  • Rides from Kochi

. All of which I came to know about in the months waiting for the bike.

    .

And I went for my first 60km ride on the very next day. I started going for weekend short rides regularly. Acquired all riding gear one by one, gradually. I would have never done all of these, if not for the trip logs which I read here, and also due to the safe riding tips followed by many.

I mainly ride solo, not by choice, because I do not have local friends who share a passion for motorcycling. At the same time I really enjoy the freedom which the solo journey gives - mainly being able to stop whenever you feel like. And in this thread I plan to log ,share photos and videos of my morning and day rides from Kochi.

Solo Single Day Ride To Munnar

At around 130 KMs, Munnar is one of the most beautiful weekend getaways from Kochi, and also one of the best routes to ride on.There are many waterfalls on the way and the hill station is covered with tea plantations. I wanted to ride this route ever since I had my Electra, but I could not commit to a date and do it. Kept on procrastinating on this and got the feeling that this was never going to happen until I applied a trick on myself. What was holding me back was I had done only morning and half day rides before this and I was not sure if I could ride all day, whether I would be able to return comfortably or will need to stay, also the climate was a bit fuzzy at the time with unpredictable rainy days. The trick was I decided to do minimal preparation for the ride and once I a woke up on the day make a call for go/no-go, If go, I decided to to ride in the direction of Munnar. I will keep on going as long as I feel good, I could turn back anytime I wanted, even after an hour in to the ride if I do not feel that great about it. A short solo day ride like this would be peanuts for many of the folks here but considering there is also a vast majority who have all the dreams to ride but will never do them due to lack of will justifies this .

So as minimal preparation I packed my bag with water, biscuits, rag cloth, spare cables, minimal tools (no puncture repair), power bank etc on the previous day. This would be tied to the pillion seat by bungee net. Also fueled up the bullet, cleaned and lubed the chain. Set alarm for 5.30 planning to leave by 6. Woke up at 4.30 and by 5.30 I was on road.

I rode in to dawn which was a beautiful experience. The route followed was Kochi - Perumbavur - Kothamangalam - Neriyamangalam - Adimali - Munnar. The road to Munnar is good. Its almost straight till Neriyamangalam and then curvy roads up hills starts. I rode till 7.30 and then decided to have a tea break just before Neriyamangalam. At Neriyamangalam you get to ride through this iconic bridge across the river Periyar. This bridge feels like sort of a gateway to Munnar since once you cross the bridge the nature of ride, road and surroundings change.

Around half hour ride from here there is Cheeyappara waterfalls on the left where most of the tourists stop.

From here I took close to two hours to reach Munnar, with a few breaks in between. The Munnar feeling is when the misty mountains are seen and the ride is through tea plantations.

The traffic on road throughout the ride was comparatively low, mainly because it was the counting day for local body polls across Kerala. There was a big block in Munnar town due to this, the entire population was there in the streets outside the building where counting was happening.

But once I could get past this the roads were again deserted. Most of the popular tourist spots in Munnar were too. I had another stop at a hotel for tea and decided to ride towards Top Station / Mattupetty. Felt really good, riding through the woods on a solo journey, really feeling alone.

The ride back took longer since I stopped more and it was getting hot as I rode out of the hills. Also the election results were announced by this time and each small town which I passed through had a celebration procession. I decided to have lunch at around 3 PM after Adimali. Reached home by around 6. Covered almost 300 Km on the day. Here is the video of the ride.

                Ride to Vagamon & Kuttikanam

Vagamon is another hill station which is around 100+ Kms from Kochi. The route taken for this ride was Kochi - Ettumanur - Pala - Erattupetta - Vagamon - Elappara - Kuttikkanam - Kanjirappalli - Erattupetta - Pala - Ettumanur - Kochi.

So it was holidays following Onam and I was staying midway on the route with my bike and on morning decided to ride till Vagamon. Since I started midway I had to ride only 50+ Kms to reach Vagamon. The initial plan was to ride till Vagamon and return.

                Climbing up..

Once I reached top I decided to ride a bit further on the route towards Elappara, and that was the best decision. Because the climb till Vagamon was not very interesting on a landscape perspective. But from Vagamon towards Elappara it was a surreal change of surroundings. The climate became cool, I was riding among green hills with beautiful views. See the video of this part of the ride and you will get to know this.

When I stopped on this route I met a local with whom I confirmed that I can go forward on this route and get back home via Kuttikkanam. That was great since I did not want to go back the route which I climbed up.

The road from Kuttikkanam towards Kanjirappalli is very good with twisties. Here is the video for this part of the ride.

I'm planning a ride from Pune to Kochi in mid January 2016 and wish to know if you can give me an idea of the road conditions from 1) Bangalore to Valparai and 2) Valparai to Kochi.

There is all chances that I will be riding to kerala from Pune in Jan or Feb as well. Valparai - cochin is fine Road with a small bad patch in between. But not sure about current situation.
