This day trip was done in one of the cycling/hiking routes to the hills lying on the north of Kathmandu Valley. The Trip we did was from Kathmandu-Sundarijal-Chisapani and came back same route.
As planned earlier I was at rendezvous point and waited for all to arrive at around 9AM. We were total of 5 person and 3 bikes. We quickly got few supplies for the day like water, juice; some snacks did some photo shoot and then headed towards our destination. Since we had planned to return back by evening we had to hurry little bit.
After some 14kms of smooth road we reached to the outskirts of Kathmandu a place called Sundarijal. From there Shivapuri National Reserve Forest also starts and it is the place where the most of the kathmanduties get their drinking water. There are big water reservoirs but since our routes were different one, we skipped it.
After going some kms of dirt road and steep uphill roads we took a rest for some photo shoots. Then we continued towards our destination. The trail was going right through the middle of the forest and sometime it would be little scary as we had heard the leopards are there in that forest. We did not meet any people either in trek or any locals and nor any bikers so we wanted to cross that section as fast as possible. Another scary imagination was what if there were tyre puncture at that place? Luckily we did not encounter leopard not any one of us had flat tyres.
Travelling some 4-5km more uphill trail the landscape changed a bit and now we were riding our bikes on the narrow stretch of the hill where on one side there was just a natural wall (of hill itself) and other side steep gulf. Then out of sudden we saw one plain land out of nowhere that to with little marshy lake.
WOW we just stopped there and had massive photo shoot. It was unexpected view.
We continued towards original destination which was now just few more kms. Finally we reached Chisapani, a place on the hilltop from where you can view various mountain ranges like Langtang mountain range and even Mount Everest -the highest peak in the world. That place is a rest station for hiking. If we had hiked from Kathmandu, it would have taken one full day about 5-6hrs of walk. So we enjoyed mountain views, had a lunch, wondered around for an hour or so then we were again back in the bikes. We used the same route as there was no alternative route in which we could take bikes. There were few alternatives routes but could be done by hiking only.
Return ride was smooth and leisure as there was no rush and now we had knowledge of the road but saying that we missed one junction and took another path. More we go ahead more and more the track condition became worst and reached a point from where there was no track ahead..
Then we were 100% sure that we were on wrong path. It was getting dark so we immediately started to return back. Funny part was that there were other few bikers who were also confused about the track and they followed us to return back only.
Finally we found the junction from where we had taken wrong turn then continued back to the Kathmandu and reached safely but too tired.... We were in so rush that we did not took photos while returning and now while writing this log I so many times regret what stopped us from taken one two quick snaps??? May be next time... photos have not done justification of the whole thrill.. learning by doing
