  • [Photo Feature]: A ride to witness an engineering marvel - Srisailam Dam

Its not often you get to see open gates of Srisailam dam on Krishna River. It happens for few days in a year and its a visual treat when all the gates are opened. Its located in Nallamala forest, the largest tiger reserve in India. The roads are excellent to ride.

So, I have been following the weather reports and rain information in Satara area and Chikmagulur and Kudremukh area keenly since last month (the source of water for Krishna river). With incessant rains in these areas for the last 20 days, all the dams above Srisilam were full within no time and the Srisailam dam (holds 300tmc of water) was full by last Thursday. AFAIK, this is the first time Srisialm dam is full in the month of July.

I informed this to our riders in xBhp Hyderabad, and a group of 7 riders finally made it on the D-Day to witness the marvel.

    Riders:

    1. Ravi Varma (me) on Red Karizma
    2. Pavan Kumar on Blue Karizma R
    3. Gaurav Kolte and Karthik Shanmukha on Royal Enfield
    4. Naveen on RE 500 FI
    5. Karthik Vasanth on Black ZMR
    6. Sanjay Sandhu on Black ZMR
    7. Debayan Santra on Blue Avenger

    Route Map:

    This is what we witnessed.

    Rest will be continued.

Wow Ravi!! Stunning start of pic there. Our brimming over dams are really such a treat for sore eyes. Your lovely logs have made Andhra a "must do" in my future ride plans.

Re: A ride to witness an engineering marvel - Srisailam Dam

So, our plan was to meet at Tukkuguda ORR junction by 6:30 a.m., but by the time everyone arrived it was 8 a.m., and we still were not hurry. The climate was nice, and the roads were awesome, with thick green on either side. Once the stretch between Hyderabad to Kalvakurthy used to be full of potholes, and I can still remember a few of us having bent rims riding over this road. Thankfully, this road is now relaid and its been good for the last two years.

Once upon a time, roads used to have huge trees on either side to make the travel a pleasant one. Now these trees are fast disappearing with four lanes.

We rode to Dindi directly with one break in between. Had breakfast there at a Udipi hotel, while chatting about biking. Started again and stopped just before climbing the hills to have a photo session.

          We are going there...

          Pavan's trademark jump...

We soon entered the Nallamala forest, which is a ghat section. Though its on hills, most of the stretch is straight and you could do easily 80-100 kmph on most of the time. There were good corners here and there for us to enjoy.

We thoroughly enjoyed the corners and the smooth tarmac with thick green forest on either side. Took a break at Mallelatheerdham junction and then rode to Srisailam Dam by around 12:30 p.m. As we near the dam, we could listen the water gushing sound. We were happy to see 8 gates open and it was a visual treat.

The Dam was built in a deep gorge between hills, and is a huge structure. The 12 gates when opened fully can dispense 25 Lac Cusecs of water. The water flows down 500 feet and you can guess the magnanimity of this. There is no other dam like this in India. The pictures would speak for that. When you cross this dam, you have to pass through rain, not from the clouds, but from the water spillage from the dam water. Such is the force of the water.

We spent almost 1.5 hours near the dam watching it from various view points, taking pics, and enjoying the awesomeness. It was sunny and humid there, and finally we had to leave and return.

          Rest will be continued.

This ride was done last Saturday. In this part of area, not much of rain this year. The inflows into Srisailam dam are from Almatti and Tungabadhra.

Ryan, thank you! We didn't happen to spot any animals, except monkeys, goats and buffaloes. The wild animals will be inside the forest, its a very huge forest. Going inside not allowed.

Yeah, they are V1 ZMR's grab rails. Helpful in easy tying of luggage with bugee cords.
