 & 6 - In Tawang and ride back to Dirang

Next day we spent most of the time at a mechanic place to find the source of the problem but to no avail. Finally the mechanic just charged my battery and put it back so that atleast it can started and can go to the next big town. Our original plan was to go to Bumla, Indo-China broder but as it was completely snowed out so the road was closed even for 4*4 vehicles. With whatever little time we had we visited some places in and around Tawang. Next morning we made a quick visit to Tawang monastery which is the largest monastery in India. The experience was wonderful but we would have loved to spend some more time seeing the lives of lamas closely.

As it was snowing for the last couple of days we knew that crossing Sela 2nd time will be even more difficult. At JGarh which is roughly 50km before Sela we realized that it is snowing very heavily around the Pass so we decided that we need to do this as soon as possible lest the pass gets closed due to heavy snowfall. Next 40kms it was the ride of our lifetime with heavy snowfall. Both of us haven’t seen such snowfall ever and riding the bike through this made it an altogether different experience. It was quite tough at many places with virtually zero grips on road and zero visibility ahead but we enjoyed it a lot but then one needs to be extremely lucky to experience something even close to that. After reaching Baisakhi which is just outside the snow line we congratulated ourselves for our achievement, it also made me conquer my biggest fear on road I,e slush and black ice. That moment I knew that in future heavy slush will not make me feel tensed even if I’m riding solo.

After all the heroics around Sela pass which took a lot of time and energy we had to stop at Dirang for the day. Dirang is a small place and has very limited options if you are thinking of eating outside and everything closes before 7p.m. Next day it was ride back to Tezpur to get the permits for the second leg of our journey to Arunachal.

                    Tawang Monastery from a distance

One fine morning you dream and get to see this view in Tawang

re: Greetings from North East India - Through Arunachal and Assam

Day 7 & 8 - On way to Tezpur, Assam

Next day it was ride back to Tezpur to get the permits for the second leg of our journey to Arunachal. It was a very pleasant ride with a visit to popular Nag Mandir temple at Tenga.

My bike’s problem resurfaced as soon as we reached Tezpur and it again refused to start which meant that the battery got drained in just two days. With the dhakka start we could make it to the nearest hotel. With problem resurfacing time and again in my bike I got completely unsure and we decided that we will give rest of Arunachal a skip as we won’t get any help in the parts that we are supposed to travel from here on. Also with just 5 days in my hand it was more sensible to utilize the days in discovering Assam after which I will proceed towards West Bengal.

Tezpur is the largest of the north bank towns of Assam beside the river Brahmaputra. At 3.015 km it has the longest road bridge across the Brahmaputra known as Kolia Bhomora Setu. The best part about the town is that it is quite clean and peaceful with a lot of water bodies. One can spend a good amount of time across the Brahmaputra or in Agnigarh Hill with views of Tezpur city, Brahmaputra and Kolia Bhomora Setu.

After spending a whole day at Tezpur for repairing my bike we could finally make a move for our next destination. Guys at Bajaj service station, Tezpur did a splendid job in finding the root cause of the problem and correcting it, I owe the rest of the ride to them. The service station is one of the better equipped with knowledgeable technicians and service facility. Now we will ride on the other side of Brahmaputra on NH 37 towards Sibsagar. This side is Assam is full of tourist destinations with places like Kaziranga, Majuli, Haflong and Sibsagar.

                                The town of Dirang

A small hamlet just after Dirang

Yes we came from that road

View from the Nag Mandir in Tenga

Very few places have tarmac like this

                                Colourful piegons

There is no road as you reach Bhalukpong

                                Sunset just after Bhalukpong

Sunset over the mighty Brahmaputra in Tezpur

                                DK at his best

One of the few shots where we are seen together
