    Prologue

Since the last two years I had been wanting to do a ride down South, but my efforts did not fructify and so life went on, until Gurpratap who is my riding buddy resurrected this lost dream of mine. Initially we planned the ride for the Diwali week which was full of holidays, hotel bookings were made, much planning was discussed and our tails were high in the air and then due to some work commitments Gurpratap informs me that Diwali week wasn't possible, Argh, Deja Vu all over again. Anyway, after a few days passed he informed me that we can make the trip Nov 5 to Nov 12 (Nov 13 Sunday rest day). Game on, ride on! As our initial ride plans were for Kodaikanal and then Valparai for which hotel bookings were available only Nov 8 - 11 we decided to include the southern most tip of India, Kanyakumari. So once again the world was bright and hotel bookings, planning was discussed, bike suspensions softened (Thruxton front and Ninja Rear) for the long haul, chain lubed, oil & coolant levels checked, luggage kept ready etc and we were set to Go --->

    Day 1 and 2 : Pune - Tumkur - Kanyakumari

Day 1 - We had decided to meet up at 5 am Saturday Nov 5th but were there ten minutes earlier all bright eyed and bushy tailed. Our first stop was at the vada pao stall just before Khambatki ghat where we stopped for a cup of tea amidst a very cold morning ride thus far. There are many diversions on account of the numerous flyovers that are still being built whilst the authorities dream up of even more to add on this chaotic stretch of highway. We pushed on with the sun beginning to rise and the weather getting now freezing cold. It was so cold that my eyes began watering but we soldiered on, pushing the pace, keeping in mind we had to make Tumkur before dark. Another quick and welcome tea break after the Satara toll I rode like a frozen statue to Sai Inn Kolhapur which we reached at 8 am. My hands were shivering as we tucked into a idli and medu vada breakfast washed down by some hot tea. We decided not to take our jacket liners off as it was still quite cold.

Past Kolhapur we were able to open up the throttle and before we knew it were past Nipani and heading for Hubli. Somewhere along that lovely piece of road my tail bag went flying off and hit the road. Fortunately it rolled to the side away from traffic and was relatively unscathed. It was here that we came across a long procession of goats being herded in a most orderly fashion. We soon hit the single lane 30 km stretch before Hubli town which slowed us down as it was difficult to overtake safely but overall it wasn't too bad as the road is smooth. Past Hubli, we were back on the four-lane highway heading to Chitradurga. Amidst fuel breaks and short refreshment stops along the way we pulled into Tumkur at 5 pm and dived into the first decent looking hotel we saw called Citria Three Star Hotel which charged us Rs. 1500/- for an AC double room off which we took one each. We proceeded to unload our bags and then wiped our bikes down which became a routine at the end of each day's ride. After a refreshing shower and a massage by those shower jets in the panel (see video) we settled down for some mild beer and dinner. Dinner consisted of the most amazing prawn chilly and chicken pepper fry. We had completed a distance of 798 km.

Day 2 - We began our ride from Tumkur at 6 am and we were heading to Hosur via NICE ring-road to meet friends Kurush and Zahara who got up early in the morning and braved the drive to meet with us for breakfast along-with their pooch Buddy. After paying a toll of Rs. 60/- which was well worth it given we bypass all that horrendous Bangalore traffic one keeps hearing about. The NICE road is well really nice and for some part of the distance we did a high speed run against a Verna going pedal to the metal. We caught up with Kurush's Mahindra Thar jeep somewhere a little before A2B Hosur which was our designated breakfast stop. We spent close to two hours chatting and digging into some scrumptious south Indian food. Kurush whispered he had a surprise for us that was waiting in the car (I love surprises). The surprise turned out to be the most relaxing massage which was from neck to lower back by this massage chair he had bought recently and had fitted in his jeep.

Fresh from the TLC, we were gung-ho and ready to ride on by around 10.45 am. Our destination as per the plan was for Dindigul where we were to stop for the night. We soon entered Tamil Nadu and the roads were just awesome, the best that I have ridden on. Along the way and I think a little before Krishnagiri we stopped at a KDFC outlet where some other bikers were chilling out for a our first cup of filter coffee. I was hooked! The coffee was like no other and which we relished the entire time we spent in TN. After introducing ourselves and engaging in a vibrant chat the group dispersed and we continued our ride to Dindigul.

We reached Dindigul at 1 pm and proceeded to ride into the town in search of a hotel. After a local gave us directions we had to backtrack some distance and had to off-road a couple of kilometers under an upcoming flyover to reach the only two hotels in Dindigul. Both were full! Some marriage party had descended into town and had booked all rooms. So we then decided to have the famous Dindigul biryani for lunch at Thalappakatti. This eatery was established in 1957 and has branches in Kuala Lumpur, US, Dubai and a host of places in the South. Sadly the mutton biryani didn't live up to our expectations but the mutton roast which was delicately spiced was good but the service was terrible and indifferent. I could hear the cook bellowing in the kitchen for crying out loud. After lunch, we left Dindigul at 3.30 pm and decided we try our luck for accommodation further on near Madurai. We pulled up on the highway at Madurai at 4.30 pm and were undecided as to whether we should bother entering the city to look for accommodation or should we continue riding. We continued riding, also because the hotel sign boards before had ominous advertisements like Veg, High Class Veg, Even Higher Class Veg.

In a short while the sun began to set and soon became dark. This is where the road becomes barren for things like hotels, though in the dark we could see large neon lit boards displaying hotel, we discovered that these were just eating joints and not places to stay. After pulling over a few times and found this hotel stuff repeating itself we reached Tirunelveli which was just 85 km from Kanyakumari. We decided to push on and finish our ride the same day. We reached our hotel Tamil Nadu Hotel (TTDC) at 9 pm and checked into a Twin Cottage AC off which we had one each. After unloading our bags we went to look for mild beer as the hotel only served strong ones which we dont have. TN is the most miserable place to get liqueur as it is sold by the Government Licensed shops, all of which are dark dingy seedy looking places with rot gut to pass off as booze. No mild beer available! After picking my feet up over some sprawled drunks outside the shop and passing through the alley stinking of urine we decided to skip the beer for the night and head to the hotel for some R&R. My odometer read 1575 km and we had covered 777 km for the day.

              Day 3 & 4 : Kanyakumari - Kodaikanal

Day 3 - We woke up fresh in the morning after a good eight hour sleep and on reflection glad we finished the stretch to Kanyakumari the evening before. After a leisurely south Indian complementary breakfast in the hotel restaurant we rode two-up on my bike to fill up fuel and check out the place. Upon asking for directions we were told, "go straightaah, then rightaah, then come to roundanna and then leftaah". Our intention was to also score some mild beer for the evening and we finally found a TASMAC (TamilNadu State Marketing Corporation) which had some at Rs.160/- a bottle, Jeez. After wiping our bikes down in readiness for the next day's ride we tucked into a delicious chicken curry and rice which we ordered room service. Tamil Nadu Hotel is a beautiful sprawling property and is located on Lighthouse Road facing the sea. The property is full of peacocks and other species of birds. After some afternoon siesta and tea, we went for a short walk to the View Tower to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast, so the sun wasn't visible in all its glory. We then had a tasty seafood dinner ordered room service and washed down by that terrible beer Sterren (6% v.v) which wasn't mild by any standard. We crashed early in anticipation of the next day's ride.

Day 4 - We were up and ready to leave at 6 am but left around 20 minutes later as one of the hotel guests wanted to chat with us about our trip, bikes etc. We wound our way through the roads of Kanyakumari and shortly connected to the highway after which we rode amongst this beautiful stretch of road with windmills on either side and a heavy headwind. We encountered a heavy headwind all the way from this point till all the way back home to Pune. As this was a shortish ride of around 350 km we decided to take it easy and stopped for Tea and snacks along the way. We fortunately crossed the town of Salem fairly quickly and without too much of a hitch and then made tracks towards Dindigul. About 50 km before Dindigul we turned off from NH 44 at a place called Vadipatti and made for the remaining 90 km to Kodaikanal. We were stopped at a police check-post by two Rajnikant type cops lounging on chairs outside their kiosk just as the climb up begins to Kodaikanal. After asking us some useless questions and asking to see our bike papers which I don't think they even understood, they suddenly went back to their chilled out existence. The climb up as expected was super with beautiful scenery and good roads. We took a few quick stops to take photographs and soak in the beauty. As we climbed, the temperature began to dip and shortly into the ride we fished out our liners and felt better. We reached our hotel Le Poshe by Sparsa at 1 pm after a lovely morning ride covering different types of terrain. After getting our rooms and having a sandwich lunch we headed for our rooms to have a nap. Later that afternoon, Gurpratap rode off on his own to see the Kodaikanal lake from where he quickly returned in half-an-hour to say it was nothing great as it was too commercialized. After wiping our bikes down in anticipation of the ride to Valparai the followng day and having a steaming hot bath we headed for dinner to the hotel restaurant. At about 9 pm we suddenly noticed that the other hotel guests were all huddled at their tables and looking grumpy. I generally happened to check out the news on my phone when I came across the demonetization diktat passed by the Government. Ah shucks, this immediately put a spoke in the wheel for our Valparai plan the next day. As there was confusion all around at the time, we decided to have a good night's sleep and wake up a little late the next day to decide the course of action for this epic ride of ours.

This video is from Day 3 our rest day in Kanyakumari as we had completed the ride the previous evening. So we took in the sights, lazed around, slept and ate...

Day 5 : The Ride to Palani

We woke up in the morning after a restful night and ready to take on the demonetized world. After some frantic calls to and fro we were able to make arrangements for the next day to exchange our old currency notes for hundreds without standing in the serpentine queues that were lined up at banks. Much relieved, though with only Rs.900/- between the two of us for the day, we decided make a day ride for Palani which is 65 km from Kodaikanal. We rolled out of Kodai at around 11 am and were soon in the well paved twisties. We decided to stop for a cup of tea and take in the local flavor before pushing on. The tea stall had a pipe next to it from which fresh spring water flowed, heavenly stuff to us city folk. We also spotted a grizzled giant squirrel close-up, hopping from one tree to the next, which according to the locals at the tea stall, was not something common to see. We also rode amongst gigantic eucalyptus trees (during that stretch imagine Vicks Vaporub stuffed up your nose)and shola forests which was a real treat. Closer towards Palani we came across this view tower on a hairpin bend where we stopped and could witness a panoramic view of the valley below. This ride was all about just being one with the bike, oneself and enjoying the bounties of nature in all its splendid glory.

The manager of the restaurant where we had stopped for lunch offered to exchange Rs.500/- old currency note for hundreds which affirmed our belief in the kindness of strangers. Thank you Anna.

As we were about twenty minutes from our hotel on the return leg it began to rain lightly and we made quick tracks to reach our warm rooms by 5 pm. A ride like this will be firmly etched in my memory for a long time to come.

P.S. Gurpratap being the resourceful chap that he usually is, scored some rum from a TASMAC in Kodaikanal to keep our spirits strong and evenings warm. Cheers buddy!

Day 6 : The Ride to Mannavanur

The first half of the day was spent exchanging our old currency notes for smaller denominations and involved going to two banks which were thankfully opposite each other. Having put aside our monetary difficulties, we headed out for a ride at 12 pm to Mannavanur which was recommended to us by the hotel Chef. The Chef had packed a picnic lunch of aloo paratha which was safely snuggled in my tank bag. The roads were awesome with some well laid tarmac off which large portions of the ride were covered in fog and mist where the temperature would be even lower than Kodaikanal. We reached the entrance gate of Mannavanur Lake and decided to turn back as we wanted to spend more time in the hills and also return back to the hotel for some R&R which was required before the long haul home.

On the return leg, we stopped at a beautiful location with a small roadside eatery called Relax Corner which served us some tasty & piping hot wild mushroom clear soup, what a treat this was. We also tucked into an omelet sandwich and had some tea. The two young entrepreneurial brothers who ran the eatery were hospitable and took genuine interest in what they were serving. A little later we stopped at a beautiful spot by a bridge and laid out our picnic boxes of aloo paratha which was surprisingly still warm. We were joined by two dogs from the forest and we shared our food with them. Having had our fill we repacked the boxes into the tank bag for proper disposal in the city.

A little short of Kodaikanal it began to rain again. This seemed to be becoming a pattern in Kodaikanal where it would rain for a short while around 3 pm each day. I made a stop to buy homemade chocolates, eucalyptus oil, coffee, tea and diabetes powder for my mom.

In the evening the hotel had arranged a bonfire which was a blessing as the weather turns chilly after a shower of rain. We caught up with our new friends the Athre's from Pune, who on spotting our bike number plates the day before, had befriended us. We spent a chilled out evening chatting, relaxing and having an early dinner before we hit the sack.

This was an incredibly scenic ride albeit short as we spent the morning at the banks exchanging our currency for smaller denominations. We set out for Mannav...

That was one awesome ride. And that triumph looks gorgeous. The RE Con GT must have inspired by the Thruxton. Didn't know the 'daru' scene in TN is so bad. I know Kerala has gone to the dogs now but even TN?

Yes, the Thruxton is a gorgeous bike in not only the looks department but also a superb performer as well. The governments of TN and Kerala should drop these archaic thoughts of liquor and beer, which in my opinion is more harmful given the overpriced rot gut that is dished out. I cant understand why people out here can't drink to responsibly enjoy it, rather than getting drunk each time.

                        Day 7 & 8 : Kodaikanal - Chitrdurga - Pune

Day 7 - With heavy hearts we loaded our bikes amidst a chilly morning and left the hotel from Kodaikanal at 5.45 am. We had to ride slowly due to low visibility, cold weather and wishing for someone to say 'dont leave'. The ride down was really nice especially with the sun coming up and which we also got to experience. We stopped at the first roadside tea-stall coming down the hill for a much needed hot cup of tea where we spotted a cat curled up on a bike relaxing in the morning sun, ah what bliss! We had decided to aim for Chitradurga in Karnataka for a night halt but were open to halting at Tumkur should we get stuck in Salem and/or Bangalore. We fortunately passed Salem which wasn't too much of a bother and somewhere along the way we had our last KDFC coffee, something that I miss even to the day. The road for about 50 km before Dharmapuri was strange because on the surface it looked smooth but was undulating across it, leading the rider to go faster than necessary but having to endure a bumpy ride. This was perhaps the only stretch of road in TN which I didn't like. We reached Bangalore around 1 pm and took the NICE Ring Road which for the first 20 km isn't as well paved as compared to coming from the other side. We crossed Tumkur a little later which was busy with traffic and slowed us down but it was too early in the afternoon to call it a day so we pushed on for Chitradurga which we reached at 5.30 pm having clocked 692 km for the day. We checked into Hotel Naveen Regency (Rs.2100/- Double Room AC, safe parking, good food) which is located just under a flyover and an easy pull out to the highway. Having settled our bags into our rooms we met up downstairs for our customary bike wipe down, the last one for this trip. We had a tasty dinner along-with some lager at the restaurant located in the hotel lawns and called it an early night.

Day 8 - We left the hotel at 5.45 am and were immediately on the highway heading towards Hubli. The morning air was nippy but nothing close to what we had experienced in Kodaikanal over the last few days. We reached Nipani at around 11.30 am and tucked into some delicious Omelet Bread, tea and sweet lime soda. Having refreshed ourselves we began the last stretch, something which Gurpratap and I are so familiar with, back home passing through Kolhapur and Satara. We bid farewell at our customary stop which is just after Katraj Tunnel and headed for each other's homes. I reached home at 5.00 pm having clocked 660 km for the day and almost 3500 km for the week on this fantastic ride.

This video is from the return leg of our South India tour. We left Kodaikanal feeling low as this incredible ride was coming to a close. Our target for Day 7...
