  • [Photo Feature]: NHT Southern Odyssey - 2013

    NHT Southern Odyssey - 2013

It’s exactly one year after which I am here to share this log about the splendid experience we had on our First ever long ride which lasted for 12 days and 4000+ kms of distance covered.

During the journey we had planned to pen down the experience just after the ride. But unfortunately non of us got much time to even start it.

So what brings me back and forces me to put up this photo feature???

Day before yesterday while browsing some of the logs on xBHP, I came across some rides covering Southern India which reminded me of our Journey. So here I am putting forth our experience of our Southern Odyssey - 12 Days of priceless memories and unmatched fun and experience!

    Hope you all like it!!!

    Prologue:

This is how it all started!!!

After all the fun that we had in 2012, there was one big ride that was on the cards and we were eagerly planning for the same. It was on Anjarle ride where we decided to hit South in 2013. Plans were in the making for quite some time but due to other priorities we were not quite able to chalk out any concrete plan. It was Neetesh’s Solo ride which inspired us.

Avinash and Pavan could not make it for the ride due to other priorities. So it was just the two of us – myself & Rohan. Neetesh had just returned back from his massive 8k+kms ride. But still he agreed to accompany us halfway till Ooty, after which he was supposed to return back home.

Kerala being my native place I had to pick up the places to be visitied and chalk out a plan. With two whole weeks at our disposal here is what we planned.

    Mumbai – Palolem – Manglore – Coorg – Ooty – Munnar – Trivandrum– Kanyakumari – Rameshwaram – Bangalore – Mumbai

Unfortunately at the end we had to exclude Rameshwaram from the itinerary and we left it for the next ride (God knows When! )
So excluding Rameshwaram the final plan was chalked out. Here's the day wise schedule that we followed.

    Day 01 – 07th June 2013 – Mumbai – Madgaon
    Day 02 – 08th June 2013 – Madgaon – Palolem
    Day 03 – 09th June 2013 - Palolem – Mangalore
    Day 04 – 10th June 2013 - Mangalore – Madikeri
    Day 05 – 11th June 2013 - Madikeri – Ooty
    Day 06 – 12th June 2013 - Ooty – Palakkad
    Day 07 – 13th June 2013 - Palakkad – Munnar
    Day 08 – 14th June 2013 - Munnar – Trivandrum
    Day 09 – 15th June 2013 - Trivandrum – Kanyakumari
    Day 10 – 16th June 2013 - Kanyakumari – Bangalore
    Day 11 – 17th June 2013 - Bangalore – Kolhapur
    Day 12 – 18th June 2013 - Kolhapur – Mumbai

Yeah! This plan looks a lot aggressive.
    All Ride and No Fun.
But considering the days we had and budget constraints and also the urge to reach the Southern Tip of India, this plan was what we followed.

So to summarize it all -
    Days: 12
    Total Distance Covered: 4087 kms
States we rode through: Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu

Beaches, Hill Stations, Tea Estates, Forest Reserves, 2 Lane Nightmares, 4 Lane Runways, Torrential Rains... etc etc... The trip had it all...

Thank you all for the kind words!!!

Day 0 and Day 1 follows!!!!

            Day 0
            Date
            June 06th 2013
            Day
            Thursday

So after a long day at work managed to wrap up things at office.
Out Of Office set for the next two weeks J.
            Weird questions by colleagues

            - Kaha ja raha hai??
            - Kaise ja raha hai?? Bike pe?????
            Pagal hai kya??
            - Kitne log hai?? Akele??? Ek bike pe ek hi banda? Petrol kitna kharch hoga… Pagal hogaya hai ye…
            - Achha Kerala ja raha hai na… Kele ke chipps zarur leke aana

After answering all these, I was finally on my bike and out of my office

Picked up my girl from office and left for home. It drizzled a bit in the evening making me far more restless for the upcoming two weeks of adventure. Tanked up on my war home and bid good bye to my girl for the next two weeks (Which obviously was not easy. Had to listen to a lot of sweet music for being away for two whole weeks)

Reached home by around 9. Saddle bags had to be loaded up. Small things here and there needed to be purchased. Went out for a small spin with the riding pants and boots borrowed from Avi. Perfect they were!

It was almost 1 AM when I went to sleep reminding myself that I had to wake up in the next two hours and embark on the ride of a lifetime.

And ohh yes!! Had to cover 650+ kms to reach Goa!

So it was Good Night and End of Day 0.

Day 1 starts in two hours!!!

            Day 1
            Date
            June 07th 2013
            Day
            Friday
            Mumbai c Madgaon
            Distance Covered - 650kms

After two restless hours of sleep alarm rings at 03:30 AM.
Called up Rohan and Neetu. They were already up and were getting ready for the day ahead.
Got ready and I was ready to roll!!!

Took blessings from my parents loaded the saddle bags and I was ready to embark on the ride of my lifetime.

            Starting Odos:

            Pulsar 180

            Yammie Fazer!!!

Left home at around 04:45 AM. We had decided to meet at our regular spot near Koparkhairne flyover. Reached the spot around 05:30 AM. Avi was already there with one of his colleagues to see us of. Rohan and Neeteesh reached in another 15mins.

            Some pics:

            Bikes Loaded Up!!!

            The three musketeers!!!

After a small chitchat and photo session we left at around 06:30. We decided not to take much breaks as we had quite a distance to cover and considering the two laned NH17 it was a bit tough task.

Took a small chai break at Wadhkal Naka and we planned our next halt at Kashedi top.

Reached Kashedi at 10. We had covered quite some distance from morning and hence decided to take some rest. After quick photo break and status update we were off again.

            Some Pics at Kashedi:

            Kashedi Top...

Crossed Chiplun at around 11:30. We were quickly covering the distance and decided to take lunch break some where near Ganpatipule.

Stopped for lunch at around 2. Had some tasty chicken and left. We had still about 400kms to cover before Palolem. It was bright and sunny without any signs of rains.

We reached near Lanja at around 4 when skies darkend up. Since the saddle and tank bags were not covered with rain covers took a short break for the same. Minuites after we stopped it started raining heavily. Somehove managed to cover the saddle bags and we left the place. Since it was the first rain and the divider markings on the road were freshly laid it was quite scary to ride. The rear tyre slipped couple of times but I somehow balanced myself. Since it was raining quite heavily we were riding at a very low pace.

Rohan was leading, I was in the middle with Neetesh tailing behind. Suddenly my front tyre slipped on loose mud, i tried to break lightly to balance myself but couldnt. Had a pretty bad crash, but thanks to the gears - My RJAYS Octane Jacket, Scoyco Riding Pants and RJAYS H2O Shoes (Borrowed from Avi) did not suffer any major injuries. I just suffered a slight bruise on my right knee.

But my bike suffered a bit. A bent leg guard and rear break lever. This was the second time the rear break lever was suffering. Got it repaired from a local grill wala shop who straightened the leg guard and break lever.

Though I did not suffer from any major injuries, the crash shattered my morale. There was a fear inside me on each and every turn that came ahead. That reduced our pace drastically. After all the two lane roads till Sawantwadi the all new 4 lane roads all the way till you enter Goa was quite refreshing to ride.

We entered Goa at around 7 PM. With heavy rains and city traffic the pace reduced and we were finding it a bit difficult to reach Palolem. We reached inside Goa from where Calangute was around 6kms. We thought of ending our day at Calangute but then decided to move ahead and try for Palolem. Next stop was Margao. On the way to Margaon I almost had a second crash but thanks to my stars I saved myself. Reached Margaon at around 10. Palolem was still good 50 kms away. We decided to end our day at Margaon. After a bit of search managed to get a hotel for 800 bucks. We were all super drenched.

I checked my bruise on the right knee which had turned a bit bad because of constant rubbing of the knee guards. Applied a bit of soframycin and went in search of Dinner. I was in no mood of having dinner with constant thoughts of the crash and doubting myself if I can go any further. Rohan was off the opinion that we should tour Goa for 5 days and leave South for next time. Neetesh told me to just sleep and we can plan the things next morning. That helped.

This brings an end to a pretty long Day 1!!! More of riding and hardly any pictures were captured.

More pictures to follow from Day 2 onwards!!

It was a Saturday and Rohan couldn't booze. So he was waiting for 12:00 AM which would allow him to booze. We took a short nap before heading for our night out.

Our session started at around 11:30 which continued till 5 in the morning. That was one hell of a time spent with the two of you. Many stories shared between the three of us. Will always remember that!!!

Enjoyed the view for some time and then resumed our journey. Next stop was supposed to be Murudeshwara where we planned to have lunch.

Reached Murudeshwara by around 5PM. The very sight of Lord Shiva statue was mesmerizing. Since we had our saddles to take care of we skipped the darshan and clicked some pics from outside. Had a late lunch and left for Mangalore.

                          Om Namah Shivaya!!!!

After a stomach full of vegetarian lunch we left as we had a decent distance left to be covered. Roads were good and moderate rains ensured that we could maintain a decent pace all through. Soon we reached the actual patch where we could see the beach next to the highway.

Due to rains and strong winds we decided to take some quick snaps using our mobiles and digicams. Also we had very limited time as we had to reach mangalore by around 10 or else we would not have got any food to eat. Some snaps from one of the most beautiful places I have ever come across.
