A houseboat!

The Dal Lake is a source of sustenance for the people of Srinagar. It is a city inside the city of Srinagar. People living on houseboats need not visit the city for goods. There are floating markets, textile and handicraft shops, stationary shops and even floating plantations for various fruits and vegetables. And then there are Shikaras (as seen below) which cater to the booming tourism of the region.



Shikaras are small rented boats used to travel from one corner of the lake to another. They are akin to autorickshaws on land, but are eco-friendly in nature. I was admiring the Shikaras and the nearby houseboats when an old man came by in his Shikara, eager to sell some handicrafts and the world famous Kashmiri saffron. While he was enthusiastically presenting his products we both struck into a friendly conversation about Kashmir and Ladakh and my story of coming all the way from Bangalore had its usual effect! In the end he convinced me to buy and in turn, I managed to shoot him with the Canon!



After a brisk Shikara ride we set off to Gulmarg, 70 kms from the city of Srinagar. Gulmarg, or the Valley of Flowers, is a popular adventure sport destination during the winter. In the summer, however, Gulmarg is lush green. The climb to the Gulmarg valley was equally beautiful as the valley itself, with tall pine trees and meandering roads. The DSLR did its job pretty well.

BTW did NS gave any issues/power loss while the Leh trip?

Thanks. NS did have power issues while climbing the passes. I got the carb adjusted in Leh. After that it worked fine. I will get into details in the posts.
