  • Venice of the east...

700 kms was somethings guys had achieved in a day in the past and since then something even bigger was on everyone's mind. Independence day was ticking and we had the reason to ride.

So what should be the destination then, should it be towards the South or the North?

Three of us confirmed for the north a month before the ride and the first destination came to our mind was the City of lakes, Udaipur, Rajashtan.

Preparations started and the initial count of 3 riders turned into 6 just a week before the ride...

    Ride dates:
    15,16,17, and 18th Aug 2013

    Riders:
    Gaurav - R15
    Puspal - R15
    Kuntal - R15
    Viper - N250R
    Kaushik - FZs
    Imran - R15

            Plan:

The idea was of 4 days ride starting 15th Aug to 18 Aug 2013, destination Udaipur.

There were 2 route options, one via Gujarat and other via Madhya Pradesh. Whether forecast and Road condition updates from the fellow riders suggested to take Gujarat route which was showing 930 km on the map.

Considering the definite chances of the rain on the route we gonna ride the preparations started with the purchase of Raincoats.

Then came the bungee cords and purchase/borrow of saddle bags and tail bags.

Everyone had riding gear so we were kind of ready on the safety front.

All of us got our bikes serviced a week before the ride.

Spirit of Independence and excitement of the ride was rising

Spent some time fixing the luggage on the bikes and we were ready to fly by 4:45 am.

It was dark and there is nothing to say about visibility of R15's headlights on highways, we had 4 R15's out of 5 bikes from Pune. Decided to take cover behind

Viper's N250R's bright headlights and ride in a single file till Panvel, strictly not fast riding on wet roads in dark. :|

Ride started from Chandni chouk by 4:45 am, joined NH4.

Reached Lonawala doing decent speeds of 80-90 kmph by 5:45 am, it was still dark and extremely foggy at Lonavala.

Unable to see anything beyond 6-7 feet, slowed down and crossed foggy patches.

Fog was cleared by the time we reached expressway patch and darkness started fading slowly, crossed express way patch, regrouped. Everyone started catching speeds after Khapoli and did good speeds(110-120 kmph) till Panvel.

Darkness was completely gone and we had good light now, but then came super bad patches filled with potholes and diversions after Panvel.

Reached Turbhe finding the road in potholes by 7 am, good road begins approximately 500 meter before Turbhe railway station...

                        Bad chapter of the ride...

Frustrated with potholes and diversions after Panvel, we reached Turbhe. Road was bad till the flyover just before railway station.

Checked everyone is present and continued to ride.

After the Flyover cement road begins, 4 lane road with footpath, minor traffic. Started catching speeds, myself riding ahead followed by Puspal and him followed by Kuntal.

Was riding in left lane doing 70-80 Kmph, time 7.10 am(approx...), saw a speed breaker 35-40 feet ahead, right before the railway station entrance. One CoolCab Indica approaching the breaker, I reduced my speed while showing the signal for the breaker.

Heard sound of Puspal's Daytona exhaust slowing down and then.... some unusual sound, something was skidding behind , probably in the right lane

                              Ride Resumes...

After the 3 hours of recovery, we were ready to ride by 10.15 am.

Public around was staring at our bikes like anything, riders literally enjoyed celebrity feeling with all the fan following near Turbhe. Kids were trying to touch the bikes, trying to get the sight of the instrument clusters, asking top speeds, trying to blow horns.

One of the funniest question from the curious kids around "Tumhi London varun aalat ka?" (Are you guys coming from London?)

Are these really a R15's and Ninja's or we own something like Busa's and Gixxer's??? this thought must have came in every riders mind that moment

Kaushik Joined with his FZ-S and since he knew Mumbai more than any one of us, we started riding under his lead in order to cross the city.

Finding paths through the traffic, loosing groups - regrouping, viewing Independence day rallies when we were out of the city, the clock was showing 11.45 am. :|

Not a very good timing considering you have 700+ kms waiting ahead and 30% of the day is already over...
