  • Hey ho Nagaland

Dreams. They push us, we push them. And some.. chase after them.

My dream is to ride the entire North East Indian States and thankfully, that dream has been slowly taking shape since earlier this year. It started off with rides to Assam, then Mizoram and a bit of Myanmar. Ever since, the mind and body have been beckoning for another interstate ride.

It had been raining for almost the past six months in Shillong and I was just waiting for the sky to clear up and ride without getting drenched.

So, Andy planned that we should go to Nagaland for the weekend and that's what we did. Dimapur is 350kms away from Shillong and from Dimapur, we planned to visit Kohima the next day and come back on the third day.

Interestingly, whenever Andy, Mossy (my cousin) and I ride, it would always rain. Not the romantic 100-costume-changes-bolllywood-dance- rain but the raining cats and dogs type. and no matter how much rain gear we put on, we would always get drenched. This time was different. We were riding under a bright, warm and sunny sky. It was such a good feeling... Untill a few kms before reaching Dimapur. It started raining and it never stopped untill we left Nagaland. Arrrghhhhhhhh!!! I guess the showers of blessings will always accompany us on our rides .. hehe :P

              Re: Hey ho Nagaland

So Andy came from Guwahati (he had some work there), Mossy and I rode out from Shillong and we met up at Jorabat (the junction towards Nagaland) on the 5th morning. Had a plate of parathas each and we were off on the road. This was Mossy's first long ride and he just got a new RE Thunderbird, so he was quite excited for the ride. From Jorabat we head to Nagaon which was around 120kms from Jorabat. Jorabat is in the Meghalaya - Assam border. This was a nice 4 laned road in which Andy and Mossy had to bear with my bike's low cruising speed. I'm grateful they didn't leave me behind,... for long... yes, they did have their occassional burst of speed too! hehe..

We carried on towards Dimapur and stopped at a local market place in the Karbi Anglong district to do some marketing. The bikes caused quite an attention and the three men in their riding gears walking through the narrow lanes of the market caused a bigger attention, especially when they are trying to buy 4-5kgs of pork

As we inched closer to Dimapur, it started to drizzle. Then drizzle turned into rain and from a warm, dry ride , we got drenched. It was late and we didn't have any reservations in Dimapur. Thankfully, we called Lolo ( a friend from Dimapur) and he booked a room for us at his cousin's guesthouse. We were still about 20kms away from Dimapur then. Well the road started deteriorating and it eventually turned into a pothole ridden ride. With the drizzle adding up to the spice of the ride, in no time we were riding like answering multiple choice questions: (a) Brake hard (b) Swerve right (c) Swerve Left (d) Stand on the pegs and gun it. The marks for each choice was another pothole. :P By the time we reached Dimapur, it was around 10PM.

It was dark, raining and very quiet. We got the address and phone number of the Guest House but didn't know how to find it. We decided to keep riding until we could find someone to ask for directions or till we see some direction boards. To our surprise, we saw a Meghalaya registered White coloured MS Swift ahead of us. I thought they were people from Meghalaya and felt a sense of relieved the moment we saw the car. I rode along it's side and asked for them to stop and they did. I spoke to the driver and it turned out that the car was bought used from Meghalaya but the driver was from Dimapur. We asked the driver of the car if he could show us the way to the Guest House and he told us to follow him. The location of the guest house was not familiar to him either so we kept stopping at certain junctions to call the owner of the Guest House and he would give the directions to our 'Swift Friend' - Bijoy. It was raining hard as we rode through the pothole ridden roads following the Swift's tail lights. We kept riding for a few kms, the car stopped and we were outside out Guest House. I couldn't thank Bijoy enough for helping us out and for going out of his way. I hope we can catch up again sometimes

So, you may ask. Is it safe to travel to the North Eastern States? I hope the few lines above answers that

                    Awesome...

Once I have donned my black helmet, I become anonymous. My face ceases to identify me. My black visor shields others from the rigours of my passing glance while shielding me from their attempts to peer into my soul. I am an anonymous rider shrouded in black. I am no longer a specific self. I am a passing Traveller.

                      Hello bro..
Recently did the Guwahati-Dimapur route. Although I was lucky as I didn't face any rain but the road through Doboka,Manja was hell according to me. You could take Kaziranga-Numaligarh route(I took this route while coming back). Its awesome, coupled with good road & great landscape. But this route is longer than that of Manja. Since I am not from Assam/NE, I was told to cover both the route in day light.(I am from Bengal BTW).
Please share in detail about the road condition from Dimapur to Kohima.

                      Thanks & Happy Riding,

                      Ritabroto

N.B.- I stay in Guwahati (work here!!!). We can hang out if you come to Guwahati or me to Shillong.

Another good one, bro. I am pretty sure this will look much more intriguing once you're in the land of the naga(s), with dry beef, beef chutney, bamboo shoot pork, akhuni etc. as an icing on the cake. Man, don't you miss out on posting pictures of those stuff.
I can relate to the market in karbi-anglong but pork is pork, what say! Keep those updates coming now.

PS - you haven't really posted anything 'bout this on whatsapp though

                          Day 2: Dimapur - Kohima - Dimapur (154kms)

We woke up to the sound of pouring rain and wasn't in such a mood to ride in the rain again. But we had decided that no matter what, we should leave by 7 AM for Kohima. We were unprepared for the rain. Thankfully i took two ponchos and we made do with them. The guesthouse we were in provided early breakfast and Vito, the attendant there, brought us breakfast at 6AM. After a heavy breakfast, we left for Kohima at 7:30 AM. It was still raining so we took it nice and easy cruising through the plains of Dimapur and into the hills of Kohima. Before the start of the ascend, there was a big welcome gate made in a traditional design to welcome the people into the hills. We took some photos there and as we rode on, we saw that there were many more gates of such kinds while entering localities and towns. It showed how hospitable and kind the people were and also the love for their culture.

We came across this place, 'Chapru', at more than halfway to Kohima. It seems like they serve traditional cuisines but sadly it was closed on Sunday.

Hahahah oh yes it was bro! But it was part of the fun too. We planned to take the Kaziranga Route too while coming back but because of some unavoidable circumstance, we had to come back the same way. More on that later Day light travelling is most preferred but even in the night, we didn't face any problem.

30kms towards Kohima is laden with a good fun winding road. the last 30kms has some bad stretches.

Sure @Ritabroto . That would be great Thank you so much. Ride safe.

I can relate to the market in karbi-anglong but pork is pork, what say! Keep those updates coming now.

PS - you haven't really posted anything 'bout this on whatsapp though
