Re: Slush Affair- Malnad Monsoon trip
Day2:
Ah finally! Day 2 was the most exciting part of our trip.
Our plan was to ride to Kodachadri. We were not able to go there last time, though we were just 18-20 kms away from it.
As you all know, riding to koda in rains is never an easy task. We desperately wanted to do it this time.
I woke up first around 730am, slooooowly followed by others. By around 10Am every body was ready! Oh wait, ready to just eat breakfast and not to ride.
It was the effect of 'Gentleman Jack' that delayed the awakening of some Gentlemen in the group.
After having breakfast around 11am we were ready to saddle up and ride. Informed the homestay people that we will be coming for lunch, but a little late. You can see our heights of over confidence here! Phanikar lead the group towards Koda.First few kms from Sampekatte to koda were having good roads. After some 7kms there is the end of 'roads' and here starts the offroading path. This is usually the track of the 4x4 jeeps which transport the tourists to koda peak. My r15's rear tyre was on verge of death so i was pretty skeptical on its capability in offroads to stay 'upright'
and others were even more worried about me than myself. ZMA's and ZMR had the M45 rear, so they were treading easier on the slush, rocks etc.
Every hairpin turn was a challenge considering the slippery rocks and the steep rise. We had a Go-Pro video too. Bharath K will upload it shortly after converting to a 'sane' size.
Half way towards the Koda, we were interrupted by a landslide. It seems this had occured a day before and a JCB was busily clearing the debris. We were stopped by this for quite some time. Later heard thet it will take an hour to clear the whole path. So Phanikar went ahead to check the status. Myself and Bharath G also went up to see what the JCB was capable of
Though the path was cleared, the debris was full of loose soil which was easily a feet deep for a considerable distance. If we proceed along this riding in our bikes that is definitely going to be the end of this trip. Considering all this we decided to stop here and return back. The path was actually cleared to facilitate the 4x4 jeep's movement and not for bikes.
While taking a break at this point, waiting for the JCB to clear the path, we realised that we were standing in the zone of Leeches. suddenly everyone noticed leeches climbing our limbs. Each one of us had the 3 layer clothing including the raincoats, jackets and the casual tee's inside. I felt like leeches climbing all over my body, but was in no mood to remove all these clothes to check for them since it was raining heavily. SO everyone just checked the outer rain coats and made sure nothing is clinged on us.
We started to climb down. Climbing down in this stretch is the difficult job than climbing Up as the gravity is playing against us! All of us were very careful in making sure that we took the right line in all the hairpins. I would have been happier if i was riding my beloved rx. Sadly, considering its generous Fuel efficiency i did not take it for this trip.
we climbed down the ghats safely. Now it was the plains with a little of slush. Soon as we entered the plains Phanikar noticed that there was a stream crossing if we had to take a little detour. The stream was maximum knee deep, but was flowing quite fastly. I was a little excited seing this and the devil in us was already awake. Instead of taking the normal plain road we all wanted to take this little detour to cross this stream.
Phani and Jai were the first to test the stream by crossing it in their bikes. Later Myself and Bharaths' followed. The pics are attached below. Please have a look at them
Following this we shortly reached the nearest village where the off road ended with respect to the Koda climb. Had a small break in a tea shop nearby where Jai and others found that there were many leeches clinged on to them. So everybody removed their jackets and coats to check for leeches and as expected every one had minimum one leech on them :S After clearing this mess, we planned to go to the Hidlumane falls which is again some 20kms from where we stood.
We did not have any idea about this road we were about to take since none of us had been there earlier. So with zero expectations we started riding towards it. first 10kms were broken roads. Then after a sharp left diversion started the off road, again. We were expecting the koda type rocky roads since this was not very far from Koda. Siva on the NS was leading the group. He was quite excited seeing the slushy roads. The roads started to become more and more slushier that all of our rear was getting pulled left and right!
We had to twist our wrist very carefully since a little of carelessness could lead to a fall easily. Shorty we saw siva waiting in the side of the road with full of slush on his body. His bike was not there nearby him at first. I thought he had a fall.
But when i looked a little lower i found his bike stuck half way inside the slush! This is where the drama started. Or in other words the Party had started!
It was quite funny to think how he had sunk the bike this deep.
Since he tried to pull his bike out by giving throttle, the bike sunk more deeper. Everybody started to laugh and we were thinking how to take it out since the area in which it had sunk was very loose and did not allow us to stand next to it and pull it out. Keeping rocks, logs etc under its rear wheel did not help to get the traction since there was mud everywhere in its tyre. Even the chain sprockets were full of mud! With no other option we took a log and put it inside the fron wheels and one in the rear wheel. Pulled the bike out finally, with the help of the log. One by other, started crossing this slush with atmost care but neverthless we were stuck inside it. Not to the extent of the NS but still it did require a lot of push to cross this slush strecth. soon all of us had crossed it and we thought it is over, but hey there were two more such crossing on our way. No words can explain the feeling we had. Heart was full of fear that we may slip and sink inside the mud but that was source of our adrenaline pumping up!
Our energy was draining fastly in the recue operations we did for each other's bikes. This was just one way and we had to face the return leg as well. Rain was also constantly increasing which means it is making the slush more dangerous. At the second slush point (thats how i can recall it) my front wheel sinked. With help of others i pulled it out to see that the disc was filled with mud. I tried to remove it but not effectively!. Everytime the wheel turned the disc pads were scratching the rotor and i could hear it.Third Slush point and God, we were completely drained. No one knew that this would be the last. So some suggested to turn back home. But two of us had already crossed it. Phanikar told that he will go ahead and call them back so that we all can turn back. We helped him to cross. But there was no sign of him coming back even after a long time. So Jai said he will go ahead and check and the same happened again. With no other option, rest of us crossed this slush praying that this should be the last and went ahead searching for them.
In a few kms the road ended and we found all the guys sipping hot tea and stuffing biscuits happily. We also joined the snack break and equired about the roads to the falls. The locals said it is a 3km trek to the falls from this point. It was already 4.30pm and rain was intesifying every minute. So we planned to ride back. Took some pics in this place and started to ride back. The scenery at this place was mind blowing. Lush green mountains and plenty of paddy fields below them made the sight hard to forget.
As we had an experience in this stretch we had quite some knowledge about the right line to take in the slushy areas which were easier to cross now. The return trip was easier and less tiring. The leech attack was very much strong in this stretch also! but we din bother about it much here since we were more worried about keeping the bikes above the ground.
After we reached the nearest village we equired for a place where we can clean our bikes. Heard it was there in a nearby village and we headed there. Cleaned all our bikes in pressure wash and Bharath K cleaned himself too in the same pressure washer
The time was around 7-730pm by now and if you remember, we had told the homestay that we will be back for lunch a bit delayed.
Unfortunately we reached there for Dinner.
Refreshed ourselves quickly and it was time to open the dirty goose' and become 'gentleman jacks'
. Later had dinner and ended the day with a sound peaceful sleep, which was much needed after an action packed day!
The experience in Day 2 was completely not an expected one. It obviously was the best part of our trip.
Pics will continue. Day3 log coming soooon

I've noticed that the image sizes become different if they are used as thread attachments.
If you upload your pics to an external site and then link the urls on the thread, the sizes are controllable.
See for example - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/2...ogenekkal.html

Re: Slush Affair- Malnad Monsoon trip
Yes attaching pictures, for some reason does alter the size. Haven't figured that out yet.
But if you upload the pictures to xbhp's autopictorials and then link them to your thread, then there is absolutely no problem. Try thatBiking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!
Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city
