    Re: Project K-Top

As I was saying previously, the pics that my friend showed me made me curious to visit the place to experience the beauty first hand. A few days later, around July 2014, I was going through a Leh travelogue during free time at office when my manager noticed it and said why don't I plan to visit the place. It seemed unbelievable to me that he said so, immediately I said it will take 2 weeks to complete the trip and he was ok with granting me the leaves. Unfortunately, I had no plan or no money but I requested my manager not change his decision till June 2015. That's when I would do the trip.

That was the day when the stepping stone for the trip was laid. Initially I planned the trip alone. So didn't inform any of my friends abt it. I started gathering information from wherever I could. Facebook groups, travelogues, friends and known person. DK sir's FB page helped me a lot in keeping a tab of the climate there.

Days passed by, I had enough information and also accumulated enough money for the trip. I was a little nervous specially because I was going alone, if some mishap happens, noone will be there to help me. In January, I went out on a trip to Chakrata where I experienced black ice and how to ride on it. Really, nothing can beat an experience. After the trip, I was confident, I was ready for the tough terrains up in Leh-Ladakh.

Finally, I disclosed my plan to a couple of friends Ankush and Shiwan and they readily agreed to join me. Then we created a checklist of things to be carried which included clothes, spares and medicines.

Now we were all set for the trip and were eagerly waiting for the d-day for the trip to begin.

          Re: Project K-Top

          The story continues :

We had entered into the week at the end of which we had to leave for the greatest ride of our life. Days were getting longer everyday as we were nearing the beginning of the journey. I was not feeling like working at office and I am sure my group mates also were going through the same feeling. On top of that the colleagues at work added to the exitement with their various questions. Somehow I managed to reach till Friday. Saturday morning, it was time for final packing as per the checklist. I packed up, checked and then re-checked so that I should not miss out on any important stuff.

Finally, all packing done, gears checked, bike fueled up, the wait for the time to leave began.

Our Day 1 target was Udhampur around 750kms. I know its a little bit too much but since we were going into a terrain where climate change without prior warning, I wanted to keep as many days in buffer as possible ( though my itenary already had 2 days as buffer). At night, me and Ankush gathered at Shiwaan's place so to avoid any meeting point confusion and leave together. The real story would begin tommorow onwards. So stay tuned. [emoji6]

DAY 1 (June 14) : Delhi to Udhampur

The time was here. It was time to ride to the highest motorable pass of the world. We had a power nap at Shiwaan's place since we knew Day 1 was going to be tiring.

We started around 2:30 am from Shiwaan's house. It took us almost half an hour to hit the GT Karnal road. I had planned our first break to be somewhere around Karnal. But mother nature had different plans for us. No sooner did we reach GT Karnal road, the climate began changing. Strong winds welcomed us to GT Karnal road which later turn into dust storm. We kept on riding. My bike being a fully faired one was the most to get hit by the cross winds. Riding against the wind current was already difficult and then it started to rain, though a few droplets. To be on the safer side, we stopped by the roadside to get our rain coats on. And whoa, what a timing it was. As soon as we stopped, it started pouring. We took 10 mins, got our rain coats on and started riding again, though at a slower speeds. I was constantly thinking, would we be able to achieve the set destination of Udhampur by the end of the day.

But as the sun started coming out, the weather got better. Now our speeds got better and we were cruising at 90-100 kmph.
