  • [Photo Feature]: Into the Ghats and Mountain :- A Short Trip Bangalore to Wynad

    Hi All,

Even though I have done so many rides, this is my first travelogue ever, so Please be nice . Hope I will improve In my upcoming logs.

It all started when I saw a long weekend (3 days) coming. Need to do something mate!!! I can’t sit at home for that long 3 days. So I discussed with my friend about this, and he was like waiting for this. He has a bullet 500. We both decided to buy together but for some unforeseen reason I was not able to buy on Time. Also we decided where to go, Wynad!!! Why Wynad? Apart from Riding we also had one more thing in mind a Trek to Chembra Peak, The highest in Wynad and 2nd Highest in Kerala. So we calculated the distance from Bangalore to Wynad is 300 odd KM's. We decided the destination and Objective as well. Now comes the next question, I don’t have a bike for a long distance (Oh no dude, seriously!!!).

I have a Pulsar 150cc which is 11 years old and she is not stable after 70 kmph. She starts vibrating at 70 kmph and above 80 is quiet scary. Also the bike had few niggles and needed the tyre changes. So quiet a bit to work on her. She has served me for more than a lakh km. Initially I was planning for rent a bike for 3 days, and spoke to a bike rental personal and got a good deal for Continental GT. All set, I was also calling couple of other friends for trip and one of told me that he is going to be out of station for the weekend (family function) and I can use his Bike. Man Oh man... I was waiting for this. He has a Thunderbird 350 2014 model. I didn’t think twice. I said Okay bro I am going to take her for this trip. That was so sweet of him. I took the bike couple of days before the trip as he was going out of station 2 days before itself; this also gave me some time to get used to the bike. Also one of my colleague (Pradeep) also Joined the party as he was also not planning to do much on the same weekend. So he decided to take his brother's thunderbird 2010 model. so now all set. 3 Rider (Me, Sharath and Pradeep), 3 Bike (1 2010 Thunderbird 350, 1 2014 model Thunderbird 350 and 1 Bullet 500 2014 model, and One destination Wynad/Chembra Peak. And now eagerly waiting for the day, the road trip day.

    This is how it went
Day 1:- Ride to Wynad, Visited Banasura Sagar Dam.
Day 2:- Chembra Peak Trek, Ride to Thirunelli Temple.
Day 3:- Dharshan in Thirunelli Temple, Ride to Bangalore.

Total of 868 kms in 3 days.

Few Pics before I begin the Day1. Mods Please approve my travelogue. Also please let me know if the formatting is alright.

            Day 1:-

Finally the day Arrived, April 3rd. Fuelled up the tank, checked air pressure, borrowed a riding Jacket from a friend and bought kneed guards for the ride all the previous day. The Plan was to start at 4.30 in the morning. However got delayed by half hour started by 5.00,

            All set to Start

, Went to my friend's (Sharath’s) place and picked him up , took couple of snaps ...

We both started and I have asked the third one (Pradeep) to wait near to Souls Space arena near to Mahadevpura, We reached there by 5.30 am and I could see poor guy was waiting along the road side with head phone in the ears and listening to music, what else he can do waiting for us. So we thought of wasting no more time.

We started From Soul's space Arena, at around 5.30-5.45. There was little traffic until Kanakpura road. (Had to stop in between to tighten my bags, as they were falling down, Was not able to buy/get bungee ropes, My fault of course ) After Kanakpura it was butter smooth. We were just cruising through, I hit 105 - 115 kmph approx. in the 350 TBTS, but it was vibrating like hell and was not able to hold like that for long, I came back to 80 - 90 kmph at this speed the bike was in its sweet spot and well in control, We rode until We reached somewhere near to Malavalli or Halaguru, There we had the first stop. We stretched for few mins ... It was in the highway in between mountain. The view was nice. The sun was just coming up.

            Few Clicks

            thats me .....

We also saw other riders also going along. And yes its a long weekend so of course you will see more of them, we waved our hands, after a few km's we saw a small village and there we had our breakfast. It was a small hut like mess, but he gave us some nice Poori and Sabzi ( hot hot !!! ), and tea. Here we took a small break for around 10 to 15 mins. Everyone was asking us where are you guys from and where all of you are going, and things like that. I could see we have grabbed a lot of attentions in that small town. Also we were on Royale Enfield, and it seems like most of the people in the village was more interested on the bullets. One guys in the mess/hotel told me bullets is always good for long distance (I think it’s the perspective of different people, I feel what matters is if you are comfortable, then any bike is a good long distance/tourer)

Couple of clicks after the breakfast

            Pradeep and Sharath

            Pradeep and Me

            Why not one solo .....

                  Thanks Guys .....

We reached the cottage around 2.30 .

Few Pics of the Cottage we stayed ....

The forth bike is of the care taker of the Cottage (Jerry)

We Parked our bikes near to our cottage, Unloaded our bags took them to the room; It was just a room and washroom, with a TV. Anyways we were not planning to use the TV. We also met Jerry the care taker of the place. We got freshened up and though of Visiting Banasura Sagar Dam, It is 25 kms from Kalpetta and is the largest "Earth Dam" in India and Second largest in Asia. It is surrounded by scenic mountains and one of the best tourist attractions in Wynad. On the way we saw a lake or not sure this is a part of the Banasura Sagar Dam, we went and sat near the lake and clicked a few pics along with Jerry.

                  Few Clicks there ...

blue bird before the lake ....

                  The lake

                  Bullet facing the lake ...

                  Sharath with his bullet ...

Me on the blue bird ..

                  Bullet Raja ....

                  Pradeep waiting for us ...

and that's how I took the pics

We spend some time in the lake and then headed towards the Dam, and I should say that it is really such beautiful scenery. The Dam is in between the mountains, The Dam reside in the foot of Banasura Mountain. The mountains, the Dam, the water and the wind that refreshing us from the long 8 hours of riding. We sat there for an hour or so taking pics and talking non-sense.

                  Few Clicks from the Dam

                  Pradeep Enjoying the view ....

The view before the Dam ..

Clouds forming ... is it gonna Rain. Luckily it didn't.

I managed to click a close-up of the church that we saw near to the Dam.

The church from far ... can you spot it ...... ?

Then we returned back to the cottage and on the Way Jerry wanted to purchase few things for the kitchen for our breakfast. We also purchased our dinner from a Hotel and went to the Cottage and guess what... No power... , it was 401 kms in the ODO after the first day )

                  We parked our bikes ....

. We got freshened up in the candle light (Candle light bath) and we took our dinner to the table outside the cottage as the room was filled with our stuff and could not clean it up because of no power, and it was a Candle light dinner... came back to the cottage and slept . I heard in between it was raining, coz of the rain we felt too cold and had a peaceful sleep. We kept the Alarm at 5.00 Am as we planned to leave the place at 6.30 AM for a trek in Chembra peak.

Our Candle light dinner .... lol ....

Big day next .. The Chembra Trek.

                        Hi
A detailed, well narrated trip log.
                        Good pictures as well.
                        Weekend trips are always relinquishing.
The best part was the fact that you decided to go along for the trip with all the riding gears even when you didn't have the jacket(and managed one) which is a very appreciating fact.
                        Good job.

We started from the cottage around 3.30 PM after a photo session (How can we miss that), and headed towards Mananthavady, which is around 45 kms from the cottage. The ride was nice, as there was not much issue with the road. Even though they were not wide enough. On the way Sharath felt nostalgic as Mananthavady was the where he was brought up till he was 10 yrs. old and he also saw the school where he studied 25 yrs. back. He wanted to take a pic in front of the school, and then we moved on. From Mananthavady there was another 30 kms to the temple. And our room was just below the temple. We rode towards the temple, and soon we entered the Ghats section, and yes it time for yet another cornering. It was again a wonderful experience riding through the Ghats, there were so many ‘S’ road which was perfect for good Cornering. And in between we wanted to have another photo session between the trees.

Pradeep waiting for us to finish the foto sesion ... lol ...

We took a few pics and then headed towards the temple. And Just about some 5 kms before we reaching the temple, there were few guys on the road and waved hand on us to stop, we stopped and they came to us saying it’s not safe to go now, as there are elephants attacks, We stopped for a while and thought, what should we do? We thought, we ‘ll see when it comes to that. We headed again, initially I though the elephant story was a fake one, but guess what, We saw an elephant on the road!!! Yes it was a big elephant, and harmless at the moment. I was all set and ready if I wanted to take a U turn ... lol.... in case if the elephant charge. Don’t wanted to take a risk with the bike and myself. Anyhow, the elephant was just moving to the other side of the road searching for some evening snacks . And that time a localite came from the opposite direction in a Maruthi Alto and crossed the elephant and came to us, He told don’t do too much drama, just move along quietly and the elephant won’t harm anyone. We took couple of Pics again and moved to Hotel where our accommodation was booked.

                          Sharath facing the elephant..

                          Brave man ..

We reached the Hotel around 5.30 -6.00 PM. The name was Sree Vishnupadam residency. We went in, kept our languages, got freshened up, came down had some Masala Dosa and Ghee Dosa, from the same hotel itself. Filled up our tummy and then we had an idea why can’t we just for a walk in the Jungle and if we could see the elephant and take some pics. All though it will be adventurous one. We thought of giving a try. So we waited for some time and started walking towards the jungle, it was around 7.00 PM and it was dark. We walked few meters and somebody called us from behind. It was the gate keeper. He stopped us and told, two wheelers and pedestrians are not allowed after 6.00 in to the Jungle, there is a naughty elephant that comes out in the night and charges on people, he added. Then he was telling us about the Jungle and the wildlife present there. He also mentioned leopards are also there. Finally we decided to come back, and on the way back we got into a small mess/hotel and had our dinner and headed towards our stay. We slept around 9.00 PM as we had to get up early and go to the temple.
