Another thing: It may sound like a joke, but are permit-issuing offices open on Sunday? I am reaching there Sunday and don't wanna miss out the Nathula pass.

No man, I never mentioned of getting permits in Siliguri, neither evn I know if one can get it there. You can issue permit for Nathula in Gangtok only.Originally posted by diffuser911 View PostSpidey:
You mention permit can be made in Siliguri, right? Are these valid for going to Nathula? I have a friend there who can get me the permit in advance if it cuts down the delay. I am in confusion over the various permits discussed here (Route permit vs Inner state permit).
But am doubtful, that it'll be open this season due to various reasons. plz check out that & then move ahead with ur plans.

You can try your luck for obtaining the permits in incase you have a local contacts.Else most of the travel agents do the entire package with hotel bookings and transport which I guess wouldnt interest you.Originally posted by diffuser911 View PostMy plans have changed and I am going solo August last week. Hope the rains won't be a bother. Anyone cares to join, please PM. Whoever heard of One to Tango??
darth_lucifer, Anup and razor:
Can I get a permit made for Nathula in advance? I was planning to start on Sat from Bhubaneswar and reach Siliguri on Sunday night. But knowing that the pass is open only on Wed, Thu, Sat and Sun, I am thinking of starting on Friday mid-day and struggle upto Gangtok on Sunday morning, then head over to Nathula with the permits in hand
. Can't afford to miss the weekend on either side of the week due to leaves crunch
.

You need to get permits from Sikkim Tourism office @Gangtok.I think the pass is open now on all the days contrary to what you might have heard...check with your local friend

Maybe I got it wrong; saw in your post where there is a list of Sikkim Tourism office. Will definitely checkout if the pass is open before going.Originally posted by spiderweb View PostNo man, I never mentioned of getting permits in Siliguri, neither evn I know if one can get it there. One of my friends is coming down to my city, so I'll give him all the photocopies of the documents requried. Will check out the days too, so that I don't take a hit after reaching there.Originally posted by darth_lucifer View PostYou can try your luck for obtaining the permits in incase you have a local contacts.Else most of the travel agents do the entire package with hotel bookings and transport which I guess wouldnt interest you.

Are mobiles from other states allowed in roaming in Sikkim? I've heard J&K doesn't allow, being a border state. If they do allow, which one has the best coverage?

Nothing of this sort...neither in J&K....all mobile networks have access in all the sovereign states of India.Originally posted by diffuser911 View PostAre mobiles from other states allowed in roaming in Sikkim? But Dont try to roam by urself after 8 PM (after dark basically), thats a strict NO-NO from my side. Robberies & other crimes are common at that time.Originally posted by darkknight View PostNothing of this sort...neither in J&K....all mobile networks have access in all the sovereign states of India.

If u r in gangtok... after 8 is not a problem... gangtok sleeps after 11... But in remote places like lachung, chumthang or lachen, life stops after 7.. Robberies & other crimes are not the issue... sikkim is safer than many/any other states in India.. but you would have nothing to do after 7 in those places and thats common for all remote hilly areas i think...Originally posted by spiderweb View PostBut Dont try to roam by urself after 8 PM (after dark basically), thats a strict NO-NO from my side. Well thats just what I heard of, dint really dare go out to check. Though I really wanted to. I went there in 2004, I guess maybe that time crimes were there.Originally posted by burnoutz View PostIf u r in gangtok... after 8 is not a problem... gangtok sleeps after 11... Updates on SIkkim
Okk...time for some updates from my side. I had a visit from a friend who lives in Siliguri and after a long talk with him, I came to know the following:- Gorkhaland issue has had an indirect affect on Sikkim due to the blocking of NH-31A. The patch of road barred is so that no one can enter the state by using a bypass. Hence, the city is running low on supplies and hotels have closed down. Even petrol pumps have orders to give only 5L petrol at a go.
- The Sikkim Tourism office in Siliguri/Kolkata can be used for getting permits in advance. My friend will get more details and I'll update you fellas here.
- One warning that he gave me was, in his own words, "Hill people don't like the plain fellas much and they can get into fights easily for the smallest reasons. So, don't mess!
". PS: My friend's opinion and based on his experience, not mine, which is quite contrary. - Tung La is a lesser known scenic spot and a half-hour drive away from Nathu La gate. Worth visiting since you are already close by
