    The Great Karnataka Roadtrip
    10th July – 21st July, 2012

Year in and year out, road trips have been a constant factor in my timeline for the past 2 years. Having done a 7 day long road trip across the western Ghats of Karnataka the past year, and smaller, day or two long trips over the past year, the itch to do a longer, bigger road trip just had to be scratched. And that gave birth to the idea of touring Karnataka on 2 wheels. 2 riders. 2 rides. 13 days, all over the state, 2200km of roads. That was what it turned out to be, along with excitement, and fun added to the basket.
    The route map

    Day 1: Bangalore-Shimoga-Sagar: 372km

Starting sharply at 6am, and catching up with my fellow rider, we did the first 70km to Tumkur and gave a stop for a quick breakfast. Yummy dosas filled our stomach, and we were back on the road. We still hadn't got saddlebags or other convenient means to carry our load for the next 13 days, and instead were using backpacks. 80Ltr ones! We were a sight to everyone on the road, thanks to the huge, and I mean HUGE backpacks.

The state highway from Tumkur to Shimoga is really good, with some small bumps and potholes as you near a small town or village, but other than those, it's a breeze, and we made good time, covering 200km in under 5 hours, stopping for photography and hydration breaks on the way.

A quick lunch at Shimoga, and we went off to visit the Upper Tunga Project Dam which was about 10km away from Shimoga. There was nothing worthwhile there, and after clicking a few pictures, we were back in Shimoga, and it was about 4pm.

With another 2 hours of good daylight left, we rode to the little town of Sagar. The 2 lane state highway is fantastic for most part, with good curves, green tunnels and good greenery on either sides. A little rain, sunshine, and photography stops later, we were in Sagar by 5.30pm. We got a room for a rather good price and settled for the night.

Day 2: Sagar -Jog falls: 260km (although it's only a distance of 25km!)

Starting at 6am, we got extra petrol (6ltrs) in our jerry can, and a 1ltr can. The actual plan was to go to Sigandur, take the ferry across the river, head to Jog falls which was about 70km from there, and ride further to Dandeli, about 200km from Jog Falls. What happened was a whole different story.

Sigandur is about 30km from Sagar, and the route winds thru quiet countryside roads, and with a stop for breakfast, and photography (lots of places, we didn't know where to stop, and where not to stop!) we reached Sigandur by 8.30. The ferry crossing takes about 15-20 minutes, and costs about 6 bucks for a 2 wheeler. And there, it was the same story of explaining to everyone about our ride, as they were curious about the big bags we carried. Everyone advised us to head back to Sagar and go to Jog, but we persisted in our actual plan which as it turned out, was not a very good choice.Click image for larger version

Back on the road by 9.30, after the first few km, the road became pothole and pebble laden, and we struggled riding thru those roads, thanks to the backpacks which used to sway sideways, and gave us some shoulder aches. 30Km in an hour. Uff!... And then, a villager told us that the bridge ahead had collapsed, and we had to turn back. Our option was to either go back to Sigandur, or go to Bhatkal which was on the coast, continue to Honavar, and go to Jog, all in 90km (as per the informant) We chose the latter option, and the 90km became a 180km ride! It was 90km to Bhatkal, another 30 to Honavar, and 60 to Jog falls from there. Weary and tired after riding in the rain for some 30km, and again threatened by imminent rain in the evening, we reached Jog by 6pm, got a room, hung out all our wet clothes to dry, and crashed (into the bed).
The plus point of this day was riding thru the fog via Kodachadri Ghats for about 20-30km en route to Bhatkal. But bad roads, crater like potholes, and a constant rain were really bad additions which we could've done without.

      Ecstasy!

Waking up early in the morning, by 5, we went to visit the famous Jog falls, only 5 km away. The point of leaving that early was to actually get time for photography before tourists dropped in. After a cup of hot tea, we headed on the road to Jog, and as sun came up by 6 am, we started clicking. Also, there is a zigzag flight of steps leading down to the water. Climbing down was okay, climbing up, not so much.

After getting some good snaps of the waterfalls (water flow was less, in spite of the rainy season) we started climbing back up. Boy, it was a pain. Bathed in sweat, and a 1000 steps later, we were back on top and on the bikes and back to our lodgings.

After a quick cold water bath, we were ready to hit the road, when the rain started. It was bright sunshine just 30 minutes earlier, and it was overcast and rainy now. The rain subsided within 30 minutes, and by 12pm, we were back on the road, riding to Dandeli.

60km later, stopping @ Sira for a refuel, the FZ had a nail stuck in the rear tyre (the usual!). After removing it, and filling air at the petrol pump, the 120km stretch to Dandeli was done at a leisurely pace, with lots of stops for photographs and a stop for shelter from the rain, hydration, and just to take a moment to stretch our legs.

The air grew cooler and the countryside grew greener, as we rode into Dandeli, and had to wait for about an hour for our friend to come and pick us up. Avinash, the friend was our host for the night and the next day. The rest of the night was spent in exchanging stories about our trip so far, and some general banter.

Day 4: In and around Dandeli: 100km

Starting by 8am, and after breakfast, the first destination was psych point, about 15km away from the town. The rear tyre of the FZ was leaking air again, and it was another puncture (No surprise, this one) after getting it fixed, we were well on our way and after some bad roads and vicious street dogs later, we stopped in front of a big barrier across the road. Psych Point was off limits, as there was a hydroelectric station next to it! The security guard however suggested we come in the evening when the place would be closed, to which we acquiesced.

From that place, Syntheri Rocks was the next destination, about 60km or so, and we reached the place in about 2 hours, with stops for photography in between. The last 2km to the rocks is thru a dirt track inside a forest, and a lot of langurs did we see. The rocks are a fine spectacle, and a couple of photos, and a break later, we started off, and the mud road was slushy, thanks to rains, and riding uphill was a difficult task. The FZ pulled it off with ease, thanks to the huge rear. The Apache struggled, so much that I had to push it up the slope.

From the rocks, we were off to visit Moulangi caves, which didn't happen, thanks to sudden downpour which left us soaking wet and cold and hungry. And Moulangi didn't have any place to eat, and strangely, the minute we stopped, the rain stopped too. Curses!

Back on the road again, bright sunshine all the way, we rode past the backwaters of Ganeshgudi dam to the dam itself, and here, the FZ ran dry, and I had to take petrol out of the Apache to help me ride further. Ganeshgudi dam, and another 40km later, we were back in Dandeli town, where we refuelled, and started again for Psych point. The time was 5pm. With couple of photo breaks, as well as a break to pee, and to eat, we reached the security gate at 6.05pm, and a different security guard looked at us in disdain and told us that visiting hours was till 6pm only. All pleading was to no avail, and we resigned to our fate and rode back slowly, as the weather got cooler, and the sun started to go down in the west.

                Days 5,6 and 7

                Day 5: Dandeli-Palolem, Goa: 132km

Starting early at 5 am, we left Dandeli, bidding adieu to our hosts. We had slept late the previous night, as the huge backpack required much packing, and had got only 4 hours of sleep. Finding the right route was a bit difficult, as signs were non-existent, and hardly any people up and about. We stumbled upon the right route however, and it was about 30km to Anshi Tiger Reserve, and we covered 25km of that before 6am. The last 5km were a nightmare. Loose pebbles and stones and what not made up the road. The tarmac was non existent, and with a thousand bumps, humps, curses, groaning and what not, we made it to the entrance of the reserve by 7am. All the energy we had was completely depleted in that last 5 km.

Once we were inside the reserve, the roads were as good as it could get, and we made good time, enjoying nature, clicking away when it pleased the eye, and with a cheerful mood, we reached Palolem, Goa by 10am.

The very first thing that made us like Goa!!!

A bath, a bad breakfast choice, and a headache made us crash in our room till about 3 in the afternoon. Visiting the beach, taking a boat ride, clicking and more clicking later, the sun set, and we retraced our way back to our lodgings which was a couple of 100mts from the beach. A hearty dinner later, and some late night fun (beer, movies on laptop, for the suspicious ones) we slept well.

                Day 6: Palolem, Goa-Gokarna: 100km

Starting late and a leisure pace later, we were back in Karnataka, but not before we had filled up our tanks, as well as the extra petrol containers (we had used them up in the last 2 days), we reached Karwar, took some photos, and after a brief visit to a “ship museum”, we were back on the road to our destination: Gokarna.

20km off the highway on the right, and we were at Om beach, Gokarna by 1pm, in time for lunch. After getting a room by the beach, we had a hearty lunch, and walking on the beach and doing some photography, we walked around to Kudle beach, which was much quieter and peaceful, compared to Om beach. Returning to our room as the sun was setting; the rest of the night was spent with music, beer and some useful and nostalgic banter.

                Day 7: Gokarna-Udupi: 260km

A wet start marked the beginning of the day. But as we took the exit to the highway, the rain stopped, and the sun came out in all its glory. Stopping for breakfast at Honavar, we deviated off the highway to visit Murudeshwara where there is a huge statue of Lord Shiva by the beach itself. That done, and with nothing else of interest on the highway, we reached Udupi by around 4pm.

A cold water bath, a visit to the famous Udupi Sri Krishna Temple, and a small walk around the town completed our day.

                        Days 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12

                        Day 8: Udupi-Mangalore: 60km

This day was originally meant to be spent in Udupi visiting the famous St. Mary's Island. But to our dismay, we got to know that the ferry to the island was stopped for the rainy season. With no other purpose to staying in Udupi, we packed our bags, and headed to the coastal town of Mangalore. The highway was under renovation for most part, and we had to take frequent detours. Also, some rev happy fools on a Bajaj pulsar tried to trigger our racing instinct which we calmly held under restraint.

After dumping our luggage, we visited a nearby mall, and for lack of options (aka boredom) we spent roaming around the mall for almost 2 hours. Lunch at KFC and more looking around later, we headed back to our room, and after a power nap of 2 hours, we came back to the mall again by 8pm to watch the night show of 'The Amazing Spider Man'. 12.30am, and we were outside our hotel, knocking on the front door which didn't open. 20 minutes later, the door opened, and we headed back to our room and slept the sleep of the dead.

                        Day 9: Mangalore-Madikeri: 150km

Starting early by around 7am, we had what we thought was supposed to be a easy ride ahead of us. However, nature had other plans. Exiting Mangalore, we had to go via two small villages Puttur and Sulya. Hardly 15-20km from Mangalore, the sky grew overcast, and we had to make a quick stop to get the rain cover on the bags, and as we started, a drizzle started. And added to that, the roads grew worse, and there were quite a few water logged pothole stretches. We did all that, and more, and then the rain came. A bit of soaking in the rain, we got a bus shelter and we took shelter from the elements. The bikes got as wet as they possibly could in the half hour that we waited for the rain to abate.

The rains reduced, but the road condition just went from bad to worse. Potholes, bumps, water logged stretches and what not, it was a slow ride till the Coorg border. Once Coorg started, there is a really good 2 lane state highway, and we made a good, but slow pace. After the rains, the road was fully wet, and as we ascended, the fog set in, and progress was relatively slow. Also, a sharp cold set in, and fingers pained every time the clutch or the brake had to be operated.

Riding slow for the last 60km, we reached Madikeri by around 1 in the afternoon, checked into a room, and kept all our gear for drying, and grabbed a quick lunch. Madikeri was cold, as cold as it could get in the rainy season, and there was always a continuous drizzle. By 3.30 pm, we set out to visit Abby falls and Mandalpatti hill station.

Abby falls done, and a quick ride up the hills, we arrived at the road to Mandalpatti. It was a narrow stone track, water track, and a bit of tarmac thrown here and there. After a while, the road was just a heap of slush criss-crossed by jeep tyre tracks. We got thru two of these things, but the third was all but impenetrable. Or we probably could have done that stretch, but as we didn't want to get our shoes wet or muddy (drying them would have been a pain later), we didn't attempt to negotiate that stretch. Leaving the bikes there, we walked, till the peak, in dense fog. Not another soul did we meet.

By 6, we started walking back to our rides, and then, we made our way back to town. The rest of the evening was spent sitting in the bus station over some chips and banter.

Day 10: In and around Madikeri: 100km

A leisure start marked the start of the ride. We visited the Tibetan colony at Kushalnagar, made a quick run to Dubare Elephant Camp, where we unwinded ourselves and had fun with river rafting over the rapids. At one point, the raft stopped, and we dived into the water. I had a sensation of going really deep into the water, and just floating back up. The life jacket was the bonus

Swimming in the water alongside the raft, we had lots of fun. More rafting later, we headed back from Dubare, and back to our room. About 3 km from town, the FZ ran out of petrol. Again!... Parking it well off the highway, we got back to our room, where we took the spare petrol container and refuelled the FZ.

The entire day was fully bright and sunny, and not a drop of rain did we encounter. The evening was spent at Raja seat overlooking the entire area of Madikeri. The road which we had taken the previous day seemed like a huge snake as it twisted and turned around the hills. The peace was shattered by a noisy group of 10 or so boys who started putting loud music and shouted and danced like maniacs. Tourists. Disgusting ones at that. :x
