This ride is all about Lassi, Butter and food all the time, we never had this much butter in four days in our entire life

July 2014 - Just after some 15 days of our Mana ride I was searching for next destination on the net, suddenly I saw someone from my friend list posted a snow picture of Sach Pass on FB, where he was riding with one of his friend, I saw it once and decided to go there and next I moment called to Ashish (Fellow rider)- Hey Ashish good news, we are going to Sach Pass, when ever our office & pocket will allow, lets meet up Dhaba this Sunday to discuss.

Till the ride time all the discussion about Sach Pass was going on between us, meanwhile we met our that friend also who posted that picture on FB of Sach Pass.

15 September 2014 – I called up Ashish, Hey Ashish so we are the only two for the ride, I am planning to apply leaves in advance, Ashish – One of his friend is also interested to come along with us and it is going to be his first ride on hills, I was like , I am creating a whatsapp group for all discussion and will add suspected rider also, Me – Ok.
After few hours we five was on the whats app group and discussion was going on about stuff, route & permits.
Meanwhile I applied for the leaves and got approved after few days, Ashish don’t need to apply for the leaves, as now he is his own boss and going to be approve others leave soon

Just before one week of our ride, we both desperately searching for route, weather, stuff to carry, prepare the bike and all that planning and couldn't concentrate on our work. Till now we are the only three riders for the ride. We asked some people about route and conditions for Sach, But every one from everywhere said maximum complete the ride in September and even if you want to go don’t do it after 15^th October, I saw a log on some other website of Sach Pass also, they were also suggesting to not go there in October.
Two days before the ride while checking the weather of all our route, I got a persons number who runs a business of camping in Sach Pass in summers and placed in Dal Housie, I called him and asked about the situation in Sach, he said seasons first snow fall has already started & Sach is closed and you can maximum go till Bhairgarh (Some 60-70kms before Sach), we asked some people on FB also, they suggested not to do this in October, but Ashish & Me decided that we will cruise till where ever possible and be safe always. As you guys know if you had planned a ride 3-4 months before, how difficult it is to postpone/cancel, even at that time heavy tension was going on India-Pak border so we had to keep an eye there also, who knows what ever can happen between India & Pak.

A night before the ride I called up @Ashish Sahay & asked about whether how many of his friend are joining us for ride, he said we are total number of four rider going to Sach Pass. So now Me (Hero Hunk), Ashish (Yamaha Fazer), Vijay (Honda Unicorn) and Rohit (Bajaj Pulsar 150) are final for the ride.

We planned different-2 route for heading & returning, for heading we selected a route where two Dams (Bhakra Nangle Dam & Shah Nehar Barrage lake Dam) were coming in-route, none of us never gone through the wall of Dam, so we decided to reach Dal Housie first day though this route.

Day 1 – The leaving time for the ride was 4AM sharp, meeting point (Punjabi Bagh Fly Over) was near to my house so I reached on time and got to know that Ashish & Rohit is still waiting for Vijay in South Delhi (I really cant bare people those who does not value time ), I waited for an hour while desperately waiting to start the ride, finally some how they reached to meeting point an hour late and we started riding to our first hault Karnal (150kms away), after completed some 10 kms we got to know that Ashish’s Fazer rear tyre is flat, we was all like WTH, then we searched for puncture wala as we was in the Delhi till that time, got the puncture repaired and we again got late another 30 minutes, we took a long breath and started for the ride, properly lid Delhi roads was looking beautiful, everything becomes beautiful if you are going for a ride
We decided that me (Vinay) will lead, second is Rohit, Vijay will be on third and Ashish will sweep, Soon we was on Panipat toll fly over and boy o boy that butter smooth road, we was feeling the immense grip, properly lid road, not a single inch bump on the entire almost 4-5 kms long flyover. In this regard NH 1 is good all the way, as we decided we crossed Karnal in some 90 minutes and stopped for breakfast on a dhaba and we welcomed with some 5-6 small puppies under our chairs, we got out stomach full with butter Paratha's and left from dhaba, it feels very nice when some 4-5 bikers fully geared, riding back to back in discipline, giving proper turn signals, roaring between cars & trucks, we keep checking the GPS for route and at some 10 AM we reached at the point where we had to check the route to skip the Chandigarh city to save time from city traffic, took few pictures and started riding back, but we missed that point where we had to skip the main Chandigarh city and the reason was that Ashish & Vijay found a beautiful lady in Hundai I20 at 110-120kmph, Damm it took 2 hour for us to come out from Chandigarh city traffic, Just a question here whether it is illegal to switch on headlight in day in Chandigarh?

Now the temperature rose and riding comfort level started decreasing we have to reach Bhakra Nangal Dam as soon as possible, roads was in good shape, at around 1PM we stopped for lunch, where we can eat as much as possible food in Rs. 60 and we ordered Lassi as well as we was in Punjab how can we miss Lassi, dhaba wala given us a salty Lassi even after we ordered sweet Lassi ,we told him to give us sweet Lassi and he mixed the sugar in same salty Lassi and given us, for me it was so yuck, I never drink that kind of horrible Lassi.

After we spent some time there with our full stomach ride started again to our first Dam visit, in some 1 hour we reached to Nangal where we have to visit Bhakra Dam, went to take permits, it was some 15 kms far from the city, we took our permits and started riding to Dam and missed a important turn which we was going to DAM after some 15kms Vijay said we have completed the said destination according to permit provider person, then we asked some local their he directed us to right location, but still after searching the place we could not reach to DAM, again some other guys told us to go from somewhere else, after some 1 hour we reached correct gate of DAM from where distance was still some 5-7kms, security guard warned us to do not take any pictures of DAM other wise they will cease our mobile phones/cameras, so we could not take any pictures of DAM, as we enter to DAM area they didn’t allow us to go main DAM wall, we was like WTH , there was already not a single person and why they are allowing anyone to go to DAM wall, now we are totally pissed off and decided not to waste more time and start riding to our destination, it was already 3PM, we again started riding, the road quality was amazing, hairpin curves and newly built roads all the way in between the forest, but at some point there was some animals on the middle of road like cows, dogs and donkeys, even I was crashing into a buffalo once, by thee time it was almost 5:30PM and it was started dark, we put our all effort to reach till Talwara city some 120kms before Dal Housie and decided to stay in Talwaraa only, as some locals warned us on road condition and suggested not ride in dark, so we decided to stay in Talwara for the first night, we found decent room in Rs.800 and day wrapped with lots of butter in Dinner after that we had our Lassi

Day 2 (17^thnd Dam is coming just after some 20kms, we all were so excited because just after the DAM, hills are also coming, we decided to have breakfast at our next stop to save time, but we could not cover more than 5 kms with empty stomach and stopped for our breakfast and bad luck we only got tea there and nothing to eat, so we moved afcourse after having tea



Soon after some nice curves, DAM was in front of us, here also we had to take permits, paid RS. 10 for each bike, given all the details of bike & rider and guard warned us not stop on the DAM wall and do not take any photograph and I found myself riding at 15kmph to enjoy the scene, man that was super duper marvelous I never been to a DAM this much close, stored clean, blue water looks like a sea because it was already sun rising from there, it was looking fantastic, we crossed the DAM and found a decent Dhaba for our breakfast after some 50 kms, as it was Punjab and Rohit is a Punjabi boy so he use to mix with everyone, whether he is hotel attendant or a Dhaba wala and we got to know that milk is not reached to that small city till that time due to that tea is not available anywhere, so we ordered chole bhature & burgers for without tea, when we start eating those burgers butter was literally coming out like hell (it was actually not a burger, it was a mix of chole, alloo ki tikki, many chutnies and lots of butter under the two Pao) after our stomach get full we decided not to stop next 100kms because it was already 10AM.
Roads was in good condition we found a shortcut as well to save some 15kms and keep checking our route on Nokia Maps, offline maps of Nokia is almost accurate and available all the time because battery draining is not a problem at all, after rode some 110 kms on hills we stopped at a place and took some off road pictures.

















after to cross that patch it was almost 1PM and we decided to skip lunch to save the time and had some snacks only with tea and discussed about route with locals here also one person suggested us not go beyond Bhairgarh, we started riding again soon we reached to same road which was coming from Pathankot towards Dal Housie, we was waiting for the first petrol pump of Himachal Pradesh and we got one, IMO Rs. 4/Per liter is too much when you are almost empty and gonna have a full tank, we tanked up enjoying the very good roads towards Dal Housie took some pictures there, we reached Dal Housie at around 2PM and saw a army school well clean, managed properly, I cant show you the actual beauty of that school because pictures was prohibited there as well by army, but we took some at allowed area.



















In Dal Housie after to eat some chocolate & chips we started our journey to Switzerland it was just 26 kms from Dal Housie and we thought we will cover this in less than one hour, but roads was in very bad shape less light even that was a mid noon sunny day, all the way covered by heavy tree and no traffic not a single person and it was so cold I think some 5 degree in day , while struggling with roads and cold we reached to Switzerland finally after 90 minutes, actually city name is Khajjiar but it is offacially announced Switzerland of India by govt. of Himachal Pradesh and it is a honey moon destination (I feel so), ok, we had our lunch here with fantastic view took some pictures and started our ride to reach nearest city to Bhairgarh as much as possible.











I must say there was no straight road whether it is extreme steep or extreme slop, you will find youself in first gear all the time in 3-4K RPM on steep and to use engine braking on slop and roads was also not so good, we crossed few mountains, while locals are killing their splendors with tripling on those roads, wonder how they are stopping their bikes on slopes , after to complete some 100kms in 3 hour we reached to Sultanpur before dark and some 180kms before from Bhairgarh, we got a nice place with safe bike parking for the night and as soon we switched on the LCD TV in the room we found India-West indies match is going on, which is happening in Mohali and India is batting as it is only 6:30PM we could not sleep so we enjoyed the first innings of Indian batting and then went out to explore the city, first we gone to have some snacks bread butter, butter Pao and again burgers with tea, it was a kind of big city, as we can see some big brand showroom like Maruti Suzuki, Yamaha, LG and lots of mechanic shops of big commercial vehicle, there was a cross river bridge where we enjoyed a lot because it was moving like hell when a vehicle cross it, we started feeling hungry again then we eat peanuts, some sweet like Gulabjamun, 1 liter of real mix fruit juice and then went for dinner in nice restaurant , we had veg & non veg thali and veg Biryani with curd, I had eaten maximum in my life in a day and we could not complete the Biryani so get it packed for next day, had our Lassi and walked back to our room it was almost one kms away from the restaurant, Damm none of us able to walk due over eating, it was around 10PM we reached our bed, we decided to leave 5AM next morning in any case, because we have to reach at least Pathankot 3^rd day while returning after to complete Sach Pass (Some 400kms total on hills).

Day 3 (18^th Oct 14) – So we woke up at 4AM as decided and got ready to move by 5AM from hotel, and suddenly when we just leaving we got to know that Rohit’s Pulsar handle is moving like hell, it was so loose and we can’t start riding, so now the search started to look for a mechanic because we tried tightening the screw through available stuff in bike tool kit and we got late due to this after to search almost 90 minutes we managed to woke up a local mechanic and he tightened the handle, it was 6:30AM and we was in the situation whether we have to go for Sach or not in such a short time, somehow we decided lets go till Bhairgarh and there we will decide to go or not, luckily roads was in mint condition for some 70-80kms so maintained 40kmps speed in hill and able to cover the distance on time, at around 8:30AM we stopped for our breakfast and the last night biryani and some butter bread with tea as nothing else was available, now we took a long breath start riding again for our destination, in between the route we witnessed some beautiful waterfalls, rivers, mountains covered with snow and some really bad off road patches.





We keep continue riding towards our destination by asking the route by locals, everyone from every village starring us like aliens, after some 140kms it was almost straight after that we witnessed a complete extreme steep for almost 40 kms till Bhairgarh, where we was one first & second gear only, we reached Bhiargarh at around 11:30AM and where we stopped by local police & army to take permits to go beyond, they noted down our every single information saw our ID proofs as well. we took awesome pictures en route Bhiargarh.

From here we can feel the coldness of ice and police warned us about temperature & weather conditions beyond this point also told us that Sach Pass is closed officially by gov and there no phone network available and shutdown by gov only Army signals are working so whatever happens beyond this point no one will be there to help you guys, we took a deep breath started riding and then rods was completely gone with 45 degree steep off road, I never seen such off road in my life each & every stone is pointed very sharp if any of got any puncture their its gonna become impossible to go anywhere, our bikes was the only friend of us, it was some 20kms Satrundi from Bhairgarh and then some 40kms is the Sach Pass from Satrundi, Ok we was continuously in 1 gear only, I don’t know about others but I was constantly doing 5-10 kmph in 1^st gear at 5-6K RPM air was going less every meter and we can see that mountains are plain and there is no tree or nothing on mountains which means they covered by snow.





Now the temperature & oxygen level went furiously down, suddenly most extreme thing came in front of me the frozen slug, we decided to go one by one if some would stuck their so that we will able to help him, I was the fourth and DAM!!, when I was started bike was already at 6-7K RPM and 1^st gear I had nothing else to do with bike power, I was stuck in slug bike was unable to climb and getting off due to immense pressure on the engine and less air, I only able to cross that steep slug when me myself take off from bike that was also in 1^st gear.



Finally crossed the slug & we witnessed our first patch of snow under our legs and we keep moving slowly suddenly Rohit had his first fall on the ice, because it was a fresh snow and temperature was zero almost and ice was so strong like hell, Ok I helped Rohit to let come aside to the road pulled his bike, after some 5 minutes we was ready to go ahead while we was very careful because of snow I was the fourth and after some 100metres I had my first fall suddenly while accelerating bike went left I fall, when I tried to stand I cud not because it was so slippery, I again tried but could not petrol was coming out from the petrol tank so I switched off the petrol nob while lay down on ice and decide to understand the situation and then try to stand (sound funny, but one cant imagine the situation until you will be in, It was my first time riding/fall on snow) after some five minutes I made some scratches on the snow through my shoes and able to stand and till that time others also came up to help me, we again somehow able to cover 50 meters and then a extreme steep came with full of snow where none of us able to go beyond because bike completely loosed its traction, we decided not go beyond and we could only go few meters ahead by walking and falling many times on the snow, we took lots of pictures & enjoyed lot.











































Some army guys also told us to b aware of snow & rock fall due to that last year their one of JCB also loosed its traction on ice and went off from road, driver was dies in that incident and JCB crushed under mountains, I was just fearing that how we going to go back to Bhairgarh, then we decided to scratch some ice till the point bikes will get traction and we took our bike one by one by all four of us, I made video of that also, we crossed the ice while returning now it was a challenge for us to control the bike to downhill, see it becomes very-very difficult when there are stone and bike going down himself you engine braking and front brake but while that your front tyre got lock many times when it bounce between the stones and you even cant release the brake even my rear tyre got lock many time as I kept it on first gear and bike was doing constant 6-7K RPM somehow we managed to cross that patch and reached to Bhairgarh







We got the tarmac, now it was almost 1:30PM, we decide to reach at least Dal Housie or Pathankot if possible so that we can start to Delhi from there, there was not much we did just constantly riding & riding till 6PM we had only lunch during this period, now it was dark and everybody was so tired of riding since last 12 hour with many falls, in the dark we decided to not beyond 30kmph and set out position suddenly what see our is third DAM and a raw tunnel we was so excited to cross that tunnel we took some pictures there now it was almost 7:30PM we almost reached to Banikhet some 6-7kms before Dal Housie, we decided to stay here got our most luxurious room in 1500 bucks with twin bed for the first time, we went to had our dinner in a local dhaba got some sweets and went to sleep.

Day 4 (19^th Octo 14) – I must say riding with good road conditions in dark is real fun, properly lid roads through your headlight looks awesome and when you see in rear view mirror it’s all dark, look little furious some times as I was sweeping last day after the dark, we took some pictures as well.

Next everyone wanted to reach home as soon as possible, we woke up at around 7:30 in our three start room, I switched on the TV and found it’s a GP Sunday and MotoGP 2 was live, made my day after to witnessed KTM won it we left from Banikhet.



we was some 600 kms away from Delhi, it was a really cold place, we decided to have breakfast after some 30 kms to save time and started kissing our foot pegs on some 70-80kms remaining hills, as Ashish on fazer want to have maximum fun with his much capable Fazer on turns, told us that he will meet us at Pathankot, till that time me & Vijay was ahead so we stopped at decent Dhaba for breakfast and waiting for Ashish & Rohit, when they arrive after some 20 minutes we got a bad news that while giving side to a four wheeler Rohit skidded in gravel on a turn, thank god it was not a big accident and he got only few scratches on his hand and legs, his helmet & riding jacket managed the rest perfectly, after to have Paratha’s & butter and first aid for Rohit we stared to Pathankot, at around 12:30PM we crossed Pathankot and zooming 90-100kmph on plains, because roads was pretty empty, keep continuing with this me & Rohit got our chain lubed and tighten in between and at around 2:30PM we stopped at a Dhaba for our lunch with twin Lassi in proper Punjabi way, zoomed from there ar around 3:30PM and keep tackling city traffic at Ludhiyana, Ambala & other cities, tanked up again en route and at around stopped for evening Lassi at a road side Dhaba around 6:30PM now its completely dark and we have be together further till Delhi, still we had to cover some 200kms towards Delhi in dark, we decided to follow a similar speed car in group of two, Me & Vijay and Ashish & Rohit, I had broken my clear visor goggle in my bag and Rohit didn’t have one so we was riding with tinted clear visor only with a bit difficulty at around 8:30PM we found ourselves some 100kms away from Delhi, we stopped at a Dhaba had Chai & Pakoras, could not get Lassi here , the last stop of our ride, some one started a discussion about the Hera Pheri 1 movie and we had laugh so much keeping sweet memories of our ride, left from there at around 9:30PM with full throttle towards home and I reached home at around 11PM because stucked in Delhi traffic.
