  • [Photo Feature]: Tripping in the Broken City

Not a travelogue but this is a collection of pictures taken during various rides solo and with the group, Rotrods, in and around Pune.

"Beauty lies for those who take detours".
This funda has taken me to so many amazing locations which one would never visit if they stick to the plan. This is incorporated in all our rides and we never miss to check out a road branching to some unknown location. Even helps getting away from crowd.

Maharashtra especially during monsoons is a perfect place to explore on a motorcycle. It offers ghats, beautiful coastal roads and arrow straight highways to pick your ride.
After shifting to Pune some 3 years ago the list of famous places to visit was exhausted pretty soon. We then started picking up places according to the terrain we saw in the earth view of google maps. Any road meandering through ghats and away from civilization became our destination for the ride. Vada Pav and khandha bhaji became the riders fuel cause that's the only thing we would find in these obscure locations.

Will let the photographs do rest of the talking (with some excerpts).

    - The deodorant ride
The plan was to buy a deodorant from a nearby supermarket. Ended up some 30kms far, near Phase 3 Hinjewadi, and of course forgot to buy the deo.

    - First overnight at Mahabaleshwar with the group

we started pretty late, around 6 pm, and decided to spend the night there. Monsoon was at full swing and and it was foggy all around.

    -Madhe Ghat Ride

The original plan was to ride to Madhe ghat via Phabe ghats. We reached Madhe but never crossed Phabe, nevertheless the route we ended on was very beautiful and secluded. We did not encounter any cars except for a police Bolero patrolling the ghat. I thanked my excellent navigational skills, because of them only we were lost in first place , which brought us to this other route.

            - Varandha Ghat Ride

Original Plan was to ride till Deoghar dam but someone suggested to ride Varandha Ghats too. Took a detour and we were rewarded. Lush green mountains all around us, the view was breathtaking.

My Pulsar 200NS sprocket went kaput so took my 7 year old Unicorn. Boy it was a good decision, soft suspension and padded seat were a boon on the potholes. Bike just glided over them and never over the 250km ride gave any problems.

            -Tamhini Ghat Ride

The ride was done just before the onset of monsoons. Pune was undergoing a dry spell and rains had not yet hit the city. Went on a rain hunt and actually chased it down. We could see the rain clouds over the ghat from Mulshi Dam and sped straight towards them. The first shower and the earth starts smelling great and we got that all at Tamhini.
Early rain + No crowd the ride felt heavenly.

            - Offroading at Lavasa

Yes i know it sounds weird, people go there for the twists and butter smooth roads. Yes we did enjoy the curves but had something else in mind. Explored a trail just before the main gate of the city and ended up here:

                          Here''s some more:

                          - Lonavala-Amby Valley Mulshi Run

Initially the plan was to ride to Kaas Plateau to see the wildflowers in bloom. Armed with our cameras we wanted to ride there, would have been a decent ride along with some photography. But the plan was soon tanked as most of the guys who have been there complained of traffic and chaos during the weekends. Nowhere to ride we decided to hit Lonavala and return. As usual nothing happened according to plan and instead of returning from Amby Valley City we pushed ahead on the broken roads and ended up near Mulshi Dam. Despite the road ridden with potholes and gravel it was a fun ride. The road was empty throughout and another detour took us to a beautiful lake devoid of any other humans which made it almost litter free, well almost.

I had planned to shoot the galaxy and it ended up as a night ride to Lavasa with around 8 riders joining.

                              -Wolves ride to Kaas Plateau

So we did not ride to Kaas plateau at the time when flowering season was at its peak because of traffic and crowd. We decided to go there afterwards.

Just at the begining of the ride one of the riders in the group slipped on some rotten tomatoes and crashed his NS. Still he came for the ride which soon turned out to be a bad decision. His leg started swelling during the return and we had to stop after every few kms for him. It turned dark and had to ride 40 kms with heavy rains and low visibility till Pune. Nevertheless Kaas was fun, with no crowd we could go offroad, click some pics in the grass, take the bike right up to the water's edge.
