Re: From scorching heat to freezing cold! A ride of a lifetime! (Nagpur - Leh - Delhi

DAY 3: Scorching heat to sand storms! (Delhi to Jammu)

Woke up around 4:00AM to genuine concerns from my family about the trip.

Just the thought of us undertaking such a journey towards the unknown that too on one of the most element-vulnerable modes of transport was too much to digest in one go!
Mom insisted we stay one more day in Delhi, take some more rest. Dad was also concerned about Amogh's bike. Amogh had raised some concern regarding some misfiring issues he was facing. But we knew it was totally manageable and should something happen we could always turn back.

With a promise of taking all precautions and being aware of our situation at all times and returning back in one piece, we left Delhi after a delayed start around 8'o clock.

Notice the brand new rear CEAT!

By the time we left, the traffic had already started, though we didn't get stuck at any jam there was enough traffic to keep us on our toes.
Although the heat hadn't given up we had a heads up about the road conditions from a few of dad's colleagues. Continuously cruising around 90-100kmph, at 10:00 AM we took our first water break after travelling some 100kms from home.

After a short break, we resumed our ride. The ride was totally non-eventful and actually quite boring. Just straight roads for kilometers and kilometers.
It was actually helping me getting used to the changed characteristics of my bike because of the changed rear tire.

Initially, I could notice the handling having changed quite a bit. The original configuration gives the R15 a very nimble and sharp handling, which was totally missing. The bike now had to be pushed to take quick turns and it took some time to get adjusted to the new setup.
But it wasn't all that bad.
The slightly higher profile of the tire meant that I was travelling a tad bit faster at any given rpm in any gear than I was on the original setup. That was pretty cool actually. Also, the grip of the tire on the highway was phenomenal. I had more confidence than before while using the rear brake while slowing down too. I kept experimenting with the tire, went slightly off-road on a diversion to overtake some a** who wasn't budging despite the honking, flashing. Turned out to be later that our "janaab" was busy on his mobile phone..

All in all the experiments kept me occupied pretty long.

Our next stop was at some dhaba we found on the highway, at around 11:20 AM. Ate some parathas and omlette which mom had given, ordered some pakodas and tea and water.
All the dhabas there over-charge for water. This guy was not ready to sell below Rs.30/bottle. This was when we had already finished 3 bottles and had asked for 4 more to carry along. So, we ended up spending Rs. 200 on water only!

Not thinking about it much, we carried on.

Our next halt was directly at 1:40PM, where we had stopped to drink some water, which was now hot!
When I was switching the ignition off, I noticed the whole part in which the key is inserted was kinda loose! It had me worried slightly as I thought it could turn into something major later on. Be it luck or whatever, the place we stopped there was a Yamaha showroom just across the road and there was a turn exactly there, so no travelling extra kms to find a turn.

Not sure about how, using what tool and where to tighten it from, I told Amogh I would go and come back in a jiffy.
The mechanics there were more than happy to help me out, and did the job quickly. Had many people there surround me, asking me about the trip why, who, where, and why again.

Went back, geared up and carried on.

Chandigarh city was where the heat hit us the most. Temperatures were crazily high and there was a point both I and Amogh started getting a shivering sensation. We knew that was not a good sign. We stopped immediately at the next shop where we saw water and shade! Amogh had stopping at some restaurant with AC in mind, but if we had to carry on without losing much time, that was not an option.

We drank almost 2 liters of water each, ate some snickers, drank some cold-drinks and when we thought we were fine, we carried on. As far as I can recollect this was around 2:30 PM.

After a few kilometers, the temperatures started falling and the wind started picking up speed. Before we knew it, we were riding midst a sand storm.

Tall trees on the side of the road shaking violently, visibility dropped drastically. Debris was flying all around us, branches falling off the trees and what not.
It sounds like a tense situation, but we were enjoying every part of it, thoroughly. We had not reduced our cruising speed, were still maintaining around 90 kmph wherever we deemed it safe enough. Being fully faired, R15 suffers a lot from cross winds and the lower the straight line speed, more the effect.

On that whole patch, I was leaning. On a straight road. At 90 kmph. At some intervals the wind would get so strong, it would push my bike sideways so bad that I used to end up in the opposite lane at times. (it was a 2 lane highway, no divider)

The conditions were such, the cars wallahs who overtook us on the highway, being all smug had slowed down quite a bit. The least the expected was two bikers, fully geared, head-lights on overtaking them at speeds they could not imagine traveling at - at that point of time.

It was like the driver is driving at around 60 kmph, branches falling on the windshield, dust everywhere, concentrating on the road then suddenly, there is a flash of light in his rvms! Then, "Zoooom........zooooom..." All he could probably see would be a black object then before he recovered from the suddenness of it, WHITE! another object white closely following the black one.

It was fun. I knew the dangers of the flying debris too. But stopping there was not an option at all as there were tall trees on both sides of the road and no proper shelter anywhere.
It wasn't all that fun though.

I was riding, at those speeds there was lots going on in the surroundings. All of a sudden, I could see a sizable piece of tree wood breaking off the tree and heading right for me. Everything got in slow-mo then. I could probably count in milliseconds then. "BANG" it went right for my face. In that time frame, I had managed to tuck my head a bit more into the crouch I was already in but it still hit my visor and there was a huge scratch left behind.

You can imagine i had clear vision a second before and suddenly I had this big, deep scratch centimeters away from my left eye, on my visor. This happened at least three or four times, and I could see my brand new mirror finish visor getting covered with scratches all over the place. Luckily, nothing major went wrong.

We stopped to answer the only call which doesn't involve any phone.

The DSG jackets we were full of sand. The gear we were wearing saved us from the flying debris. Never more have we ever realized the importance of that.

The next major stop was around once we got out of that mess and hit the open 4-lane highway again. Ate some leftovers from the morning, drank some water and took some rest. We were here for a good one hour.
Jammu was still 150 kms ahead.

From this day in our journey, there was daylight almost till 8:00PM. Don't know the reason though.
We left that spot around 8:15 PM and made it safely to our Jammu hotel at 10:30 PM.

The day marked a new phase in our journey. Jammu was a place where we hadn't been before and it was exciting to know that we were finally heading closer and closer to our destination, Leh!

DAY 4: (Worst day of our trip: Jammu to Ramban)

We were keeping our facebook buddies updated through status updates and a few occasional photos too.

The status I put up the day we were to leave Jammu was :

"Finally we've beat the heat! Traveled 600 odd from Delhi to Jammu yesterday.. Went very smoothly.. Its all uphill from here ;p, if you know what I mean.. And for those who may not know, prepaid connections do not work here in J&K.. those who may need to call, send me a Facebook message, I'll give you my number.. Next stop Srinagar."

All I know now is that I've never been more wrong about anything as I was about this...

We started the day with high hopes, specially regarding the temperatures. The distance to be covered was around 300kms. So, we left our hotel after a relaxed/delayed start around 10:00 AM.
By then, the market area where our hotel was located, was already bustling with shop-keepers opening up their shops getting ready for a routine they've been following since I don't know when and will continue to do so till I don't care when.

The thing maybe I hate the most about touring is the pre-ride preparation.
It generally takes us around 30-40 minutes to do our thing: Bringing down the luggage from the room, dusting the bike, inspecting it for any signs of damage, removing the mobile charger cable from under the seat, fastening the luggage, putting on the knee guards, wearing the jacket, putting on the balaclava, starting the bike for a pre-ride warm-up, setting up the GPS, wearing the gloves, putting on the helmet and then actually leaving.
One mistake in the order of it and you probably have to redo everything again. That day, I forgot to remove the charging cable from under my seat. This I realized while I was about to set the GPS!

Had no option but to remove the Viaterra from the saddle, and then re-fastening it.
With this already having tipped me off, and the temperatures still making me sweat like hell the thing that happened next pushed me off the edge.

As it was, there was no proper parking facility in our hotel. I had parked in front of the hotel entrance and were covering some part of the adjacent shop.
Murphy's law as we know it, "anything that can go wrong, will go wrong" was at it's highest level pf applicability that day!
The owner of the shop came, while I was still fastening my saddle bag. His shop had two big wooden doors covering it when closed. I was somewhat in the way but not obstructing anything of his, except that he could not open one of the doors fully to lock it in that position. Trust me, it was not a major set back for him. I requested him to wait for 2 minutes as we were about to leave and that's all the time I required to set things up. Instead of helping me out, he started mumbling and saying "abhi niklo yaha se, darwaaza poora kholna hai". I got totally pissed and shouted back at him, which probably ruined his day too.

After relocating my bike and finishing whatever was left to be done, we left that place after struggling to a little to find the correct way out.

As we know, biking is more about taking turns than riding on straights. We were happy that the ghats had started and before we knew it we were climbing up towards Patni Top.
But still, one thing not right was the heat. It was still quite hot, and more humid. I had been to Patni Top before and from what I remember, it was cold there. Hoping the mercury will fall any moment, we carried on.

We were pretty confident with our ghat-riding skills as we had crossed Amboli Ghat on the way to Goa last year. But this was nothing like it. More sharper turns, more traffic and more heat. Although we were enjoying the curves the drivers were there to ruin it for us.
Not giving side, then trying to overtake us later on.
                      This went on and on.

I was leaning into just one of the many curves there and while on the exit, "whoops!!#!" my heart skipped probably more than one beat and then immediately started beating overtime!
Thinking that Amogh, who was following me closely at that time, would have seen what happened, I made frantic gestures to him trying to mean "wt* just happened??".
He too waved back in a similar way, so I thought he had seen that on the exit of that curve, I almost slipped and fell as my rear tire suddenly lost all grip and then quickly regained it.
Turned out later that actually he too had lost control for a sec. back there and he thought i was asking him what he was doing, thinking I saw him in my rvm!

After a few more curves, my heart was almost getting back to its normal rhythm. Then, nightmare!

It was a hairpin curve, almost a U-turn kind of turn with the road sloping upwards at the exit. I entered it and as I reached the apex, before I knew it I had lost grip and was sliding on the tarmac. When I fell, I felt that sinking feeling and in those moments while I was still sliding to a stop I was depressed. All negative thoughts rushed through my mind. Now that I've fallen, I've probably damaged my bike. NO WAY we can continue to Leh now! We'll have to turn back. All those who never believed something of the sorts we were doing could be done, by us, would get the last laugh and what not! When I came to a halt, still on the tarmac, surprisingly the sound of the fiber scraping against the tarmac had still not stopped!

I looked behind, I saw Amogh too in the same position as me, low sided and lying down on the tarmac, still sliding!

                      "The" curve:

As strange as it may sound, that made me lose some depression! Probably as now I had someone in the same condition as me!! Moreover, I knew it was not my riding which was at fault. There was something on the road that day that made us slip. This was confirmed also by the fact that the car and even truck tires were squealing, struggling to keep grip on that curve.

We stopped, assessed the damage. There was not much damage to my bike. The LHS fairing had some scratches and that was that but there was some damage to the Apache's left foot peg, but Amogh concluded that he could manage with it till Srinagar. The silver lining was neither of us were hurt at all. The knee guards and jacket had done their part that day.

After a few minutes, we continued our ride. We reached Patni Top, where the heat was still not giving up. After a few more kilometers, we both were extremely fatigued and sleepy. We halted on the road side and laid down along side our bikes ate some of the stuff we were carrying, but still hungry and unsatisfied. Cars and buses passed by with the passengers giving us a concerned look, so we decided to move on.

Each kilometer was like ten! We had lost confidence in leaning. The trucks coming from the other side never felt more out to kill us! Thoroughly exhausted Amogh cam by my side and suggested we call it a day. I was thoroughly disappointed in myself for not having reached our target Srinagar that day. We stopped at the next proper hotel we saw. It looked good, and after some bargaining we got an AC room with a price still quite steep.

The place was Ramban District, 150kms from Srinagar. We reached there around 2:30 PM, got to our room, ordered some chicken
                      ate and then slept!

I tell you, that was the best decision ever! I really thank Amogh for having the courage to realize and admit that Srinagar, that day was just out of our reach. My parents too, were extremely happy by our decision and their faith in us grew as now they knew that we didn't shy off from admitting our failure that day. That did cheer me up, so next day I was in high spirits again!

DAY 5: (Ramban to Srinagar and a ride on water)

Woke up early around 6:00 in the morning, completely relaxed and refreshed. Took a nice warm bath and decided to leave asap and eat something on the way, later.
We were greeted by the freshness of the valley and the sound and sight of the river Chenab which was flowing with all grace and might.
We had decided to take it easy today, with a plan to reach Srinagar by afternoon.

                              The Hotel:

After the daily pre-ride ritual, we left the hotel around 7:30AM.
I was all the very more happy with our decision of halting at Ramban the previous day, because of the views we would have missed or ignored due to the tiredness.

As we covered more and more distance, the scenery kept getting more and more beautiful.

Once again I had regained confidence on the roads and was thoroughly enjoying the ride.
I had never before ridden this much on ghats. So, the main difference I notice from the straights was, the distance we covered. I usually keep an eye on the distance traveled since the morning not only to get an idea of expected arrival, average speed but also about the range I've got on the remaining fuel.
On straights, every 10 minutes the odo would show me the previous reading +8kms - 10kms. But on the ghats, the progress naturally got much slower with maximum speeds not exceeding 50-60 kmph. So after having adjusted my expectation levels every time I take a peek at the odo, all was good again!

We stopped for a cup of tea and some snacks around 10:00 AM! Ended up being invited by a local shop owner for lunch at his house, to which we politely refused.

After tea, we continued our ride.
We also crossed the Jawahar tunnel that day. I had read that it could be damp and slippery on the inside. So, after the initial acting out to quench the pure desire to hear our own machines rev high, and atleast for me failing at it, given that R15 is quite a quiet machine, I sobered up and started riding cautiously.

The roads, as we started closing in on Srinagar had straightened up and we could maintain good speed again. Stopped at a couple of mechanics, including an authorized TVS showroom to source a replacement for the damaged foot peg. Having no sign of finding it, we decided to get it at Srinagar only.

A few more pics of the ride that day:

We reached the army quarters in Srinagar around 2:00 PM, where we were to stay for the night. That was another new and awesome experience. Never had I been so confident in keeping the door unlocked even when Amogh and I both were out! The army hospitality was outstanding. We ate some tasty chicken for lunch, and headed towards our respective showrooms to get the bikes inspected and repaired if necessary.

The Yamaha service team in Srinagar were really helpful and although it was near closing time for them, they took the bike in. There I got the bike washed, chain lubed and air filter cleaned.
                              But tragedy!
While he was lubing the chain, I noticed a wobble in my rear tyre. It was shocking! I had actually noticed some sort of instability on braking and on curves but I was blaming it on the new rear tyre. I asked the head mechanic there his opinion. According to him, it was totally within manageable limits and there was no need to get anything done.
Amogh on the other hand got the foot peg replaced and bought a spare one extra just in case.

After that, we headed towards Dal Lake. It looked not so impressive, the crowd turned us off even more. But all changed after, against initial skepticism, we went for the shikara ride.
After having been riding for the past few days, we were used to bumpy rides. Every time I saw a bump, I had to brake hard, try to avoid it, else brace for it.
It was not while riding that we realized how hard it actually was.
The moment we set off on the Shikara, *bliss*!!!
It was so smooth! The small currents would rock the Shikara gently, so gently as if it were a cradle and Amogh and I were two babies!
The scenery was so beautiful. We could get glimpses of the snow capped mountains where we were to head soon. Though it was slightly bugging that the whole "shikara ride" thing was supposed to be romantic and girly, I didn't care!
Both of us were never so relaxed, so far from home, yet so near to nature and to ourselves! (NOT each other!!! ).

After the Shikara ride, we were convinced that our stay at Srinagar had already become memorable and we decided to head towards Kargil against ongoing thoughts about staying one more day there for sight-seeing.

Ate fish cooked by the Army Chefs and drank some whisky too!
