  • [Photo Feature]: Ninja Goes to Leh!

Hi Guys, after I did my Spiti trip on baby ninja in 2011, the keeda to take it to the mecca of bikers (Leh) was growing and finally I did get Leh'd last year in Sept. I am creating this thread to share my side of the story. This time around I wasn't as disappointed as in 2011 (reasons for the same can be read in ninja goes to spiti), but still things did not go as planned.

Well, life can't be enjoyed if everything happens as planned and we all did had a blast. Now the story goes that I have been planning to go to Leh in 2012 since Jan- Feb- Mar 2012 and there were (as usual) a hell lot of people who wanted to tag along, but as it happens with everyone when the time to go actually came everyone dropped/ changed their plans one by one. Then as I was desperate enough to go, was putting one liners here and there on xbhp about my desire to get leh'd in Sep 2012 when a fellow xbhpian (Anshul Jain) approached me and things kinda clicked. As days went by I ended up fracturing my right hand in July- Aug and although this was a setback but the desire and will to continue as planned was there. All went off well, got my plaster opened at the end of Aug and did whatever physio/ exercises to gain some strength and started with the trip.

Anshul, based out of jammu (coz of work) has had a bad experience few months back when he and a friend of his were planning a leh trip and at the day of starting the trip his friend didn't show up at the decided meeting point. As his friend's phone was also switched off early that day, Anshul decided to start a solo trip to Leh and reached srinagar, where he realized that his KTM Duke's front fork (one of the two) is leaking oil and finally the fork gave away and he was unable to continue his ride and had to cancel/ abandon his trip midway.

Sumeet Singh (from Bombay) meanwhile also contacted Anshul and his story was same, was ditched by a friend who said he will accompany him and later on abandoned him. His plan was that he will be sending his bike through parcel (Indian Railways) to srinagar and he himself would take a flight.

So guys, this is it finally, we all had a great time and this is my endeavour to share my side of the story of this awesome journey. I will be loading teaser pictures soon, stay hooked...

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

You're really fortunate to have been through to of the best tours in India a rider can yearn to experience!
Am reading through your Spiti log right now.....respect your spirit!

One question- You're a big guy, about 6'2" and 200 lbs I'm guessing...how comfy are you with the ergonomics of the Ninja on short and long rides?

Thanks bro, I am about 6'1" and about 230 lbs, no kidding, I am quite comfortable riding the bike except for the hard saddle. This is a heavy bike (175 kgs), plus you add riders weight on it, so handling wise I am quite comfortable riding it and post these two long tours I really trust the machine. And moreover, this being my first bike I do not have to make any comparisons.

                Day 0
Well the story goes like this. Sumeet was catching a flight from Mumbai and would reach Srinagar by Saturday afternoon. Anshul who was based out of Jammu (coz of work) and I (based out of Delhi) decided to reach Srinagar by end of day Saturday. For this I left Delhi on day 0. Idea was to wrap up everything at office early and drive down to Jullundhar.

This was almost 400 Kms from my house and the plan was to leave my place around 1:30- 2:00 p.m. I left according to plan and the weather was hot. The ride was uneventful and I reached Jullundhar (my uncle's place) by 9:00 p.m. I did encounter some traffic at Ludhiana, and due to the heat I used to take a butt break every hour or so. Some pics from that day are as follows:-

This ends day 0 and the plan for day 1 was to leave Jullundhar as early as possible (6:30 am) and rendezvous with Anshul at Samba and eventually reach Srinagar asap. Well as you all know in real life it seldom goes as planned and boy oh boy the next day was indeed full of surprises, and bad ones mind you. Now on a hindsight it did made me wiser and I did ended up being more wiser at the end of it. Stay tuned for more guys, till then...

Thanks for that feedback buddy, I'm about 6'1" too, though much leaner...haven't had the opportunity to ride the N250 till now hence was asking as most other modern bikes <250 cc are too compact for me.

So was it a 250, 650, Duke and an RE? And that looks like a CBR 250 to the 650"s right- part of your group? Can't tell from your post

Day 1: Jullundhar to Srinagar: 472 Kms

Now before I begin with what happend during the course of the ride on 01st September 2012 let me tell you all what the plan was for the day. As Sumeet (Mumbai based) would be catching the morning flight to Delhi and then another one to Srinagar, he was asked to make arrangements for the night halt at Srinagar. I was supposed to leave Jullundhar asap on Saturday morning and rendezvous with Anshul at Samba, 183 kms away. Anshul was kind enough to volunteer to meet at Samba instead of Udhampur.

I got up early as planned, packed up the stuff and was ready to leave. I met everyone at was given few paranthas with home made pickle as breakfast by my aunt. I was not ready to sit down and have proper breakfast and I never wanted to keep her under pressure for the same. She was kind enough to do it on her own and pack them for me to have it later. Now as I moved out of the house and hit the starter button on the bike, nothing happened. I have been quite wary of the bike condition right from the start of the tour, reason being that bike was getting old (2 1/2 years). Even though the odo then showed less than 6,000 kms but battery has a life in years. I was now beginning to panic. Also this was quite embarrassing situation to be in front of curious looking family members. I was supposed to inform Anshul when I leave Jullundhar and now I simply called him to share my concern. We decided that the way forward os to wait for a local service center to open and see if a new battery can be arranged. I got off the bike and removed my riding gear and then a thought hit my mind about push starting the bike. And when I tried moving the bike it would not budge, now I realised that it was in a gear. I simply put her in neutral and tried starting her again when the engine fired up and boy oh boy what a big relief it was. I was even more embarrased at my foolishness, but then again on a hindsight I never park my bike in a gear. It is a habbit to swicth back to neutral before getting off the bike. Later on while riding I would realise that may be my cousin brother had taken her for a short ride (yesterday), while I was having my bath. All this set me back my 15- 20 minutes and I quickly exchanged good byes and left Jullundhar. I tanked up on the way and hit the Amritsar highway, before taking a right towards Pathankot.

As this was the first time I was riding on this highway, I was loving the moring ride even more than the usual. It was newly laid tarmac with some areas with work in progress. Somehow the confidence to ride further at the beginning of such a long tour wasn't there, I dont know why. And to top it today morning's episode, however foolish it may sound but as I was riding alone all these thoughts used to trouble me now and then. Moreover it was a Saturday, and all such f**k ups happen with me on this very day. With these thought in my mind I kept on riding and took a break exactly an hour after I left jullundhar. It was lovely having my morning breakfast just by the side of a train track. I also sent another SMS to Anshul, informing him about my progress.

The next stop was while I passing through Pathankot. As It would roughly take Anshul and I the same time to reach Samba, I was supposed to inform him when I reach Pathankot. I called him and his Dad replied that he is taking his bath. I politely told him to inform Anshul about my progress and left. It was now beginning to get hot and as I had time for another break, I searched for a dhabha post crossing into Jammu from Punjab. Some pics from this pit stop:-

The last picture does give a clue to the things that were about to happen and threaten to disrupt the entrie trip. On this note I will take a break, do come back for more shortly...
