  • Yamaha Riders Club - Annual Ride 2012 (Goa)

It all started here at xbhp.com

I am a member of xbhp.com since 2004, reading through threads, joining rides in Bangalore and learning a lot off the forum. Then I moved to cars but the thirst for the 2 wheels just did not get over me. Getting back to bikes was the call of the hour. It had to be an Yamaha and R15 looked okay. Later I realized, it was way more than 'okay'. I was back in Bangalore and I could see none of the old riders in Bangalore. Time to form a new group and start riding. How about riding with other riders who share the similar sentiment towards Yamaha bikes ? In came the call for Yamaha riders for a quick ride to Yelagiri to strangers, or were they. Early morning at 0600 hrs I reached and was surprised to see another R15 v2.0 parked with a guy called bobbing his head to the tunes of his iPhone. Rayhan. Couple of minutes and we were joined by Suraj, TJ, Sachin and Daytona. Asking for whereabouts, finally came Ron on a Yamaha R15 v2.0 50th Anniversary edition. Yes, we had 7 R15s v2.0s lined up and in no time there were no strangers. Helmets on and we headed towards Yelagiri. We rode for sometime after which we started flying low. New group and ripping out was the way to say hello to each other. Ripping but in a sane manner, or was it.

On the way we caught up with SurajB who came in on a R15 v2.0 Sunset Red. Yep, so that was 8 R15 v2.0s lined up and riding their way to Yelagiri. Coincidence ? Talking, riding, food, good curves to bend on and good straights to rip on. Time to form in a group. In came Yamaha Riders Club. We thought a lot if we should make it Bangalore specific or India. Why just restrict the fun to us and hence started Yamaha Riders Club - India. Objective was to get Yamaha riders together and just ride along. No major hue and cry over it and off we started. What started with a small group to ride together is now extended to Bangalore, Pune and Chennai. 19 Rides covering some 30K cumulative kms covered supported by around 50+ unique riders each understanding the importance of riding gears and enjoying riding as much as we do. The group grew and so grew the awareness of riding jackets, knee guards, gloves etc. It was a pleasure to see riders growing up to more sensible ones while having the fun of riding. We started thinking beyond rides too as we printed T-Shirts, Stickers, Visiting Cards and a web site which is still under construction.

But while all this was happening, there was one thing that was running along our head since the first ride, RIDE TO GOA. We were sure that it had to happen but when, where to and how to plan up came in gradually. And here we are just 6 days to our official Annual ride to Goa. We would be joined by riders from Bangalore, Mangalore, Pune and Goa.

What happens next is updates that will be coming from various riders who are participating in this thread as their perspective of the ride.

Dates were the first thing that we started deciding upon. December, too expensive. October, too early and it could be rains all over. 25Nov2012. Pricing advantage of off seasons and weather advantage of peak. So be it. 25Nov2012 will be ride day where we will ride around Goa.

We started with Hotel booking catching up with local travel agents and all. Prices did not look good and places looked even worse. We realized that looking around the whole of Goa is not going to be easy. We have to decide on a beach first. Palolem became our choice since it was not as commercialized as the rest of the beaches yet. Tagged as the Paradise of Goa, we stuck with Palolem.

We sat with this happy thought of Palolem for a while when we realized that it's high time we need to book. Agents took a back seat and in came Agoda. We booked hotels within our 2-3K INR/night budget. Hotels booked, it was time for the route. Google Maps became our best friend for this and we kept dwelling about the various option and finally decided on this one. One moment, are we not YRC - 'India' ?? Time to announce about the ride in our FB page. In came a lot of 'Joins' but we had no clue who and will they join.

Anyway, we continued with the plans. Off the first 8, only 3 were available for this ride while we had new companions. New friends who were all eager to ride and have a good weekend in Goa. Few more rides and we got in touch with Dempsy and with him began the Mangalore group of riders who will be riding from Mangalore to Goa. It was good to know that my age old friend from xbhp, Meghan would also join the ride. 2 routes were decided and things were set for Goa.

Ride around Goa sounds good but what makes it better is you having a local companion giving you company and being the host for the event. In came GEARS. While searching a bit about Goa I bumped across this group and realized this was the group we should be riding with in Goa. With an apprehension of a response, we dropped a message to the page admin and in came the reply with an affirmative. Akshay from GEARS came into my regular chat list of FB planning the whole thing. Well to be frank, to much of planning also spoils the broth and hence a lot has been kept on how we decide on D day.

And we thought all was set when we started reading and following this event called India Bike Week. It's an event supported by 70 Event Media group and Fox Traveller. They are introducing an event in the Indian biking calendar that all bikers in India wished for and here it is. A common platform for bikers of all kinds to meet and share the common interest of biking. Biker Build Off, Bike Show case, Rock Show, Flee Market, Stunt Arena; yep it's all there. The event is on 2-3 Feb 2013 while we have our event in Nov. So close yet so far. Well who knows, we might jump in again. While we were admiring this event, we got a call from one of the organizers saying that they wanted to meet us in our Ride to Goa and partner with us for this event. Was I hearing this or is this is really happening. Few quick calls and we were in for a party meeting the team on 24Nov2012 at some shack in Goa which we are yet to decide upon. The party is ON.

Last moment meets and we are set with the route, the riding sub groups, the things to carry list but there was something that is still hitting my head.

Can I got for the ride ? Will I be able to join ?

The Bangalore wing of YRC - India keeps riding here and there and 10Nov2012 we rode to a water body called Chunchi Falls. Long story short, I got down into the water body and my first step was on a broken beer bottle. Ended up with 5 stitches and 2 weeks of working from home. The trip that we were planning from months suddenly looked like a dream to me instead of reality. I did not have the heart to cancel any of the hotel bookings with the slight hope that the Doctor might just say, carry on; it's all good to go. I will loose all the money but it's the hope which is keeping things on.

The gypsy in Goa is all set as a back up vehicle if I am able to join in, the hotels are booked, the route is set; The ride is ON.

            Hello Riders
As abhi has already told the things needed to know, let me carry on a little as to what is happening presently.

YRCIndia - Goa Ride. Through my eyes. (will be writing like this for the first time, so please excuse me for any mistakes)

Abhishek : “guys GEARS will be riding with us in goa
            Ron: “wow cool!!”
            Teejayy: “awesome!!”

This was 4 weeks before the actual ride date to GOA. Yes, finally plans were up and running for the dream ride for the YRC guys. Hotels booked, amidst loads of guys pulling out of the ride because of personal issues and even professional, as we were getting closer to the ride. At one point the list from bangalore was 15 riders which came down to 5 riders. Plans were perfect but time was proving to be imperfect. Finally 8 guys from bangalore were confirmed, but only 7 will be riding. WHY? Read on for that “WHY”.

            10th Nov 2012.
            YRC rides to mekedatu.
Abhi: “guys I stepped on a broken beer bottle while getting into water, now at hospital getting stitches done. Have been advised for bed rest for 10 days!”
            Ron: “waaaaaaat ?!?@#%^%$^%&”
And then it was TJ’s turn to say the same...
            Tj: “waaaaaat ?!?#$@#%”

At YRC, situations like these are called “Oopsiee situations”

And this was one of the major hurdles we came across apart from late hotel bookings, flights cost rising up, few guys pulling out of the ride, bikes getting stolen {mine and Saquib's} and so on.

            16th Nov 2012.

Abhi: “guys IBW has invited us for their party on 24th in goa, along with GEARS and also wants us to partner with them for IBW”
            Ron: “whoooo whoooooo suppa cool”
            Tj: “Awesome”

            18th Nov 2012.

Finally 7 guys from the Bangalore wing YRC and 5 more from mangalore were up for it. We all met up at Abhi’s place to decide the time, meet-up place, places to stop for breakfast and lunch, carrying puncture kits, first aid kits etc.
            The Riders and their Rides.

            Tejas a.k.a teejayy on R15 V2

            Ronnie a.k.a Ronsyl on R15 V2
            Suhas aka Rocky on Fz16
            Saquib on R15 V2
            Prakyath on R15 V2
            Prajwal on R15 V2
            Dhritul on Fz16

There are R15V1, Gladiator's also riding along from mangalore group.

These were guys riding from bangalore. 2 more guys were joining but were tentative.
We divided the group into sub-groups.
Sub A : Ron, TJ, Rakesh
Sub B : Prajwal, Prakyath, Saquib
Sub C : Suhas, Dhritul, Swaroop*

            Timings were set

            Starting Points
            ===============
            Nelamangala Expressway (0330 hours)

            Silk Board (0300 hours)

            Time | Check Point
            ...................
            Bhadravati | 0700 hrs Breakfast {approx 1 hour stop} leave at 0800 hrs
            Honavar | 1100 hrs Lunch {approx 1 hour stop} leave at 1200 hrs
            Palolem | 1500 hrs Destination {max it should be 1600 hrs.}

though abhi said “too optimistic ron, for group rides timings will be imperfect” , I said “yes, thats why imperfect time”

We planned up to meet the Mangalore group at Honnavar for lunch. And all ride together till goa.

and this is the proposed route
so all set. Finally 3 days and few hours to go for the ride. Its a great feeling to know that I will be riding to Goa with these guys, Riding across different places for 550 odd kms. First ever 1k+ kms long ride on my bike

YRC. GEARS. India Bike Week. GOA!!!

Can a weekend get any better for a rider? I suppose not. I certainly haven't yet come across something that is going to top this upcoming weekend. Maybe the next YRC ride to Goa!

With one of the main members of our group relegated to sitting hours on end on the couch at home, thanks to the stitches, it's going to lose a small portion of the excitement probably, but if he makes it, there's nothing better than that. Yep, it's the guy who started it all: Abhishek!

To imagine a sea of bikers, Yamahas and what not, cruising thru goa, bikers having fun, exchanging ideas, stories, tips and tricks, new people, and maybe new friends, that is the most exciting part for me!!

A great weekend in store for everyone that's coming!!

3 days. 72 hours. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock.

              The countdown is on!

My name is Suhas 'Rocky'. And i'm a biker, adventurer, and a nutcase.
