  • [Photo Feature]: Visit to Attari Border and Golden Temple (which was long time due)

For quite some time past had been planning to visit Wagah Border besides paying a visit to Golden Temple. But for one reason or another it was kept pending although it is just 500 kms from Delhi and Time and distance being no big issue.

But during the last few days I was having a strong feeling to accomplish this visit.

Although I had been preoccupied with my Election Duty for the last few weeks which I accomplished on 10th April (having reported at Centre at 3.50 a.m. and depositing the EVMs and documents by 1.00 a.m. on 11th April). Naturally I was tired like a dead soul. Hit the bed at 2.00 a.m. and woke up only in the afternoon. My limbs were now almost getting to its natural shape and strength. By 8.00 p.m. I was contemplating the idea of hitting the NH 1 (since the next 3 days were Public Holidays). The bike had been got serviced a few weeks ago so there ought to have been no problem on that account. Packed 2-3 pairs of clothes and some innerwear in the dickey. The battery of the camera was plugged to the socket for charging so had to wait for 2 hours for completing this process.

Took bath at 12.45 a.m. and hit the road by 1.00 a.m. (on 12th April, 2014) for this long pending trip. Would not take too much of your time Now . Just to mention that I was in Amritsar by 9.15 a.m. and spent the whole day and better half of the next day visiting Golden Temple (3 times), Jalianwala bagh and the Attari Border. Was back home by 10.00 p.m. on 13th April.

JUST TO MENTION : it is better to reach Attari Border which is 30 kms from Amritsar by 2.30 to 3.00 p.m. on weekends to get some comfortable space. There are proper arrangements for food and drinking water/soft drinks that too at subsidized rates (Of course it is a military zone).

    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

Sir, the pictures are fabulous. It would help us a lot if you put a little description before the picture mentioning what is being done by the soldiers.

          Thanks.

To describe each photo might not be possible as I am too busy in office, But here is what I can do : A detailed step by step account of the ceremony at one place for the benefit of one and all.

The beating retreat ceremony at Attari (Wagah) border is a joint function carried out by both the forces of India and Pakistan at sun set. The drill was planned, finalized and carried out by both countries from early 1970’s.

The spectators start arriving at the stadium after a simple frisking (camera, cellphone although there are no network signals, purse and cold drinks etc are allowed) by BSF soldiers (which is soon filled beyond its capacity of 6500 spectators) as early as 2.30 p.m. and the final ceremony starts at around 5.00 p.m. Till then the crowd is kept engaged in activities like singing of patriotic songs, Bhangra, Gidda, and other folk songs. BSF also hands over 6-7 Tricolour flags to the girls who run in formation of two towards the Gate and the crowd shouts slogans : Bharat Mata ki Jai, Hindustan Jindabad and Vande Martam. No other slogan is permitted there.

At 5.00 p.m. two female BSF soldiers start marching in well coordinated formation towards the Indian side of the Entry Gate and take position on each side facing each other near the gate. Another batch of two male BSF soldiers march towards the Gate and stand at attention on each side facing each other which is followed by 5-6 BSF soldiers who march in formation towards the Gate and stand at attention. Then the leader takes permission from its commandant to start the retreat ceremony. The Gate of the respective countries from each side is opened. One soldier from each side starts marching along the border line and stand attention close to each other. They shake hands and retreat to their respective positions. Gates are again closed. Two soldiers one after the another march towards the Gate and the gates are once again opened. One soldier each stands near the pole of respective flags and unwinds the rope and hands over the rope to its colleague standing opposite the pole. The 5-6 soldiers from each side move towards the gate and stand close facing each other without any eye contact and then take guards and hold the rifles against their chests. The Begul starts playing the tune on each side and the soldier holding the rope starts lowering the Tricolour flag slowly. Men in uniform solute the flag from their place. In a few moments the flag is folded properly and the soldiers start marching back towards the designated place (BSF office) carrying the folder flag on their arms. The BSF flag is also simultaneously removed and carried by another group of soldiers towards BSF Office. Then one soldier from each side marches towards the Border line and stands close to each other on the respective sides. They shake hands once again and retreat towards their respective places. The Gates are closed again for the day and the leader informs the Commandant that the ceremony has concluded.

Keep watching a lot of photographs yet to come.
