Re: Pune - Pondicherry, Solo on Baby Duke !
Nice ride there.Originally posted by Sanchit Arora View PostIt all started when a dear childhood friend of mine randomly planned a trip to Chennai to meet other childhood friends over a long weekend.
Got a text message "Bombay-Chennai flight tickets tonight at 3k, game?"
Replied : "You, and a random trip, stop kidding !"
Then she forwarded me the booking text message, and I replied "I'll ride to Chennai, meet you there !!!"
I frantically opened up my laptop and started looking up the route and then realized that my bike wasn’t prepared for this mega ride !
It was a moment of realization and inception, the seed was planted in my head, I had to do this !
That weekend I did extensive research on pre-prep for such long rides and read-up all the touring blogs (1000kms+) to get the first hand experience of seasoned riders who have attempted and successfully executed such long rides !
Finally prepared a list of things to-buy :
1) Tank Bag
2) Tail Bag
3) Rain Suit
4) BackPack Rain Covers
5) Puncture Repair Kit
6) Foot Pump
7) Surgical Gloves
8) Garbage Bags
Also searched for a couple of stores retailing travel gear and got some amazing advice at the Outdoor Travel Gear Store in Pune.
As it was raining heavily, my main concern was to get rain-proof bags, which turned out to be an over-expectation/lack of experience. No-bag in whatsoever price range will not be able to provide full water-proofing.(It reminded me of my LS2 jacket which came with the 100% water-proof tag)
Decided to do some IJT(Indian Jugaad Technique)
and went straight to a local bag shop and bought a large good-quality laptop bag and a small side bag, then asked the shopkeeper to make some changes.
Initially it was difficult to make him understand my requirements, but then I took him to my bike(Duke200) and gave him a demonstration that how this can be fastened on the rear and the tank. He was excited and so was I.
Finally after 3 hours of trial & error, the bags were a perfect fit, though I was a little sceptical about the durability, but had no issues during the entire trip.
So the check list was almost complete but couldn’t find a decent sized foot pump, so skipped that keeping fingers-crossed.
Called up my friends in B’lore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Nashik & Mumbai and told them about the ride I’ve planned coming weekend. And they called me names, to be decent ,crazy, retard, mad, stupid and other adjectives in hindi and English. So I though, I’ll surprise them by sending actual pictures when enroute, and it worked !
Initial Plan :
Day 1 : Pune - B’lore
Day 2 : B’lore – Chennai
Day 3 : Chennai – Pondi
Day 4 : Pondi – Chennai – Hyderabad
Day 5 : Hyderabad – Nashik
Day 6 : Nashik – Mumbai
Day 7 : Mumbai – Pune
Actual Executed :
Day 1 : Pune - B’lore
Day 2 : B’lore – Chennai - Pondi
Day 3 : Pondi – Chennai
Day 4 : Chennai – B’lore
Day 5 : B’lore – Pune

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.
A good mechanic will let you watch even without charging you for it. |
It is funny to know that we've been imitated and copied so well and surprising when we notice our mistakes are copied as well.

Finally the plan came to life with the alarm screaming into the silence at 3:30 am, got up, cross checked every item, took a leisurely bath and treated myself with the morning cuppa and was good to go by 4:30 am.
This was the hardest part of the entire trip, saddling up! Took me almost 30 minutes to load up the tail bag, tank bag and then gear up. Was good to go by 5 am and had already chosen the exit from the city to the highway.
(The changed color of the bend pipe after riding hard) Love It
(Hubli : Gigantic Structure; couldn't figure out what it was, but beautiful)
(Realized that I've entered Karnataka)
2 more fuel breaks, where first I gulped a nariyal pani and a south Indian delight in the second. Saw the first sign of the banglore city around 4:15, took a small break, asked for the route to Hebbal(where I was supposed to crash at a friends place) took a lifetime to reach there and was finally greeted with a familiar face at around 5:40pm.
(Recharging)
(Just before entering B'lore) ; That was quick

Thanx Tushar..Originally posted by tusharsmoily View PostHey man nice pics over there!
Did you check how much range did you get on a full tank?
Range depends on the riding style...
8 Ltrs lasted 240-250 kms when ridden in between 80-100 kmph and lasted 200-210 kms when rode hard continuously between 110-130 kmph...

Day 2: Pune - Pondicherry, Solo on Baby Duke !
Day 1 : An evening in B'lore...
(Corner House, Lavelle Road)
Alive By Chocolate
rd
The Madras Feeling(In Andhra)
Exit Andhra - Enter Tamil Nadu
Waited for the radiator fan to stop, which took a while, atleast 500ml of water and a smoke. Then finally I was out of my alienware into just boxers, on his bed upside down in his cool room.
Took a quick bath, had lunch alone, as he had already killed it waiting for me and the finally left for Pondi at 5:30pm.
My friend dressed in slippers, shorts and a t-shirt was too careless as a pillion, I insisted him to take his helmet.
ECR : full of barricades till Mahabalipuram and it was dark already. Took a small break as he complained of butt ache, in the meanwhile I tanked up and there after a couple of breaks and finally reached Pondi at 8:30pm.

Re: Day 2: Pune - Pondicherry, Solo on Baby Duke !
Hi Sanchit Aurora
That was a long tour in Duke. How was your back after the long ride in Duke. I also own a Duke and planning for a long ride. So can you let me know on this.
Also did u get premium petrol everywhere or you had used unleaded for in between refills.
If so was there any performance difference between Normal and premium petrol.

It was indeed a very long one... But the back was not much of a concern, it was the butt... Thinking of replacing the foam with a gel pad...Originally posted by karticraja View PostHi Sanchit Aurora

I've never used any premium fuel on my bike, I use the normal unleaded from day one as its 91 octane all over, I just made sure that I filled form a decent HP or IO pump...

The Legendary Yamaha Enduro
Crossing a boat
A distant view
The float that brought us
My friend having some good times
Finally left the amazing island and was back on the road towards the civilization.
Some more pictures on the way back to chennai...
Saw a salt flat and couldn't hold myself back
So this was the day dedicated to a lot of pictures as the ride was short and had a lot of time to kill...
