  • [Photo Feature]: Slush Affair- Malnad Monsoon trip

    Prologue:

Western Ghats has always been a spot on location for people who love to ride in monsoon season. And there were No second thoughts on where to head, when we wanted to do a monsoon trip!
Two years before we had been to the same Malnad belt during monsoon and that proved to be one of the happiest and memorable trip to all of us, who had participated. It was my best trip not only because of route or the scenery which we got to see, but it was about getting to know some good people who still are my best buddies when it comes to riding.

Having shifted to Chennai(home) from coimbatore(ex-work location) had taken a toll on the riding chapter of mine.I have not been riding for quite a long time since shifting my base. There were talks in office that I may have to travel abroad for work and others in Bangalore, badly needed a trip to get out of the clutches of 'aapis' headaches. So came the idea to do this trip.

There were huge expectations on this trip from every rider since the previos WG trip's benchmark was set quite high. So we left the route planning and accommodation to Phanikar and Jai.

    The riders were,
1.Arnab Roy from Bangalore on HH ZMA
2.Bharath Gadiyar from Bangalroe on CBR250
3.Bharath Kumar from Bangalore On P230
    4.Deepak (myself) from Chennai on R15 v2
5.Jayakrishna from Bangalore on HH ZMR
    6.Phanikar-from Bangalore on HH ZMA
    7.Sivaraj from Coimbatore on P200NS.

    The route taken was,
    Day1-Bangalore-Hassan-Chickmagalur-Thirthahalli-Sampekatte
    Day2-Sampekatte-Kodachadri-Hidlumane falls-sampekatte
    Day3-Sampekatte-Thirthahalli-Sringeri-Kudremukh
    Day4-Kudremukh-Lakhya dam-Mudigere-Hassan-Bangalore.

                Haha...to answer you
                1. The rider of that bike was so happy seeing slush that he got stuck, into this first. Then as he tried to give more throttle, more it sunk.
                2. We did lift it up.
Well, we were the 'sane people' until we saw this! later after crossing one such muck road everybody got high and went on to complete the whole route, not to forget the return leg .

Re: Slush Affair- Malnad Monsoon trip

                  Pre-Ride:

It was just June and merely a week after the news of monsoon onset in KL, we were quite excited. Wanted to go on a monsoon trip before it reaches its peak or in worst case prove to be a dud like last year.
I was supposed to go abroad and wanted to do a trip as quick as possible. There was a bit of confusion about fixing the date as Arnab roy had trouble convincing his BOSS in home!
Later somehow managed to fix the first weekend as ride dates. Phanikar and Jayakrishna planned the Routes and booked the accommodation.
Now I had a problem of travelling to Bangalore, before the ride day to join rest of them. I had hard time in getting leaves, so i planned to ride the bike a weekend earlier and to drop it in Bangalore.
That way i can join the others on the ride day by travelling in public transport a night before.
Arnab roy was not able to bring his GT650N, so Phanikar had arranged a ZMA for him.

                  Day1:

Everything went well as planned, i reached bangalore at 5Am on 4th July and got refreshed quickly. Arnab roy had filled my R15's tank and lubed it. He had filled his ZMA's tank and lubed it as well (now this line is to be noted for future reference ).
Whole group was supposed to meet at the start of elevated highway near yeshwanthpura i guess, at 545am. The regular latecomer Arnab was surprisingly ready but it was Jai who was late this time. Sivaraj and Bharath G also joined us near BTM itself. We all met Phanikar and Bharath K at the rendezvous point at around 7am.
Had a small chat and were good to go. Arnab's bike was having cold start problems right from home. But somehow he managed it. Our next stop was scheduled as Mayura hotel near bellur cross. As we started to ride towards it, in few kms, Arnab's bike again stalled and was not able to cross 70 kmph. Now the ZMA he was riding is Phanikar's bike. So Phanikar came and tried to check the carb and tried to reset it. Voila! the bike started and after a boring 4 lane ride we reached Mayura for breakfast.

We had delicious dosas and vadas.Jai was supposed to pay the breakfast bill since he was the one responsible for the delayed start. But he somehow escaped and made some poor bakra to pay the bill.
As we had some leisure time here Phanikar tried to check the problem in his bike (which Arnab was riding) in depth. Tried all the settings right from Rich to lean but nothing seemed to solve the issue. It took a lot of time and was already around 11Am. Now with no other option we took the bike to a nearby mechanic.
He checked the bike and found that the 'culprit' was, the severely adulterated fuel. When we drained the fuel out of the bike it was clearly evident that it is not the normal petrol. It looked tad different, with the volatile nature of diesel. And ZMA had a whooping 10-12ltrs of it still. Mind you, the bike has already run 100 odd kms in this fuel!
Arnab Roy was already cursing the fuel station guys in ********** words'. Thankfully he had fueled my R15 in a different station. By the time the ZMA's tank and carb cleaning was done it was already 2PM. Unfortunately we had the lunch in same place where we had breakfast After fueling the ZMA now with 'normal petrol' we started towards Hassan-chickmagalur.

Maintained around 100 as the average speed in the 4 lanes, we tried to push quicker to the Hassan. Reached Hassan around 4-5pm if i remember correctly and found that Jai's ZMR is leaking oil. For the first day of a monsoon trip this is already too much of trouble to bear!
Jai checked the issue with the service center nearby and solved the issue quickly. Meanwhile Phanikar wanted the rest of us to push to the destination- Sampekatte which is another 200 odd kms from now. We all knew it is going to be a dark night- rain ride. So myself, Bharath, Arnab and Siva pushed towards Chickmagalur first. From then we had to ride slow, since it started raining.
Crossed Chickamagalur shortly and needless to say the route was already covered with greenery all around! Bharath G was leading us and we reached the balehonnur road, right where we found the small pond which is the usual adda spot for in whenever we cross this road. It gets filled up with water only during monsoon time and sports a full lush green look in this season. Had a small chat and photo clicking session over there.
Bharath had got a message from Phani saying that he had a fall near Belur and that he is fixing his bike. We were quite shocked by hearing this but were glad when we heard that he was not hurt badly.

Now it was already pitch dark and we were supposed to wait in the Badra coffee shop for Phani, Jai and Bharath K. We rode to that Coffee shop and reached there by 7-730Pm. The shop was closed by that time. After reaching there we got a message from Phanikar that they had fixed the bike but it will take time for them to reach the rendezvous point. So we were asked to push to the destination directly.
The roads from now on were full of rough patches and with a R15's candle light (head light is so weak) i was literally seeing nothing in non stop rains, was just following the Bharath's tail lamps. Arnab roy behind me was doing better since he had a better headlight. We reached Koppa around 9-930 and stopped for a break. Had a small chat there, Bharath had parked his bike in loose soil due to which the bike fell down breaking the left RVM. His bike had crash bobbins, so nothing else was damaged.
From Koppa we had to cross thirthahalli, nagara and sampekatte. When we crossed nagara it was raining cats and dogs. That was quite heavy that we could feel the force of each droplet, falling on our body! That lovely feeling !!!
Somehow we reached Sampekatte around 12-1230am. Our stay was at Parvatha homestay and the owner Sandeep Bhat opened the gates for us and helped us to check in. We had a nice home made dinner and left to our rooms for taking a nice nap. We knew that the other group would take a lot of time to reach the stay since they were easily 2hours behind us.
As predicted Phanikar, Jai and Bharath K reached around 2am riding in super-heavy rains. The owner had provided food for them.

First day was quite a troublesome day for us. We had to face lot of unexpected problems, but still the ride was quite thrilling since most of it was done as night ride, not to forget about the rains!
Afterall this is what we wanted . Not much of pics were taken on the Day1.

                  Day2 log coming soon...
