  • The Berozgari Ride

Quitting your job is not always a good feeling. But for the motorheads like us, quitting the job and going on a long ride is an opportunity we all crave for....

    Prologue:

As the last day of work was approaching, my mind and hands were more concentrated on finding best routes to ride through rather than best ways to do a knowledge transfer. After a prolonged decision process decided to ride towards Goa and Maharashtra. But again out of the blue my brother also decides to tag along for the ride as a pillion so had to limit my plans till Goa so avoid sore bum complaints from him It was not what I would have done but again its the road that matters not the distance.

    Day 1:

    Route: BLR-Hassan-Belur-Kudremukh-Kundapura
    Stay:
    Hotel Shivaprasad Grand, Kundapura
1000 Rs for a double room/night. Great hotel in given budget, provides breakfast coupons of 100Rs per head which are to be redeemed in restaurant beside the hotel.
Clean rooms, Good bed, good amenities.

Alarms were up before me as usual, after few snoozes got my lazy bum and dragged it up to wake up my brother too. After all morning rituals, blessing from my mother and a stern lecture about extra responsibility of my brother and a don't go look from my wife, we hit the road at around 5:30AM. Objective was to cover as much distance as possible safely. First pit stop came near Yadiyur, we stopped for breakfast at Hotel Dhruvathare, Its few kilometers from Swathi Delicacy on the correct side of the road. Breakfast was great and light on pocket compared to other highway hotels. Has a good seating area if anyone plans for a breakfast ride. After a sumptuous breakfast hit the road again towards Hassan. The rains started as soon as we hit Hassan outskirts and had to change in our rain gear which we were not going to get rid off till end of the day.
As we crossed Hassan and towards Belur the entire landscape and roads changed. I was feeling an extra surge of energy after a boring haul of highway. Roads started to curve more often, bike started to lean on either sides, The drops of rain on the visor, everything felt enchanting. Ignored few requests to stop from the pillion as was enjoying the road. After multiple stops and winding roads finally reached Kudremukh. The whole road passing through Kudremukh is just unbelievable in monsoons. One time you will be climbing the mountains, other you would be in plains and then some dense forest. Tried to visit Lakkavali Dam but was closed for visitors. After a rain drenched ride we finally arrived at our destination Kundapura, found our hotel and dumped ourselves in the room. After a short nap got ready to visit beach in Kundapura and also visited the Light house which allows you to climb till top and enjoy the view. After visiting light house and having dinner, retired back to hotel.

        Day 2:

        Route: Kundapura-Murudeshwar-Karwar-Gokarna

Got up lazily the next day as was in no hurry to reach anywhere, Destination planned was Gokarna which was mere 150kms. On the way planned to visit Murudeshwar temple. Riding lazily through the coastal roads which consisted of good tarmac as well as miserable pot holes. Entire stretch from Kundapura to Goa is under construction and a real pain to ride. We stopped for a while near maravanthe beach stretch and then continued for Murudeshwar. Reached murudeshwar after 2.5 hrs of bumpy rides taking all sorts of mud and gravel splashes by truckers. The rain was just modulating between intensity of heavy and light. The first dilemma came after we reachedMurudeshwar was about our luggage, helmets and gear, As it was a weekday the crowd was sparse and so i decided to keep luggage tied to bike and take along helmets to the temple. Luckily there is a cloak room to deposit tourist luggage for a mere fee of 5rs per bag, the guy over the counter issued 3 tickets 2 for helmets and one for backpack and we were sorted to roam around in our riding gear in the temple premises. You cannot avoid stares and questions you get while posing in your seemingly oversized attire. We visited the temple and took the elevator ride up to the Gopuram at 18th floor. The view was just fantastic, luckily the rains stopped and were able to capture good photos from the top which was still crowded. After spending a decent time and fulfilling my urge to get an ice-cream we moved on to our destination for the day.

We reached Karwar after an hour or so and on the way found an Indian Navy Base which also had a small warship converted to a museum. My brother asked me to stop there so we did. INS Chapal, the warship museum. After a brief documentry of our naval strength we were allowed to view the warship, it was a different experience entirely. We continued on to our destination Gokarna after 20mins and we reached Zostel Gokarna. The location of this zostel is fantastic, it instantly reminded me of Varkala which i visited last year on my kanyakumari ride.
After some rest went out to seek the beaches on my bike which i havent been to on my previous 2 visits to Gokarna. We roamed around and finally settled to a shack at the nearest Kudle beach which was accessible by walk from zostel. Apparently the rain had stopped and sun was shining amidts the clouds. Took this oppertunity to gulp down cold beer along with the salty breeze of the beach. This was my current defination of chilling-out and was going to stay the same for many days

              Re: The Berozgari Ride

              Day 3 and 4:

              Route planned: Gokarna-Devkar Falls-Idgundi/Yellapur
              Route taken: Gokarna-Colva(Goa)

              Stay: Hotel Amigo Plaza, Colva
Decent hotel with a swimming pool, Smiling staff, good clean rooms with balcony opening up on main road. Beach is walkable distance.
              1000Rs for double room/night

It was 7:00 in the morning and i woke up to the sound of rain splashing on to the window beside my bed. It was raining cats and dogs! the beach down the cliff was not visible it was that bad. Dissapointed with the start of day i walked back up to my bed and dissapeared beneath my blanket. It was supposed to be a short nap but when my eyes opened my watch was pointing past 11, It was still drizzling outside. After a nice hot cup of coffee watching over the cliff and multiple deep thoughts decided to start packing up and leave for Goa. I had planned to visit Devkar Falls and then take a route from Idgundi towards Yellapur but that plan went kaput due to rains. We started off in afternoon at about 12:30 after having a decent brunch. After an uneventfull ride of about 3 hrs we reached Colva. The memorable thing here was crossing of KA border into GA. The roads became butter smooth and a real fun to ride on. This was first time for me into Goa on my bike. Was really pleased with the roads Goa had to offer till now. Arrived at Colva at about 4pm and got our hotel sorted. It was off-season and rooms were offered at very discounted rates. Decided to visit the beach and chill-out. As the FIFA world cup was going on it was pretty good match available for the evening. After hopping multiple bar's and having a pint at each we settled for one restaurant named Rooftop Lounge, It had great food at a decent price had the best cheese garlic bread and few pints of beer along with the football match. Enjoyed the night throughly and retired for the day.

Next day we decided to take a trip for Dudhsagar Falls, But unfortunately when we reached we came to know that the jeep ride till the falls is closed. We came across multiple "agents" claiming they can take us to falls via train. The timings of the train were 8:30 in the morning and 4:30 in evening to depart from nearest station. It was 9:30 in the watch and we cant just wait till 4:30 and going on foot was a big NO. So chucked the plan for Dudhsagar falls and headed towards Panaji to visit Old Goa and then went towards Miramar and Dona Paula. We returned back to colva in the evening with some Kaju shopping at mom's request.

              Day 4 and 5

We stayed in zostel near calangute for the next two days and explored goa. I would let the pictures do the talking.

We stayed in goa for 4 nights, every day we roamed in morning and came back to shacks for football matches. It was freedom like no other....

              Day 6 and 7
Route: Calangute - Amboli Ghat - Gokak Falls - Hubli

After fun filled 4 days we were ready to depart from Goa and head back home. The feeling of homesickness was nowhere to be found inside us, we were craving for more roads and more destinations but as some wise man told "As one journey ends, Another begins" Every end is a start of a new beginning, remembering those words we finally set off on a long road back home.

We decided to visit Gokak falls on the way back so took the Amboli Ghat route, I have been to most of the ghat roads in southern India but this stretch of journey was entirely different. Its similar but still so different that you can come back over and over again on these roads. The view of the valley from Amboli is magnificent and the jets of water flowing from the mountains makes it so serene to view. As you switch on to the other side of ghats you are greeted by a squadron of dense clouds making the road disappear. It was dense enough that my poor phone couldn't capture anything other than a streak of light dispersed in the fog. After riding for a while we meet on to the Pune-Blr highway and a left turn shortly took us through laid back country roads towards Gokak. We felt temperature rising and sun was shining with all its might on us after a week.

After a journey of almost 3 hours we finally arrived to Gokak, Parked our bike and moved on to the falls view point. This visit was an utter disappointment, not much water in the falls and so we quickly returned back to our bike, had snacks and started towards Hubli. I decided to stay at Hubli as I didn't want to risk riding at night to reach Bangalore. The crosswinds were major concern, bike was changing lanes on its own even though it was loaded, few gusts of wind were powerful enough for me to slow down the bike. After a ride of another 3 hours we reached Hubli and found a hotel to stay for the night in city. As the dinner time was approaching found a good North Karnataka restaurant which serves traditional oota, The vegetarian food was really tasty and left our tummies delighted. After roaming around and filling up the tank we returned back to hotel to call it a day.

Next day was a long boring ride till Bangalore on the highway. Though highway is scenic it still cant make up for what we had experienced in past few days. After 8hrs of riding we finally reached back home safe and sound.

At last, Thanks all for reading and appreciating, Hope to take more of these journeys and keep writing.
              Cheerz!!
