Day 2: Darbhanga to Siliguri NH57/SH63

Within a couple of minutes from here we hit the highway, NH57 it was and it was a treat with very less traffic and since its elevated for most part of it there was not much disturbance or distractions. Within an hour we stopped for breakfast! Had some parathas and the famous special tea of bihar to refresh ourselves.. It was a lovely morning.. And me moved on..

Few kms of well laid roads and suddenly at a distance we see the road disappearing and all we could see was mud ! some dry, some wet and I was not happy to see that.. Patted my baby on her tank promising her that it would be worth the pain and moved ahead with caution! Ambar on his sirac street was the happiest guy on that highway.. I could see it with the way he just enjoyed manoeuvring through that dirt ! We experienced around 3 to 4 such patches which were under construction and there was no other way out than to go through them.. Following the trails made by the truckers we safely and slowly steamed through... Once I had to literally stop and rebalance as I forgot I was following Ambar and if I tried to match his speed any further I would be kissing the dirt and cursing myself!

So Atul went off to chase him down while I inspected the under belly part and was happy to see a negligible scratch due to that speed breaker! Told Ajay to carry on while I will take my liner off, get comfortable and catch up soon..

While I was catching up with the rest of the group I noticed my Odo showing 1600+, seeing which I got wings ..assessed the road and traffic I revved up and went past the 6k mark for the first time .. Stable as a rock and I felt great ! By the time I touched 160kmph I saw the rest of the riders ahead of me.. A butt break to follow..

Reached Siliguri and it was already dark! Decision time: Stay overnight at Siliguri or continue towards Darjeeling ? Enquired about the route and other details from locals in there.. People out there on an average advised us against riding to Darjeeling during dark. Threats were including gangs looting tourists enroute etc. So we took up this conversation over a cup of hot tea..

              Day 2 Cont.

...............So we took up this conversation over a cup of hot tea..

We decided to go ahead.. I had a couple of swiss knives with me so I handed one to Ajay and we decided that no matter what roads or conditions all 4 will stick together for the whole leg and no stopping midway unless its an emergency!

Took a much needed break near a government tourist lodge.. came to know we still had another 30 odd kms to cover before we can reach the main town! It was almost 10:30 pm by the time we reached the town.. not even dogs were to be seen anywhere in sight ! a couple of people here and there guided us towards the hotels.. We found a paid parking space which was in a basement.. requested the care taker to allow our bikes since it was mainly for 4 wheelers. Once agreed upon, Atul and myself went ahead in search of a suitable hotel to stay for the night.. The ones we wanted to stay in, including the ones advised by the few people who guided us, were full :X ..

This entire leg was during the dark so no pictures for this update !

Day 3: Darjeeling to Jaigaon. When we touch the Border!

Route taken: Darjeeling - Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary - Mal Bazar - Debpara Tea Gardens - Bipara - Hasimara - Jaigaon

Needless to say I kept sleeping.. It was a cold shivering night!! The blankets provided were good for nothing Atul and Ajay strolled around the small town in the morning.. They were back by the time I woke up.. Discussion began with the Hotel manager regarding the route ahead and the procedures regarding entry to Bhutan.. He gave us the wrong guidance regarding entry during the dark which, by the way he was talking, sounded like the illegal way! We did not entertain that and decided to go ahead till Siliguri and take it from there!

Some Clicks from the Morning walk:

There was nothing as such to see in Darjeeling. Or nothing that attracted our attention, except for those mini trains which steam around the hills ! I was fascinated.. We took our first stop near the train station to click some! Again.. not much to click hence Mr. Canon was not really interested to pop out from his bag.

We met a couple of taxi drivers at the spot. Re-confirmed the directions, making sure we do not go back via the same route which we took while climbing up the hills. Geared up and moved on!

                      The Nature's call :

Few kms of hustle bustle and the dense greenery welcomed us with arms wide open. J The freshness in the air mixed with the chill of a winter morning! The scenic beauty was at its best. The feeling was immense and the excitement was creeping in as we moved on little by little towards our destination.

Next pit stop was at a place called Lamahatta. As you can see in the map below, this place had a couple of water bodies or lakes we can say, view points, meditation points and lot more to offer.

Allow the pictures to speak for themselves for a while now:

                      Some pictures from our breaks:

                      Ready for some teamwork?

                      We pose

                      And they pose

On few occasions with long stretches of tempting roads alongside the river Teesta we spilt into groups of 2 with Atul and myself zooming past at high speeds, while Ajay and Ambar followed up at their safe speeds. At our next stop where we tanked up and enjoyed some hot tea and snacks, we enquired from few truckers regarding the possibility for us to make it all the way to Jaigaon if the roads were fine i.e. The reply was positive. 3 hours was the time they took to reach Jaigaon via their trucks. They also mentioned about a small stretch of bad road near Hasimara.

                      To be continued...
