  • The CBR goes touring: A day ride to Lansdowne, June 2011

So the week later I pulled out the CBR (call it Apollo), much to the surprise of the Old Lady, and took her for a short day ride. The day began at 4:30 am and ended at 10:30 pm. But this was the beginning of a wonderful companionship between Apollo and me!

                Vaibhav,

I was a little surprised that you didnt take the CBR in your wanderer ride, i may have been lost in the dates when you actually got it. Was telling my fellow bikers who know you pretty well that you have got the CBR and you would be planning a ride to the hills.

Sitting in the plains and taking many test rides on the CBR will be nothing compared to your report on the CBR's performance in the twisties.

The seat is pretty comfortable, or you can say my butt is well endowed after all its been through in the previous years, either way there was no sore. With proper riding gloves, there is little stress on the arms but without, the stress, especially post rounds of heavy breaking, is substantial on lower arms. No stress on wrists and back, as I am pretty tall so donot have to lean in.

The trails I rode upon, people would normally not even take their 4x4 behemoths! I came back with a cracked foot-rest panel and a bent swing-arm, not to forget the broken headlight mounts. The CBZ took it all. So you can image what would the CBR look like However, I would take it to Leh this year, lets see how it fares

Route taken: Delhi – Meerut –Khatauli Bypass - Bijnor – Kotdwar – Lensdowne – Tadkeshwar – Lensdowne – Kotdwar – Meerut – Delhi

The other gentleman keeping me company was Vikas Shokeen on his R-15. I reached his door step at 4 am and it took me 15 mins of clamorous outcry to finally awaken this fine gentleman from the dungeons of his sleep. The door was open, so scaled the walls of his house, and barged in! It took another 15 mins for us to finally hit the road!

Pretty soon afterwards, a heavy downpour drenched me to the core. The road soon turned muddy and pothole laced. Apollo was following the Old Lady’s foot-steps and was trying to outperform, just to impress me! But this is not a bike for mud, no siree! On wet surfaces, the rear tyre is a big disappointment. Ought to be changed if you are fond of riding in the rains. A stickier rubber is the call of the hour!

A little while later, the rain subsided. And I opened the throttle. The bike had 1150 kms on the odo so I guess I was safe enough to burst at times. The bike reached 120 in no time. I went upto 130 and released as I ran out of road. There was slow progress from 120-130. But it was fun. I could feel that there was more juice left. Anyways, I crossed Meerut and waited for Vikas. We took the Khatauli bypass to Mawana and then further to Bijnore. En-route we met up with the Nitin, Sherry, Zayn and the rest of their group. They were also on their way to Lansdowne for a weekend ride whereas we had to return the same day itself. So after sharing a few pleasantries, we head off on our way.

Reached Kotdwar and then the fun began! The bike just pulls and pulls on the ascent. Transitioning from the CBZ, this was a big surge for me. I did not need to up-shift owing to the good amount of torque spread across the low and mid range. Life felt good again!

However the weight, that we have discussed time and again, those 150 odd kilos, is felt on the twisties. A certain amount of skill is required to handle this bike on corners. That’s because to lean it in, you have to literally throw it into a corner. It’s not one of those flick-of-a-wrist turners. It feels big and heavy. But once you get the hang of it, there’s nothing better! Trust me.

Coming back to the story, we stopped some 20 kms before Lansdowne and had some tea and Maggi. It had begun to rain. Hot tea and maggi, on a hillock amidst rains -> Blissful!

Zayn and gang pulled up an hour later, soaking wet. We all took shelter under the shack for some more time. Finally after like 1.5 hours spent there, me and Vikas made our way to Lansdowne. It was our first time to Lansdowne and frankly speaking I was left spell bound by the density of flora and the vivid colors on display. My speed had reduced as the surface was wet, but still we managed to pull into Lansdowne by 11:30.

                            Jai ho, Vikas Shokeen!
