  • to the mountains- the calling

Before I begin my trip log and my experiences about the same, let me introduce myself & my co rider who went through the odds to
travel the mountains in the rainy season.
I am Anand Roy, a commuter by origin taking off to small short trips once in a while, this trip being the first ever trip of my life (in bike)
Rahul Dutta, another co rider, residing in Bangalore often participates in short trips in the place of residence.
We both met up in a local gathering of Riders from different parts of city & became friends (but we took our time to develop the friendship)

This is a blog about a trip to the following places

    KALIMPONG
    DELO VIEW POINT
    LAVA
    GANGTOK
    SEVEN SISTER WATERFALL
    NATHU LA
    SUKHIA PUKHRI
    ITIHARI IN NEPAL
    DHARAN IN NEPAL
    BHETEDAR IN NEPAL
    NAMCHE IN NEPAL

Here you go, every link making the trip possible. :-
This trip I am dividing into three parts for the ease of sharing pictures, & posting as well

    PART 1

2 month before the trip 1 month to go for the trip7 days before the trip

Meanwhile, my exams ended, Rahul arrived Howrah station with two duffle bags, (a skinny figure emerged from the gush of of people shooting here & there), yes, I was there to receive him,< after all he was the only soul who was, finally, going for the trip along with me>, apart from Rc who was still nodding.

A days or two passed & my exams ended. We had to take our bikes for a combined service.

Morning was followed by the day which was concluded by the evening along with the service of our bikes including the cleaning of Head of the both bikes, tappet adjustment, engine oil change, Chain lube, clutch assembly change.

TOOLS WE TOOK FOR THE TRIP

Hence it is handy to carry-

    2) An Foot/air pump to fill up that extra psi when required
    3) Tool kit containing allen keys, screw driver, etc
    4) Basic Food rations like cakes, biscuits, cookies ( trust me for a student like me it saves extra cost on breakfast or evening snacks)
    5) Cellotapes ( the broad ones), try carrying two pair of shoes if riding in rainy season, gumboots if you can manage to ride with them, Raincoats.

JUNE 16 The day of throttle

Ride started at around 5.30 am in the morning, We had somewhat, a deep 6 hour sleep. (no, Im joking, he had a snoring 6 hour sleep while I was just trying to keep my eyes closed, I guess that is normal for an abnormally excited stubborn guy like me)..
Well, sooner than we realized, the highway lay straight in front of us, but we decided to take it slow & cover till Silliguri (around 636kms)

We decided to divide the initial leg of the trip to Siliguri in 6-7 breaks with a 10 minute break every 100 kms .

The first 100-120 kms on the National Highway was a bliss ( our plan was to take nh till Burdwan, then proceed towards NH34 & reach directly to Siliguri via Malda).

..ride ride ride.. Ahhh, Mangoes, Mangoes, stop stop ( showed him that punch up in the air sign signaling him to stop), he did stop, well !! followed by a round of modern slangs, followed by another set of local Bengali ones, which was okay, as I slanged him back & showed him I know some Judo moves so ,huh, (basically it was fatigue, dehydration getting to us even though the last day I & him almost gulped water like a camel in a desert) It was 6pm already, I was so amazed to see so many mangoes, the scent, the trees, the greenery amidst which we side stood our bikes while I purchased some 3 kgs of mangoes for rs10 per kg ( yeah see, why I got 3 kgs?)
We made a couple of calls to our folks, started our ride again not realizing that the really really bad stretch of roads were yet to come :P J (the roads showing us the evil grin)
Ahh, what the hell, anyone except the one writing this must be bored by now- here you go some pictures of the mangoes & the size of them & lot of them below :P

Moving on now, the sunset that followed as we escaped Malda towards the new roads (for us)

Rode another 100 or 130 odd kms & the night set in, it was really dark. & this was by the way also my first night ride ever.
I was getting exhausted slowly, actually both of us were, it had been more than 14 hours of riding & we had just crossed Malda, My back started aching, stomach also started rumbling so we decided to take a 40-50 min break around 10 pm or so, near a Indian Oil petrol Pump, I decided to take out the cupcake that my Mom had given me in abundance ( like I had 20 of them :P) I had one & tossed one to him, then after sharing another piece of chocolate do-nut (you have no idea how awesome It felt, the soft bread being crunched between my teeth, the flavor of chocolate mixing with the over drooling saliva, you have no Idea what that do-nut made me feel that day, we sipped on maza along with it) I sprayed Volini on my neck, shoulders.

    Me with the Do-nut
& yes my front indicators also broke off while leaving that day so no indicator on the front side right

The huge traffic near Dalkola I think, it was a check post

We started Riding again, now sleep became an issue, I & Rahul both of us were getting tired, to such an extent that riding even in decent pitch roads with small sized craters (mind it it was awesome roads for us as we covered hell compared to this) felt as if a burden, so we decided to pull of near a small highway type town, there was a small tool, I just got off my bike, lay down on the table & went out for half an hour, Life never felt so good after that sleep, Rahul in the meanwhile was looking at his phone when I got up being bit by figure nail sized mosquitoes; weirdly he was very understanding & encouraged me to move on. We did, it started raining now, but we rode & rode. By the time it was almost morning at around 4 am, we reached our destination Siliguri. I had arranged for a check in, from a common friend, several futile calls at early hours had no response, so we moved further to bagdora in search of a resting place, alas we found none.!!!!

I added lets head to Kalimpong directly as we are feeling refreshed (and we were) & check in then & there only.
He was too tired to make a decision so he agreed (this chap had experience of mountain riding in Nandi hill in Bangalore on several occasions while I had none)

    RIDE TO KALIMPONG

A monastery near bagdora, actually while exiting bagdogra towards Kalimpong

This picture is taken from Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary where I stopped my bike to take a snap ()

This picture taken from a bridge (Sevoke Bridge)

The above image is of a different bridge.
    Now,
We both started riding again to the blissful of greenery everywhere. I was being blasted with so much of green from everywhere like the plasma gun blast off emw in Star trek movies, & honestly every such sight made me refreshed every second. (before this Iv never seen any mountains as such so yes, this was my first time experience in the mountains too)
    The mountain roads started
I was riding fine till now,

We just dozed off till the evening refreshed, we headed to the market to get dinner.

(*well the next day we did change the room to a better room with a fantastic view* for rs 500)

              PART 2

              DELO VIEW POINT
The Following day we decided to do local sight seeing so Delo view point was suggested to us by some local guys which was some 6 or 7 kms from where we were staying, filled up our tanks & tyre pressure checked & left.

While going up the hills towards Delo view point, my carburrator started leaking oil from the drain pipe, we stopped,
I called up a mech in Kolkata, came to know that dirt in the carb was the reason for the problem, I sat, opened carb from the bike, opened the internals carb & cleaned the main jet, pilot jet, the outer body, etc with a brush & carb cleaner I was carrying along.

We headed to Lava first, realizing more steep climb & thus the rpm needle playing pingpong with our patience, coming down to 1000rpms,, & then stopping to a halt
out of nowhere due to altitude sickness or due to lack of air in the high altitude.
,,we had to increase the idle screw bit by bit every time we made a steep climb or if we were riding through the clouds, amidst dence deep beauty.

Roads to Lava & LoleGaon (Day 3) & REACH SIKKIM
there was a small landslide a few days before we came near the stretch so the roads were in terrible condition towards Lava, We reached Lava by around 11.45am, & then Lolegaon by 12.30pm, then started our journey towards Gangtok, where we had to return the same roads but It was downhill, by this time, I was more or less aquinted
with the hilly roads & now instead of being afraid of it, I was loving every mile of it. Return ride, was leading us to Rungpo Forest, then Enter Sikkim, We crossed the forest by 6 or 6.30 pm, it was almost dark & gush of water flowing from a distance could be heard clearly, then was when we realized that Rungpo is near. We crossed the border & were amazed by the roads of Sikkim State, Wide, Not that steep as the roads to Kalimpong or Delo, but the experience was just phenomenal climbing into the mountains in Sikkim. By the time we entered Sikkim It was already dark, we were riding by the twists & turns that went as & where the river Tista went, it was asif the roads were holding the river by the hands while traversing through the mountains climbing higher & higher.

PROCEDURE FOR OBTAINING PERMIT IN GANGTOK

In the evening we met up with an Amazing person Manish Gurung sir.. Respect to that person & his outlook of life, he did suggest us however not to go for Gurudongmar as the rain would have made the roads worse.
Plus while gossiping & chatting we realised that the time for dinner, all the shops have by far been closed (in mountains everything closes by 8pm max)
So Manish da, invited us over (me Rahul, & Rohit-who arranged the room for us) for dinner, showed us his Riding gears. In short That person,
welcomed us as if we were his family members, shared stories with us about his life, bikes & his passion (this is one of the reasons why I
love travelling -meeting new people, amazing people)

              PART 3

              NATHU LA

              ROADS TO NATHU LA
We didnt really have any pro camera to take the snaps, neither do I know how to take good pictures but pictures to me are
just a fraction of a memory of the panoramic view I saw there.

Coming to the roads, only one suggestion to all my brothers out there, Rainy season isnt the best time to visit Nathu la, as maximum places are
muddy, post landslide, sometimes the roads ARE even closed, there was a small stetch where there were rock chunks on the roads where only vehicle could pass through that turn, It was difficult, it seemed impossible for us but half way accross, we realised we can do it inspite of rain, fog, mud making our distance tough but we pushed ahead, slowly. There were spots on the ride towards &return from Nathu La, where the turns were very sharp while the roads were narrow, muddy, as in a small mistake or a twitch of accelaration would throw you approximately 14000feet in the air where only clouds would be the witness of your fall. So I was sweating in my headgear, while
my feet froze as somehow the water managed to enter through the plastic entering my feet. There was also a ditch of water which was upto my ankle lenght while returning
Rahul crossed, I also crossed. But the moment I came out, the bike came to a halt, I tried to start it it but Alas, the bike wouldnt just start, (I knew exactly what went wrong, my K&n soaked water in the fabric resulting in clogging of the filter., So the situation was, my bike was stuck in the middle of nowhere,
Rahul looked at me while I looked at my bike( I didnt wanted to face the dreaded face of Rahul at that time). At that time two thoughts came in my mind
              1) I will have to leave my bike & be a pillion to Rahul (ahh, i wouldnt have left it anyway)
              2) `try & fix it somehow, wait for it to get dry

What I did- I increased my idle to 5 turns, put the choke on, started kicking till I was sweating like I was dipped in a swimming pool using crane service.
Nothing happened, I was tired, we parked our bikes in the side, I went over the ledge overlooked the valley floor, was awestruck with the height & sight of such a beautiful valley floor, trees below & ofcourse clouds .. I somehow forgot my bike wasnt working. I returned from the ledge after 10 minutes, while Rahul puffed
two cigarettes, I started the choke again, reduced the idle to 3 turns from what it was. Gave a hard kick & voila, my Race concepts exhaust could be heard in the
Chinese base camp (just kidding), yeah, but it was loud, possibly because there were no other vehicles while we got stuck. well, we started our journey
back home, in the next 5 hours we returned back, came across numerous waterfalls.

              GURUDONGMAR
We decided not to go to Gurudongmar as the roads according to the locals were not even there, plus it was raining heavily so we decided to bunk it for the
              next time.

                  SUKHIA PUKHRI
The following morning we left for Nepal, reached the border town called SUKHIA PUKHRI via GHUM, the whole town was engulfed in clouds.
It was cold. Two thick blankets with soups in our hands & the gossip about our lives made us through the night.

the previous night we couldnt have food as we entered the town late(ITIHARI)
the next morning Rahul had 100 degrees fever, we planned to visit Bhetedar previously,a scenic place which comes after Dharan.
I got him medicines, chowmene, water, maaza. We waited till 12 for his fever to come down, it did, but he decided not to go as the following
day we were to return back to Kolkata. He asked me to visit the place alone if I wanted to.
I realized Rahul was doing better & had no fever, so I asked the hotel guy to come to his need if required. I left for
BHedETar, It was again a scenic place with mystical viewsights. Reached BhedETar, was welcomed by Mr Vishnu who was
the president of the accociation of hotels, we had tea together, he also advised me to visit this place called
NAMCHE, where there is a small house called SPIRIT OF THE PLACE,
It is believed by the locals that when people die their spirits reside on this mountain house.
I reached the place, parked my bike reached the top with the help of an old man who helped me in the journey of climbing up the mountain
, he also showed me around the Spirit house, said he will also reside their after his death, & that all reside here only.
We sat near the ledge of the mountain for sometime, where I could see the most mystical sight of my life, the enormous ranges of the himalayas
lay right in front of my eyes. I was so mesmerized by the whole sight,
( the whole conversation took place in hindi, for this forum I am sticking to english)
I spelled out "God, are you there, it is so beautiful>?"
Jagat Bahadur Dadaji replied " God, yes God is there".
Anand- (I was amazed with his interest in the question) "" really, how do you define God then?"
                  Jagat Dadaji- "see below"
Anand-"what the deep ledge leading to death??"
Dadaji-"No you stupid(he said gadha), that small flower" (he pointed to a small tiny pink flower, then he pointed his fingur to the ant who was minding his own busy business, then the rhododendron tree, the trees on our backs, the iron seat we were sitting on, the spirit of the place, the mountains))
                  Anand-(abit confused)"okay what?"
Dadaji- "the things i Pointed & everything you can see around is God"

I was shut, my mouth was wide open, as before I came to know he was a 70 year old man, who had never had the luxury of going to school or having books,
It was as if all the right reason for it to be the last day of my trip, a true spiritual ending,
but being a man, i was greedy for I wanted to know more or even test if he knew more of the wisdom thoughts, I asked again, foolishly
"so then, how to be a big man" As in how should i become a baara admi"

Dadaji-Looked in the sky, getting lost amidst the clouds, looked at me, took my hands in his & semi hugged me (no Im not joking, he did all this, and smiled
& I truely felt as if I knew this guy) & said, "see that mountain is big, the Mount Everest is big, you want to be big like that,
I understand, but if you realize it is very high, & very few people reach there, right??// I nodded.
"Dont be a Big man," he continued "for a big man is approached by few, & he cant see whats going below his nose, so big man, is always concerned
with himself, he is selfish & always stands alone, remember that"
I was nodded again as I couldnt understand what & how was he speaking so well
Dadaji continued -"dont be a big man, be a great man, look at the valley floor, (he pointed, a small stream was flowing through that valley floor),
Be like that valley floor, see it is low & firm, why?, so that the river flow though it, I mean if you be a valley floor which is in the plains, the river of knowledge will
flow through you, you will be a wise & knowledgeable man, & slowly with your hard work be a great man, you understand?""

                  You do understand I hope
(for I certainly did & returned back home for it all seemed like a dream to me although it wasnt, I had the pictures with me)

I will end my trip blog here for I dont believe it deserves any better ending.

(on our return trip we took the Bihar Purnia route back to Kolkata where the fatigue had already got the best of me & hence we stopped numerous times, slept in unknown junctions & random road sides, even in my own bikes, after we parked it on the far side of the roads, away from traffic, Well, Rahul had fever inspite he pushed on, helped me move ahead with short breaks in between till we were back home.. dozing of to a deep sleep)

Awesome narration and equally tantalizing captures. The Fazers look great (read big bike), considering the fact that they share the same engine with FZ. Also, the pic with the Argentine flag deserves a mention - my fav. pick.

Yup brother, its a mesh seat cover...where somehow the air manages to keep the bum cool (atleast i felt it while riding) plus its a bit comfortable riding around in that. Basic principle of its working is that between the mesh & the seat a sequence of springs are there forming the flow of air in the air pockets...
It took my friend around inr 1200 for the same, he got it from yamaha showroom in bangalore.
