  • Mumbai to Calcutta

    Hey Guys!!!

Me and my group of friends have decided to have an adventure trip to Calcutta from Mumbai on our bikes. We have decided to go this December if all goes well or in the December of 2004. We have also planned a trip to Darjeeling from Calcutta and probably Nepal throught the border.

According to our initial plan we will be taking 4 days to reach Calcutta and will start the darjeeling trip after a suitable rest at Calcutta.

Regarding this trip I wanted valuable info from u guys on the following:
1)I am probably buying a brand new high end bike like the Thunderbird 350/500(launch in Aug) or an Aquila this September or October. My question is...WHICH ONE SHOULD I BUY, specially in respect to this trip. Which will be more reliable, efficient and effective in place like darjeeling where temperatures drop to 1degrees cel in Decmeber.

2)What should be my frequency of oil change during this journey, as the engine will be used to cover almost 500kms a dayi.e. 11 to 12 hrs a day.

3)I've heard that petrol freezes at low temperatures, and also that special antifreez petrol is sold in hill stations where the temperature is very low. IS THIS TRUE?? OR THE NORMAL PETROL IS JUST RIGHT FOR ANY TYPE OF CLIMATE?? What precautins should be taken to take care of this problem?

4)Will the bike give starting problems in low temperatures?

The trip spans for 39 days as per calc and roughly 6500-7500kms. Please help me out with this. Any extra suggestions from u guys will be most welcome.

    HI Darius,
This is a venture of different kind in a way that I have heard people going K to K (Vertically) but very few like you go across the width of the nation. I have been to long trips and from the experience I have some opinions for you.
    1. You should go in for Bullet and should buy it before atleast 2 months (cover at least 1k km), so that you have a hang of the bike. Among various reasons to goin for Bullet is , Tremmendous load carrying capacity (you can add extra attachments to hold more load), availability of spares and service, Effortless driving on highways.
    2. Should go as per the instruction manual.
    3. I had been in the temp. at -10 degrees. Nothing happened. Still if somethings like that is there, locals will always tell you even if you do not ask.
    4. Present bullet come with battery aided starter, so apart from usual, there should not be any starting problem, in cold temp.
    Cheers..and Good Luck.
NB: 500 kms per day is very ambitious (Keep some margin for fatigue and butt blisters)

Should the oil change be in lesser intervals as the use of the bike is a lot and continuous as well

i say t'bird for many reasons,5 gears, cdi, lesser fuel and oil consumption, more comfortable on a cruise.if u have a good oil put in interval can be kept std.actually 6k too is on safer side as given in manual.

not as far as i know.at high altitude u may want to turn the mixture richer though.

yeah...as you go higher ur mixture by default gets leaner....but that is in places such as Leh etc. Darjeeling wont be much of a problem to conquer.

As per ur advice guys....I guess the Aquiala is out. Now the question is go for a Thunderbird 350/500cc or an Electra, whom do u guys choose between the two?

Just out of curiousity, I wanted to know the chances of a Pulsar or CBZ going through such a journey

Will the Pulsar be equally responsive in low temperatures as the the Bullet?

OFCOURSE YAAR PULSAR AND CBZ CAN DO IT. THERE IS NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. RECENTLY A GROUP OF AROUND 40 GUYS FROM AMBALA (HARYANA) LEFT FOR LEH THEY WERE ALL ON PULSARS, CBZs & KARIZMA. I READ THIS IN NEWSPAPER. ON THE FRONT ROW OF THE PIC WHICH GOT PRINTED THERE WERE CBZ, KARIZMA & PULSAR.

personally i would never go for a cruiser no matter how long the journey is - i really would want the karizma both for its responsiveness, speed and photogeniality...
