  • Back Ache on long rides

    Cheerio folks,
Rode about 6 hrs though western ghats on my dhanno, and both me and my friend on the backseat ended up with a massive ache in the lower back . cant tell how, if a 6hr ride can do this , will i do the tour-de-ladakh ?
What tools have the tourists been using for doing long distance?
I have a bullet350, planning to get the seat replaced by a electra seat and get a modified handlebar. But don't know how far will that help.
    any tricks of trade?

Pain is temporary, Glory is forever!

I've ridden an electra, it's got a sweet seat.

Try that, or else start doing lower back exercises like, straight leg dead lifts, good mornings etc.

            1. Take a break on long drives every hour or so and stretch your back muscles

            2. Do hot fomentation with a hot water bag / electric pad / warm cloth etc. to soothe the muscles that go into a spasm.

            3. Do not use an Indan comode to $hit !! Use the WC.

            4. Avoid sitting on the ground for anything.

            5. Do not bend down to pick up stuff from the ground. Bend your knees, squat and use your stronger thigh muscles for getting up. Keep your spine straight all the while.

            6. Sleep on a hard surface (not the cold ground or else it will get worse) like a carpet / mat / thin mattress. Sleep on any side with your legs bent and a pillow between your legs (foetus position). Use a medium density narrow pillow.

            7. NEVER get up straight from the bed. Always turn to one side and take the support of one of your hands to push yourself up.

            8. Do back & abdominal exercises to strengthen your muscles. These muscles support your spine and need to be strong.

            9. When you do get a backache, lie on the ground and keep your legs on a chair / sofa / bed with the thigh perpendicular pointing towards the celing. This is called as the position of rest.

Thanks a ton for the good help,
one of my friends suggested that if I am riding alone i can tie the sack-roll up close and tight on the back seat so that it can act like a back rest while driving.
Has anyone tried this? Does it work? I have always preffered putting my stuff into a side case and not in a roll.

Can a modified LML Vespa rider's back rest (which I think was a splendid invention!) be modified to use on a bullt which has a contoured seat?

@kafka : on my trips, wen i tie the luggage with bungee cords , sometimes i tie it in such a way that d lower half of my back easily tks the support of the luggage.. it does help

                          @nik : well said buddy

does ne one know of this exercise : u lie on ur stomach. den lift ur upper body n legs , while keepin d waist area flat on the bed/ground. this way u sort of bend ur body up-wards.
i hv heard , doin dis every mornin for a week or so eliminates back aches..
