My journeys begin : Straight from my mechanical heart

I am a nine year old Hero (erstwhile Hero Honda) Karizma. My manufacturer draped me in black and sold me in the April of 2005. Since then I had changed 3 owners, ridden 55 thousand kms and paled my paint in the sun until I was bought by my current owner. Back then almost the whole country regarded me as the best tourer on Indian roads, but sadly my previous owners never took me out touring. I yearned to explore the vast expanse of India rather than be a work horse for daily commutes. Thankfully this changed with my new owner. Nine years into my existence, I finally had the chance to go on a short but memorable tour to a hill station called Ooty. Here is my story..

My current owner happened to be a young and recently married guy going by the name of Deathmate.Zed on xBhp. And it is this passion of him that gave my experiences the words that you are now reading. I blushed at the excitement of my new owner and his wife on buying me for as you know I am old to look at. With all my peeling paint and lost sheen, I had not seen these emotions since my first owner. Deathmate immediately remarked that he will take me and his wife touring as much as he can to which his wife jumped in joy. My heart instantly gave out a little rev at the wonderful announcement and my wait for the trip started.

The trip was decided to be a short one day tour. We were to go from Mysore to Ooty to enjoy the roads and the weather more than the destination, for it was festive season and Ooty was expected to be very crowded. I was thrilled to know that I will be riding through forests and hills on my way there.

Re: My journeys begin : Straight from my mechanical heart

              Continued from Before..

I was all decked up and ready to roll by 4 am as decided, but my owners came to me only by 5:30. It is rightly said about the time taken by ladies to get ready I think . Nonetheless, we happily started on the still dark roads of Mysore.

Lesson learnt : Keep everything packed one night before!

My owner had done the following preparations:

              1. Decided on the route to be taken with the help of google maps.

              2. Read on through a couple of travelogues in xBhp to get an idea of the tour.

              3. Kept me ready by taking me to the mechanic and getting me serviced.

              4. Made sure of safety with helmet, leather jacket, tough shoes and rain wear(he hates the rain). There was still a lot to buy he said and planned on doing it very soon.

              5. Kept first aid handy ( credit goes to his wife for this)

I know he still has scope for more preparations in the future. He has learned from this trip , though sadly the hard way But has turned out a better rider and future tourer I am sure.

We cruised through the amazing highways of Mysore and reached Bandipur Tiger Reserve as planned by 7:15. My owner was very excited to enter the forest and kept telling his wife about the animals that they may encounter. I got to know that he had visited Ooty(in a car, BLEH!) in his training days and the roads were not new to him. A point to note here is that they are hardcore wildlife buffs who will cry happily on seeing an elusive wild animal. We saw deer, monkeys and peacocks on the forest trail in Bandipur and the adjoining Mudumalai forest of Tamil Nadu. Though my owner was happy with the small amount of wildlife seen, he still was a little disappointed as he had seen much more the last time.

Lesson Learnt : Reach Bandipur gate by 6 am. The gates open this time and a lot of trucks are waiting to cross it. By being there before the gate opens you can go ahead of the trucks and be the first in the forest that morning. The chances of spotting wildlife increases a lot!

Re: My journeys begin : Straight from my mechanical heart

We reached just outside Ooty at a beautiful place called Bison valley. Deathmate parked me at a high spot so that I could get a view of the beautiful scenery around.

                  What a scene!!

I had never been to a place more picturesque than this before. You humans may have travelled a lot and seen a lot more beauty but to me it was heaven. I had waited nine long years for an experience like this! The clouds kissed me lightly on the visor, as they passed me. I stood as if in a dream, drenched in Nature’s splendor listening to the melody of a small waterfall gushing below. I looked out to the happy couple clicking selfies and gave a small flash of my pilot lamps as a sign of my brimming gratitude to them. Luckily they did not notice, and I stood still again admiring the scene. I am seriously doubtful of freaking them out one day in my excitement, as machines are not supposed to do things on their own you know

                  Yours truly

Re: My journeys begin : Straight from my mechanical heart

We proceeded after spending a wonderful time there. Now came the famous(infamous?) 36 hairpin bends as announced by the signboards. Deathmate was confident though cautious and I egged him on with encouraging torque. None of us faltered on the bends and climbs and we merrily conquered the hairpins. I blushed again at the admiration showered on me for my spread of torque and ride ability

Some more pics of the ride and views from the hairpin bends..
