Re: NHT Southern Odyssey - 2013

    Day 4:

    Mangalore - Coorg

Mangalore to Coorg distance being the shortest of the last 4 days we decided to start a bit late. Saddled up and left the hotel by around 10. It was pretty hot outside. Fueled up and we were ready for the first planned destination in out Southern Odyssey.

Distance of just 150kms to be covered today. Little did we imaging what was stored for us on that day. As usual Rohan was leading with myself and Neeteesh behind. It was somewhere close to a place called Puttur when Rohan's rear tyre gave up. The puncture seal that was put in Goa came out and we were stranded in middle of a village. Moreover the rear tyre had developed cracks on side walls making it more prone to punctures. We managed to find a tyre repair shop nearby but the guy did not have rubber plugs for Tubeless tyres. Fortunately Neetesh was carrying it so we ourselves managed to fill some air and seal the puncture. We were informed that there is a MRF showroom in Puttur town about 4kms from that place. So we started for Puttur in search of MRF Showroom. Roads were getting freshly laid so it was full of gravel and stones. We somehow managed to reach Puttur which took some good 30 minutes.

Puttur being a small town en route Coorg we were quite surprised to find showrooms of all the major tyre brands. Ceat, MRF, Bridgestone and what not. We went straight to MRF showroom but we disaster struck when we were told that MRF REVZ was currently out of stock. Coorg being a good 100 kms from here, we were not sure as to how we would be able to make it. The attendent was good enough and he suggested us to try our luck at another shop called Arvind Tyre shop nearby. Going by the confidence with which the attendant asked us to go to this Arvind tyre shop we went thinking that it would be some multi-brand tyre shop. About 500 meters ahead we come across a small roadside shop, not bigger than any small road side tapri with the name Arvind Tyre Shop and spares. With no hope of finding a new MRF REVz Rohan went and asked the guy if he had a new tyre for MRF Fazer. And to our biggest shock the guy went inside his small storage room and came out with a brand new MRF REVz tyre. We were like what the heck!!! This guy had the tyres which even the MRF showroom didn't have. Surprised but happy we went and got the job done from nearby mechanic. Lost some good one and half hour in all these but we were chilled as we had just 100 more kms to cover.

One of the many Punctur patches on his old tyre. That tyre was a complete mess.

The road ahead was State Highway 80. Freshly laid tarmac smooth as butter. Also with slight drizzle it was a ride to remember. Halted at a roadside hotel to have some tea and refreshment.

Rohan probably could not contain the happiness inside himself :P

    Beautiful weather and surroundings

We reached Madikeri town by evening 7. It was already dark and one guy on the road approched us asking if we were looking for a room. He took us to a bunglow where the owner stayed on the ground floor and he let us use the entire first floor which was a huge 2bhk for mere 1000 bucks. The rooms were literally HUGE!! We had 2 huge bedrooms with two double beds in each room at our disposal. But given the darpok's we are we decided to stay put in one of the bedrooms. Coorg being a pretty cold place there were no fan's in the room. The owner also allowed to park our bikes inside his compound

Neetesh and Rohan were sharing one double bed and I was alone on the adjoining bed.

    Rohu : Susu...
    Me : Haa bol..
Rohu : Wo darwaza band kar na bahar se light aa raha hai..
    Me : Haa ruk...

I get up and half close the door. Almost half slept when lights go off and the door starts squeeking. That shared the shit out of us.

    Rohu : Susu..
    Me : Haa bol be
Rohu : Achha dekh tere baju me kaun hai...

****KK!!!! Shit scared I jump from one bed to another bed in between rohu and neetu.. Follwed by lot of gaali galoch!!!

With no electricty.. complete dark... thnuder and lightning outside... squeeking door!!! Nothing less than a horror movie. All three of us were literally scared that we didnt move for the entire night till dawn. So here we were the three of us squeezed on one double bed, in an accomodation with 2 Bed rooms & 4 double beds.

Next day we woke up at around 6AM and went straight to the terrace. The climate out there was simply beautiful.

We had some locations in mind for the day before left for Ooty. Neetesh was supposed to leave back from Mumbai as he had some earlier family commitments. We had heard of this place called Thala Kaveri - the origin of Kaveri river. It was close to 40kms from our hotel. All the popular tourist destinations are pretty far away from the main town. We decided to first visit Tala Kaveri and then if possible visit other locations.

It was a mixed bag of good and bad country roads all the way up to this beautiful temple. Inside the temple there is a small pond which is said to be the origin of Kaveri River. From there you have to climb some 150-200 steps to reach the hill top. Unfortunately it was completely under clouds and we couldnt see anything beyond 10-15 metres. But it surely was one hell of an experience.

Photography was not allowed inside the temple. So captured one pic from outside the temple.

    The three musketeers!!!

    Beautiful internal roads:

We returned back to our hotel by around 11 AM. We were already behind schedule. Neetesh was planning to reach somewhere near Kolhapur and our destination for the day was Ooty.

The awesome and spacious 2bhk homestay.

    Life Savers!!

We geared up and left Coorg by around 1 PM with some sweet & horror memories.
