  • The "Weekend" had come - after a long long time!

    Prologue:
It had been over 3 months since my last ride. The monotonous routine had got me by the neck and the urge to get a break had built up for quite some time now.
Wifey had been reminding me, time and again to get back to rides but the routine had got me!

    Come today:
She started asking me the same question. Where are we heading next? and the biggest question "WHEN"?
Hence decided to give in, and we were ready to ride to the next available weekend.
Zeroed down to 2nd weekend (sat-sun) of March, and we were ready to roll.

    The issues:
    Bike:-Usual maintenance:
Got that sorted just 2 days before the ride. Chain sprocket, Cables and oil change was due.

    Weather:
    - In Namma Benglauru it was 32-35°C in the day!
-Thus, sea shore was off the consideration list and hills was the option left.

    Stay:
    - With very less days left to travel and stay was yet to be figured out. Well I have the basic requirement: clean washroom, comfortable room for stay, and a proper secure parking. But since wife was the pillion, have to always think of a good place.
All good options i could think of were either sold out or too expensive for 1 day stay. Turns out, Zostel Coorg was available with a private room. And thus we decided to give it a try - will share a quick review of it towards the end!

    So now comes Friday evening.
    Bike and stay is sorted.
Weather - well, hoping for mercy!

We decided to take the below route: Day1: Home - Mysore Road - Mandya - Hunsur - Periyapatna - Siddapura - Zostel (293KM)
and took other route during return leg: Zostel - Kushal Nagar (Namdroling Monastery) - Periyapatna - Hunsur - Mysore Road - Home (263KM)

Started from home at around 5:30AM. The weather was pleasant.

Sailed through the city pretty quickly and hit the highway!

Happiness that riding brings to us!

    Kaapi is life!

The cafe is a pocket friendly and a well located one..with ample parking.

Soon we entred the forest area after crossing Periyapatna. The road between Periyapatna and Siddapura passes through Dense forest, having autumn just left us, the jungle looked sore. But the thought of coming at the same spot in monsoon to enjoy the lush greenery bought a smile, and a tensed moment for the wildlife being around.

Around 11:30am, we checked-in to Zostel, Coorg.

Completed formalitites and came to know that their cook is not available thus need to order food from outside. Room was OK.
    Zostel Coorg welcomes you:

Got acquitanted with Mr. Aniket, the property incharge at Zostel. Got some good insight and things to do in and around Zostel for a leisurely ride.
Got freshen up and ordered some lunch. Since it was depressingly hot outside, post lunch, we decided to recharge our batteries.

    Voila!! Woke up at 4:30PM.
The plan was to leave by 4, go to Dubare Elephant camp, and then head to Chikklihole Reservior to see the sunset.

Managed to ride up to Dubare, although did not venture towards the camp side. Instead, did some spices and chocolate shopping and also tasted some home made wines.

Then we rode to the reservoir! Trust me the spot is bang on! Amidst the nature, a beautiful structure of dam with backdrop of hills - makes up a perfect view for the sunset.

Sorry a few photos have got rotated…please can somebody guide me in fixing them??

Immediately after the sunset, rode back to Zostel. And enroute, picked up some chips and biscuits.

      What we loved about zostel?
      - The clear sky - perfect for time lapse and shots but sadly did not carry the tripods, so no photos.
      - On the highway (200mor so, off and inside) yet wonderful and calm.

Asked them to give us some maggi and coffee. Trust me, the right company, the perfect surrounding makes up for perfect time off. And that is exactly what i wanted!
After having maggi and coffee, just had leisurely walk around zostel to soak in the beauty of nature and darkness.

Ordered dinner from the same place (earlier in the day, ordered lunch from the same place).

After a leisurely dinner and roaming around, Zostel had arranged for camp fire. Apparently, they do it every weekend!

As we were about to windup, the group that had been staying there asked us if we would like to join them for a walk to the lake. And we humbly obliged! Meeting travellers and like-minded people is always fun.

Walking in the dark, with just mobile phone torch light guiding us, we reached the pond! (and not a Lake)
We were instructed to switch off the lights and enjoy the constellation. Trust me, i have no clue and much knowledge of this. But i did enjoy the walk and then just looking at the sky sitting on the ground.

After a while, we left and off for the day!

This was shot, when the power went off and the group was busy enjoying the camp fire:

      Day2:
      Woke up at 8.30AM:
The plan was to visit the nearby Vintage Cars Museum, head to Namdroling and then head back home with enroute food stop.
We were guided by Google that Namdroling opens at 9:00AM (However it opens at 7AM and closes at 6PM). And thus, decided to skip the Museum and head directly to Namdroling.

The delicious meal after riding in sun for a long time

      Our First experience with Zostel:
      Pros:
      - 15% booking token, refundable if cancelled - Wow!
      - Staff - superb! The staff, we interacted with, had knowledge of whereabouts, things to do, etc.
      - Check-in was smooth as cards were working.
      - Wifi was pretty much available.
      - Overall rating: 6/10.

      Cons:
Room: Bedding, in room options - could be better (paid amenities)
Food: In such locations, you have to have your own cook
Power: Frequent (every 5min) power off and on was a turn down, even though they had DG, but yes it does spoil the mood.

Overall, a great experience. It was our first time staying at such places. However, if you are couple or family - we recommend to have a proper family.
Whereas, for bag-packers and people who would use it only for Sleeping and getting freshen-up, this works perfect.
The place from where we ordered food at Zostel: Cofiya in Siddapura. They offer free home delivery.

PS: If you are going to Chikklihole, please carry your own water and snacks. Also, please do not litter and ensure you don't spoil the beauty of the place by throwing garbage here and there.
